Not like this is a "new" issue or anything, but I just thought I'd like to discuss this. It just annoys me that fashion designers and advertisers are still indignant on how a woman should look - tall, long legs, large breasts. Think Victoria's Secret models. I want to see real women with real bodies and curves. Think about it, out of you and all your friends - who really looks like that? I'm a lesbian so sometimes when I see those women I feel a strange mixture of attraction and jealousy. Then I try and remember to be proud of how I look. I'm short, have small breasts and I'm very curvy from the waist down. I could never, ever be a Victoria's Secret model, but I'm going to be proud of how I look dammit! So who else is proud??

I have had a lot of trouble with body image. I'm very short and curvy, have always wanted to be the tall, slim one. My current boyfriend, however, insists that he has always gone for short, curvy girls, and I am practically a dream come true. So, right now, I am trying to learn to love my curves.
It is hard though, with the media telling all of us that we aren't beautiful. Which is terrible. How many girls have died because of it?

so basically you don't like how women are portrayed in the media because you're jealous.

yes we should change it because it's hurting your feelings.

men are usually portrayed as rich, super intelligent, low body fat and highly muscled, etc.

how many men are like that irl?

    oh well?

Well, what's your opinion on how you look? Are you proud or not? And the attitude is really not needed. I'm trying to make a positive statement on the female body image - to be proud.

i'm happy with the way i look, and apart from a couple of "vanity pounds" (it's really less than five and not even worth fretting over) i have no complaints. i see how women are portrayed in the media, and no, i'm not that tall, my lips aren't injected with fat from my ass, but i'm not about to complain about free speech and artistic expression.

yes, i r so teh troll i haev oppossing viewpointz i muzt be teh trollz

    It's getting beyond "hurt feelings"
    Pro-Ana?

But yeah, I agree, the negativity is not needed here. :)

how is it getting beyond "hurt feelings"?

do i need to tiptoe around everyone's feelings? should anyone have to do that?

No, I wasn't saying that at all.

I was referring to the medias effect on young girls. It is going beyond, as you said, "hurt feelings."
    As in the Pro-Ana movement.

oh. a few girls starve themselves. that sucks. but most of the girls weren't even fat to begin with, so it's more of a problem with them, not society around them.

    A few?
    No, I think not.
"Research suggests that about one percent (1%) of female adolescents have anorexia. That means that about one out of every one hundred young women between ten and twenty are starving themselves, sometimes to death."

I do agree that a lot of the girls might have their own problems to begin with, but when you suffer from low self esteem, the media telling you that you are fat does not make it any better.

The whole point of this was to be proud of your own body and for me to just basically bitch about how the media shoves unrealistic images of women at us.

Eh, I think Barbie is definitley unrealistic....she has no nipples for crying out loud! I know it's a kids toy but sheesh! Yeah, not a good image for growing young girls I must say.

i'm no victoria's secret model, not even close, but i can look at one and appreciate how unique and beautiful they are without feeling jealous or inadequate. i know how much the media portrays how women should look, but it's true, look around and see how many women actually look like that. i am pretty secure with the way i look, i appreciate my curves and i love them. most men really do prefer women with curves and not skin and bones.

You've got to tiptoe around anyone who brings up body image. Women just can't be happy with their bodies as is, so they seek these forums to reassure themselves they are OK. But if they are looking for hurt feelings how's this:

Let's face it, if they were OK body's, they would be models in Victoria's Secret. So, since they are a lesser female, let's just holla out that they suck and should take the poor, chubby men.

There, does that hurt anyone's feelings?

    oh i get it.

other women are insecure about their bodies because they're scared they won't get a man who has a lot of money.

    oooo i get it.

yes, we should all stop being so "shallow" ha ha.
