My brother, sister, and I would be gone morning till dark and Mom always knew where we had been and what we had done. The Mom grape vine would let her know if there was a problem. Add to the list of things we survived, tire swings, and rope swings over the water. Going fishing at the lake without adult supervision. My GrandMa cured my ADD with a swat to my behind, not hard enough to leave a mark just enough to get my attention. I thought you had to be 40 or older to post here.

A great post - my how things have changed since the days when, as a child, you could find things out by exploring the real world. Here in the UK parents are so scared of "what might happen" that children don't have adventures any more, they don't even leave the house, and some parents are getting their kids microchipped so they know where they are all the time. How sad is that? Leads to frustrated, violent and frightened young adults methinks. Life should be an adventure - I think I'll go and have one now! Love and peace

I'm 53 years old. I lived out in the country when I was a kid, down in the Santa Clara Valley. I was out all day on weekends and during the summer and never had any problems. I feel sorry that my 4-year-old daughter will never know that kind of freedom.

Too much fear. I'm willing to give my kid a pretty long leash, but my wife is fearful.

Come on, give whiskers a break, he has a point.
It's to easy to spin earlier times into the good 'ol days, even though I tend to agree with most of the stuff in the o.p. Not everyone had cool environs to grow up in. Throwing dirt clods in an abandon lot gets old pretty quick.
I can remember a lot of really boring times when I was a kid in the '60s. We would have killed just to have a decent cartoon(Hanna- Barbera cartoons dominated then), let alone the stuff kids have nowdays like X-box...
I tell ya, If I had X-box when I was a kid,I probably wouldn't have wanted to go outside either!

I never get tired of those type of analogies- I still cant get it thru to my 22 year old son he can drink from the same straw as I just did, without any terrible consequences

At least when he watches those Hollywood Vietnam movies ,he
knows better than to say"That musta been kool"
