I think the varied responses so far (and those to come) have already proven what a socialogical study of any culture would conclude: There is no intentional paradigm to an organic culture, especially one whose constituents embrace the idea of open mindedness. One of the things by which I identify as a hippie is the fact that I don't fit in or seek to fit in to one idealogical norm, nor do I feel the need for others to fit in to my ideologies. My personal philosophies are devoid of political, financial, spiritual or any other agendas. I embrace love that encompases all people and ideas, though I only support those that have an aspect of humanism, by which I mean they foster peace, love, unity and respect. I don't stop loving people or ideas because they do not agree with my view of the world, or even when they cause me or others harm, but I do consider those kinds of people and ideas as unhealthy both for individuals and society as a whole, so I actively oppose any person or idea which harms another person or idea. Hippie culture was not an intentionally designed monolithic concept, but rather a social expression of certain ideas which, as they evolved and gained progressive momentum, might be described as having established certain shared values. But that's something you can only say about a culture on studying it post fact, once it's come to grow in size and influence enough to bear such study, and even then you can't have a definite answer, since it is an evolving organic process, as opposed to a static object. Hippies include a myriad of views, from different politics to different spirtual paths to different ideas on love, finances, resources, technology, ecology and everything else that makes up life, the universe and everything... and for the sake of having some where for all the people who don't fit in to have a place where they don't have to I hope no one ever tries to pin it down to a singular philosophical paradigm.
Sure, there a bunch of grand stereotypical values. But I'm so frustrated by the labels. Especially the hippie one. The group that most people would identify as hippies I think is really a group of peaceful anarchists. But we all have our own values and ideas. There is definitely not gonna be any set guidelines for free people. and Insecure? What the fuck? Yeah, choosing an alternative lifestyle is really a sign of insecurity. *sarcasm A lot of people are insecure.
I wouldn't say all hippies follow the same philosophy, but more follow the idelogy of the hippie and what it means to be a hippie.
I am new but I would say there is no definition of a hippie because a definition is a boundary and boundaries separate. my definition of someone like me is someone who is in a search for inner peace.
I would say to be a hippie is to go deeper and deeper into a thought so that you see as much of the position as mentally possible. And to know that there are all types of people who do what they feel is right, and to say that the establishment as it is is wrong is just as wrong as them saying that war is not meaning-less, because to most people it is, but to them the profiteers it isn't. Basically to me, I know what I am, I know what I would like the world to be like and I know to get it the way I want it, I have to do the things it would take to get it there, anything is possible, look at where we are now. I am quite sure a thousand years ago and beyond that, the people of Earth did not foresee such a monetarily ruled place, but there was definitely war, it is like I said, part of a percentage of human beings nature, what percentage I do not know, need war like others need peace. But in my realm I am peaceful, but I will also let my instincts take over if I see danger coming my way. War is not that, war is systematic, absolute peace is also sytematic, it takes a rule to keep peace if not all are peaceful. But rules hinder humans and rules are meant to be broken. To me it is just just another minute aspect of eternity which revolves around its self, this subject is a deep pool with an answer? If someone knows then they are wiser than all moments in the universe.
