Hey all! So I'm beginning to seriously consider growing myself some dreads! I'd probably go with an average-slightly thinner look, and potentially leave some bangs out, too. I work as a security guard at a summer cottage/condo place, and that worries me a little - but my boss is really cool and I'm sure I could tie them back and make myself pretty presentable... :) The only other concern I have is that I play ice hockey. I'm the goalie too, so I don't know if the disgusting amounts of sweat/helmet head would be detrimental to my dreads, or even downright uncomfortable. Any thoughts, or anyone with similar experiences?

    Thanks guys. :)

just wash them when they start to get funky. shouldn't be a problem. actually, helmet head would help with the knotting process... and you would always look like a million bucks with helmet hair. i know i love waking up first thing in the morning and looking BETTER than the night before cause my dreads are all rumpled lol!

cool i think i'll give it a try then! another question that i just thought of though - how much do dreads tend to shorten up compared to your original hair? my hair's pretty much a medium length right now... a little past my collar bones. how short would the dreads be about?

if you're backcombing, it shrinkens up a few inches maybe? but if you are going natural, it takes a while so it continues growing as it locks up.

depends on your hair and your method...

I'm working on my 3rd set right now which hasn't shrank much at all... my first and second set shrank 2-3 inches.

I always use the natural method, sleep with a wool pillowcase to assist knotting.

I really need to learn to stop cutting my hair, lol.

love your pic too, naked :)
the only problem i can see is that you will probably need bigger helmet. i ride horses and my helmets dont come close to fitting over my dreads, its really annoying. i finally found a mens XL adustable and it just fits :)

I wear helmets a lot... biking, skiing, motorcycle, etc... I find that if I take out the padding they fit just fine... dreads are enough padding anyway :)
