Now ive had my dreads for a while, and i still haven't washed em - is this a mistake, when should i wash them . I don't have any residue free shampoo right now, but they haven't even gotten wet yet?

don't be afraid to wash em! Keeping your hair clean will make your hairs knot better, trust me :) But be a bit careful when your dreads are still fluffy. if you are afraid that they will fall apart, you could even put a stocking on your head and let the soap water go through it. And a residue-free shampoo is a very good idea, especially if you've got straight, shiny hair yourself.

wash when they feel greasy. depending on your hair type, this could be every two days or every two weeks or even more if you have a really dry scalp. if you really have no soap to wash with (most clear soap bars will probably work ok) you can just wash with water. ive started doing that and im getting quite good results. but since yours are in the baby stages, soap is a good idea to get the excess oil out.
although, you shouldnt worry, you arnt going to wreck your dreads by not washing them for awhile. they just wont lock up as fast as clean hair.

you can wash em whenever you feel like it needs it. and if ya don't have any good shampoo, just use baking soda. works great.
