I'm just curious as to where and when hippies started growing dreads. I don't think that the hippies in the 60's had them, so why do so many have them these days?

Sorry I can't help you. But you are right back in the 60s I saw no one with them. Maybe a couple but it was not the norm. We favored long straight hair. Or fros.

    Peace

its probably because the world hadn't been introduced to Rastafarianism on a widespread scale back in the 60s......see the 70s

Hippies started to grow dreads when Bob Marley and reggae came in the picture. Jamaicans and Etiopians have had dreads since erhm well ever :D

Eh true, but so many people assume that dreads are really hippie things, when in fact the real hippies didn't really ever have them :S

Everything evolves and changes with time, including generalizations. Lots of today's hippies have them and it doesn't matter what the 'real hippies' did. It's all about the now.

and yeah, my guess would be that when hippie culture met rasta culture, the hair began to cross over.

Gah, by "real" hippies I meant the original 60's type. I guess the fact that dreads have become mainstream among hippies does make them a hippie thing, irrespective of the fact that they weren't worn by the original ones ;)

"real "hippies were not introduced to Rasta culture until the 70s....its that simple

(I should say the WORLD hadn't been introduced to Rasta)
