I can see Wilco earning an alt country indie americanan type label.

for some of us, the fact that some of the bands we know eventually got radio play is still sinking in.

I'm talking about bands like The Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie, The Plain White Tees, Panic at the Disco, Say Anything...and all of those other "Indie" bands that just grabbed a mic and a synthesizer and called it Indie. I can't stand those bands. They only care about the money end of things, not the art involved.

What about Bright Eyes, Man-Man, Dr. Dog, Imogen Heap, Deerhoof, Arcade Fire, Danielson Famile, Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, John Vanderslice, Broken Social Scene, Islands, Stars, Cloud Cult, Explosions in the Sky, Pelican, Sigur Rós, Mogwai, Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Animal Collective, Six Organs of Admittance, Mew, Porcupine Tree, Muse, The Mars Volta, Los Hermanos, Battles, People in Planes?

That last statement kind of blows my mind because it is the exact opposite of what is happening. The reason most of these bands started out as indie was because they were on an indie label. For some reason some people have started to believe that this reflects a certain sound, but it does not. These bands are on indie labels and they make very little money with their music. Some of them even still hold day jobs. Or they tour constantly in order to pay their bills. I would have to say for a lot of these bands all that they actually have is the art involved.

The postal service, while I can't stand the music (but love the lyrics), is completley art and even postmodern in the way it was created. (The artists involved sent the tracks to each other through the mail and each added parts to make the sound, hence the postal service.)

Not only that but each inde label cultures a distinctive sound by collecting artists, The Fueled by Ramen label sounds nothing like the bands on Saddle Creek which sounds nothing like At the Drive Thru or Sub Pop.
I urge you not to think of "Indie" music as one collective sound, it is not. Genres or subgenres often associated with indie rock include lo-fi, post-rock, sadcore, C86, and math rock, to list but a few; other related (and sometimes overlapping) categories include shoegazing and indie pop. A lot of the bands you listed can be placed in their bigger genres very easy and most of it is all Rock and Roll to me.

I don't really think of it as a collective sound.I simply stated that most popular bands and artisits(i.e. the ones that get play on MTV) that are considered "Indie" these days don't deserve that label. It's more like, Manufactured Indie, if anything.

And hold on a second...I love Imogen Heap, The Mars Volta, and Muse. I also love: Rilo Kiley, Ingrid Michaelson, Dashboard Confessional, Fall Out Boy's old stuff, The Academy Is...,Kimya Dawson, Cat Power, Yael Naim... The list goes on...

And if you want to get technical about it, The Mars Volta is really just glorified Prog Rock.

That is an interesting little tidbit about The Postal Service, however. I still only like one song from them though.2 if you want to count thier cover of "Against all Odds".

Well I guess all that I was saying is that there is Indie Pop and then when you get to be that famous, I don't think you can be called indie anymore and you revert to your genre. Like Dashboard confessional was always considered emo, I never heard him called indie unless he is trying to latch onto that now. And no one calls Fall Out Boy Indie anymore.

That is the thing too, The mars volta is prog rock but they are on an indie label.

Hmm.. what happens when the indie scene goes mainstream again totaly like "grunge" what will it get relabeled as?

    Labels are weird.

I would like to make another recommendation: Yanka (aka Yanka Dyagileva). Russian rock singer, acoustic and folky. The lyrics are in Russian, but even the delivery is enough to draw someone to the music. Unfortunately, Yanka died in 1991.

If you're interested, you can download albums of hers for free on this site devoted to her.

Try Wishbone Ash. Started out in 1970, and still going today, albeit only one original member left. Many cd's to choose from, from the early ones including their all time best, Argus-a very folk rock type cd, to the newer cd's of today, and everything in between. Start by checking them out at www.wishboneash.com
