Can more chicks be in bands please?

I'm kinda sick of the "female frontmyn + four guys in the background kinda blurring and indistinct" formula. I'm sick of bands getting attention just for having a girl in and then having it blow up in their faces. As it is, most of the time there's only one girl in a band, and she always lets herself be the centre of attention. Kinda sucks, and it's not doing anyone any favours in the long run.

So yah girls: please form bands.

The Flobots have a hot female violinist. She really keeps them from being just another pop band.

For the younger generation, my grandson's girlfriend (14 yo) plays guitar in a band. Her father was in an 80's metal band.

I'll go out and form a band, I have no talents and my singing sounds like an injured donkey, I can play only 5 chords on a guitar and can play bongos, but for you selfcontrol, I will go out and make it happen!

Hmm, usually when I see an all guy "band" and a female vocalist I don't know why but it always seems like the female vocalist doesn't fit in, well, nowadays it does back in the day it was different and just seemed to fit...

Dudette, bands have been formed based on a lot less! Seriously though, even relatively melodic bands usually aren't that good when they start out. I wonder if it's partly because guys are more content to play as a group, rather than as a frontman with a few interchangeable "grunts" that follow him/her around, but virtuosity doesn't seem to be as important (not saying it's not important or shouldn't be, but) they seem to be able to get bands off the ground with virtually no talent just by wanting it.

I'm just kinda confused, having done music and journalism for a while now, as to why girls still occupy the same spaces in the musical world that they did 30 years ago, or even longer ago. There's still the cliche of the performative frontwoman songstress, the all girl group and the girl indie bassist, and to be honest I've not seen much indication that girls are trying to challenge these cliches.

It probably seems kinda trivial in the grand scheme of things, but I think little things like this make up a larger whole in terms of getting to a point where gender is interesting rather than controlling or oppressive. I speak as a gay guy in a band, and we have the same kind of problem; people have a very specific expectation of what gay music should sound like - generally electronic, moody, incapable of talking about anything other than sex, gayness and "the tragic side of glamour" - and so many fags seem to be perfectly happy to either go along with that stereotype or let themselves become invisible.

I don't want to generalise (honest!), but they tend to not get on with other girls, and certainly not other girls in bands. It's become kind of a cliche that you have a girl-fronted rock/metal band with four guys playing all the music and her just going out screaming at people. I mean, I get that it's supposed to be Subverting How We See Women And Conventional Views Of Femininity, but all it's done is created a "second tier" of expectation/convention. It's just kinda weird that those bands almost never have more than one girl.

I think the thing is, it's important to get past the stage of female icons, where women feel they have to prove that they're better than men as a means to be allowed into the boys club. That's not where equality comes from. Equality comes from a few generations later, when you don't have to be "the best", or "better than them", and can just be good or bad without feeling that you're representing your gender.

i've seen enough TOTALLY uninspiring girl bands to have given up giving a shit entirely about who the hell is in a band and what equipment they sporting.

All girl bands do tend to be pretty bad, because they tend to form on the basis of their sex and not much else. It's all part of that same thing really, that girls still allow gender to define their approach in a way that it never particularly does for guys.

I just think it's important. There are other fields where women are a lot more prevalent now. There are more female than male authors, for example. And OK, there's still women-only prizes for literature, and very little justification for them being presented (there was something about it on the radio, and the sole response was "ooh, stop whining guys, you oppress us and stuff", despite all that inconvenient evidence and stuff), but for the most part it's not considered weird or even interesting now that a woman (or a man) is writing a book. I feel like, until we get to that stage in music, we're not going to get many truly great female artists - and to be honest, I think "men's music" suffers as well!

women's lit is pretty freaking aggravating to me, too. when did being a feminist mean "i'll support loads of boring, female sex based boring shit?" honestly.

The chick who drums for Lenny Kravitz is pretty shithot, or that girl from Boredoms/OOIOO

Like I said, I like when girls in the band aren't the sole focus of attention. Melt-Banana are pretty damned incredible as a band, yet I've never heard any feminist bleatings from them, they just get on with it. Compare that to that fucking trainwreck Beth Ditto.

I've got "Killer" on a compilation and that's incredible. Heard another track since that I wasn't so keen on but yeah, amazing vocals.

Thing is, it is at least getting to the point where a woman can get a shit review, or get a review that doesn't mention her gender at all. That's the important thing, I guess. I wonder if women notice how little a guy's gender matters a lot of the time. It's pretty awesome to be able to go on stage and have people guessing what you'll sound like based on your clothes rather than your norks.

To be fair, most "legitimate" music isn't much more complicated than that.

:) this be very true, I play in a band, some of the most comlicated music by Pink Floyd is simple Childish melodies played by adults...
and thats also a quote by Roger Waters. and he called the dark side of the moon a Simple symphony..
A good example of the basic was Momentary Lapse of Reason, Where all the songs are synthetic and synthetized..
Not being ignorant I love the floyd, /but the synthesizer was the great cheat and is the great cheat in most modern music..
    still the guys are geniuses...
my take on male music.. so not to offend the female sex...:)

The two most beautyful women in rock and roll. are Ann Wilson & Nancy Wilson of "Heart".. Take a look at them "Heart, Battle of Evermore on youtube"..

You should listen to Denali's "The Instinct". It's an amazing album.

Ever listened to any Lauryn Hill?

Female vocals used be to much more appreciated back in the day though... I will give you that.

Nico, Patti Smith, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, and on and on and on...

    Nico is just plain awful.

Well, if you're going to check anything, I'd say Boredoms and Melt Banana. Lenny Kravitz's drummer is "competent", but the music itself is gash.
