Okay, here's the deal. I'm looking to upgrade from my RAZR MAXX VE on Verizon (which is hardly any phone at all since Verizon strips them of all the features you pay for) to one of those nice new Apple iPhones. I'm a huge fan of Apple and an even bigger techhead and I really want in on the action of these devices! The only problem is that I already own a 160GB iPod Classic which I use for music. I have tons of music on my HD and 16GB will not cut it. I can sort of imagine myself just managing weekly playlists of what I listen to, though. Maybe. Do any of you think they'll be releasing a new one soon thus making my purchase too slow or do you think it's worth it? Keep in mind that they're $400 and up.
I think they are going to release a new one soon, its going to be 3G. Storage will probably increase too, but if you're comparing with a 160GB iPod, forget it! 3G is definitely worth waiting for, it makes a big difference. I talked my girlfriend into getting an iPhone, i can't get one as my company gives me a blackberry already. She was reluctant to get it but now she's completely in love with it, and I can't begin to list the ways it is better than my blackberry (no, I have no other Apple products, I'm a Windows/Linux guy). To me the iPhoneis a truly revolutionary product, miles ahead of the pack. Wait for 3G and get one.
yeah, you should wait for the next one. first generation cell phones have too many problems that tech hasnt solved. I have an HTC excalibur, and when it was purchased for me, I had no clue it was a first generation, and have had a few problems. the Iphone has problems with loading video off the net. My neighbor has one and she is forever waiting for it to load. other than that, she loves it. Thats such bullshit that verizon takes the features off.. I'd change companies.
The iPhone contains a Solid State Drive (SSD), meaning the 16Gb storage has no moving parts. The 160Gb iPod has a hard drive in it that has lots of moving parts. The difference is, an SSD will not fail if you drop it a lot. Eventually, a hard drive will fail. Not to mention SSD's have less latency (faster reaction speed). SSD's also use a lot less power, so longer battery life. I could get more technical from here but I won't. The iPhone is more than just a phone or mp3 player. It is a whole, complete computer. Something like a PDA is considered a "pervasive device" which is basically a very upscaled calculator. The iPhone is not a "pervasive device". Go to an Apple store or somewhere they have a display iPhone you can play with. I promise you will want it.
How can you not have a phone capable of taking video footage or being able to change the battery? Don't get me wrong, I have an Apple store near me with all their products layed out to mess around with. I spent a good half hour with the iphone and it's nice but there are far better phones with more gadgets on them. Also, I need a phone with a joystick as I'm a huge gamer and all touch screen phones have limited games for them. Just my own opinion. I need/want certain specialist gadgets on my phone and the iphone did not deliver them.
The battery is actually serviceable by a certified technician. In theory, the user should never worry about things like swapping out parts and batteries. Blue tooth is capable of a joystick and the iPhone surely has bluetooth capabilities. The average bluetooth wireless range is about five feet, depending on the device. Did you know that Quake3 was ported (made to work) on the iPhone? Lots and lots of excellent games are on their way. Anything from Pong to The Sims could run on an iPhone. Online gaming from anywhere would be nice.
That's debateable. If there is some specific gadget you need and the iPhone doesn't have it, then the iPhone isn't for you. But all phones are assembled from parts made by third party suppliers. Its the OS that integrates them that sets the iPhone apart. Nokia, Motorola, Sony, Samsung - they could make a decent phone back when phones were simple. But the more features and software and gadgets you add to a phone, the more the OS matters. And if Apple can make a better OS than Microsoft, what chance do Nokia, Mororola, Sony, Samsung have building a better OS than Apple? They have no chance and as phones get more complicated the gap is only going to get bigger. Microsoft has been ripping off Apple ideas for decades and they still can't catch up. Servicing batteries is a non issue, you're only going to use the phone for a 1.5-2 years anyway before the new latest and greatest phone comes out.
I still think my Ocean from Helio is far better. After selling my iPhone for one...I have never been more happy. Check it out sometime.
Sorry, but that's just an ignorant question, man. If you're into technology, it's a really handy gadget that integrates so many devices into one, and does so very ergonomically and in an aesthetically pleasing way. It's: 1) A cell phone with SMS capability; 2) An internet browser with YouTube compatibility; 3) An e-mail client; 4) A digital camera; 5) A calculator; 6) An iPod capable of playing lossless music files and 16x9 video files (it will hold several wide-screen movies at a time); 7) A stock ticker; 8) A mini-weather channel; 9) All kinds of other gadgets you can add on to it (basically, with all the available 3rd party apps, you can make it do almost anything a desktop computer can do, and a lot more, as it can be a remote control for all kinds of electronic devices too, and it's blue tooth enabled); 10) So, yeah, it's a hand-held touch-screen computer than fits in your pocket. It's the future today. Asking why anyone would want one is akin to asking why anyone would want a car, a television, or a computer.
my friend has one and i think its great. i wish i had one. they are very expensive though. and are on at&t's cell carrier. i heard they are coming out with an apple flip phone though.
i like the black berries. they are pretty decent but i dont know if you can store music on them or not. i iwl llook into it for you though.
Maybe so, but how pointless considering the iphone is not able to take video footage to upload to Youtube directly. It's the No1 reason why I never bought one, I need a built in video camera with flash memory that can be removed, maybe the next design will wisely have this, such a loss not to have it in my view.
Can you briefly put it, how iPhone is more of a computer, than a PDA? I studied it briefly and didn't get the point, and some folks say iPhone is just an advanced phone with a media player. Or advanced player with a phone to it? Excluding YouTube capabilities, email clients and all the other stuff PDAs can do as well, what is it that makes iPhone so much better than a PDA? I mean, for such money you can get a laptop and it will be a "whole complete computer" still portable, but with a larger screen. So, what makes it so special and ahead of PDAs?
I'd say the operating system is what makes it so special. Operating systems are Apple's core competency, whereas the mobile phone companies are hardware/electronics companies. The more features you add to cell phones, the more important the operating system becomes since that's what ties it all together. When you compare the iPhone OS to, say, Blackberry, it just isn't even close. Apple is miles ahead.
