I'm looking for a beach town full of hippies, anywhere in the world...where is it? California is becoming too...expensive, trendy, overrun...any ideas?

Unfortunatly most coastal properties are becoming even more expensive than the capital cities. Orbost in Victoria has a number of hippies. It also has some of the best soil in Austraila. I ought to write up an FAQ for overseas visitors one day.

There are plenty of coastal communities up and down the east coast of Australia. Most of them are becoming more expensive, but everything is relative. I am sure the price of housing in these communities is ridiculously cheap when compared to California. Try looking at towns on the NSW Central Coast between Sydney and Newcastle, or for places south of Wollongong. Towns such as Berry are quite nice, but again a bit touristy. There are also plenty of places on the Queensland coast that are quite nice.

i'm an aussie and although the place is a little expensive, byron bay has got to be one of the best places in Australia. i've only ever been there once and it was the best place ever. the thing that surprised me the most is that in every town you'll find at least one maccas or kfc or something. this place has 2 subways. that it. how good is that?? plus it has some awesom cafes and just general shops as well with new age stuff n everythin. its great

California is not the only place where hippy beaches exist.
Australia has it too! There are numerous beaches in OZ which you might find good.

Like the Hyam's Beach in Jervis Bay, NSW isn't one of the most easily found beaches. Claiming to have the whitest sands around, Jervis Bay is more secluded than some of the beaches in Australia. Sunbathing is great here but the sun is so bright it's imperative you take sun screen along. :sunglasse

unfortunately if any of these communities are discovered they are swooped upon by the government/ real estate speculators/ people who eat human flesh.

There is one in Mexic. But dangerous. Because people came, and they feel good, and year passes, and when they awake and realise they should begin to moove, they realise suddenly that they stayed several years !!!

Byron Bay is cool, a great mix of hippies and surfers, but for the last few decades trendy types taking over.

I heard that Vancouver island was (prob still is maybe?) a great hippie place.

    its too late

byron is now over run by rich middle aged men from sydney with their child brides and offspring.

1995 seemed the last gasp for byron. go there now and you will find that vast swathes of the coats have been turned over to development. it used to be that if you walked 400m up the beach you would be totally alone , now this will never happen, even the nudists have buggered off leaving a few weirdoes who hang around in the bushes between byron and tweed heads.

the town used to be quite charming and i could see why people went there originally. people actually used to speak with each other without needing alcohol and would strike up conversation with anyone. now its a playground for snobs and drunken backpackers who are also snobs (go figure). you get the children of the middle class up there during the breaks as they try and find meaning in their lives by twirling fire sticks around or playing some instrument.

it used to be very different but instead ended up with all the attitude of sydney with the inconvenience of higher prices.

I wouldn't go to Byron again , well not for a long time, I really found it was full of plastic people the last time I was there.

There are remnants of the old Byron bay to be found, but its few and far between.

Everewhere seems to be getting more expensive and greedy these days, and I guess everyone is looking for an outlet to escape the madness and feel free to be themselves ( or "Find themselves"), unfortunatly they cant seem to let go of past controls, and end up bringing there horrible money driven plastic lives with them, where ever they go.

    Same shit different scenery.
