It depands what you mean by "fairly portrayed". I can think of loads of films by male directors that portray women as equal to men, or even better, and many films don't portray women as simply sex objects. Overall, I wouldn't say that unfair portrayel of women in films stands out as much as unfair portrayel of certain races or nationalities, or even certain types of people, with age being a big issue. The only real issue I can think of at the moment what it comes to women in films is that in many cases women are seen as weak and needing rescue (the whole damsel in distress issue), and often as the causes of problems due to both their physical and mental weakness, with the mental weakness being the most annoying. Of cource, many historical films portray women in a way that today would be seen as totally unfair but in the time it was made or set were more accurate.
Sadly their arn't enough mainstream female directors to compare how they would represent women (and men) in their films.

I agree. Look at what Penny Marshall did with A League of Their Own.

penny marshall sure does blow... but look into amy jones. she was the director for the slumber party massacre films. it's a known fact that her and rita mae brown (the movie's writer) are known feminists. interesting stuff really, to see feminists doing a movie for such a mysogynistic genre.

A director can only do so much with the material they're given.
In protraying women, the writer and screen-writer are fundamental as well.

By the way, who directed Emma Thompson in the movie 'Wit'?
Who directed Charlize Thoren in the movie 'Monster'?
Were they male or female directors?
I wish I could remember, because these were two of the greatest female roles that I have ever seen.

this is ridiculous...95 % of the greatest directors were male ...now it's evolvin'
But every director show you a woman differently...
Check the Movies from Brian De Palma ...from the 70's...
Obsession(75),Carrie (76), Furie (78), Pulsions(80)...this is great cinema...he had a strange relation with woman in his movies...Obsession is maybe the best...
There is so many great directors...i've took just one in hundred others

Many male directors have excelled in female-themed films (that's P.C. for chick flick), but like George Cuckor (who every top female actress died to get on the helm of their movies) many of them are/were gay so I'll suppose they don't count.

But the one case of a thoroughly male director (as far as I know) making an excellent female themed film would be Martin Scorsese and "Alice doesn't live here anymore".

Ridley Scott, Thelma and Louise. He's another good example, unless the man just sat on his chair and let Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis take over the set.

But I'm willing to bet that the portrayal of any given sexuality in a film stems more from the script than from the direction.

I just looked up "Alice doesn't live here" and it kind of confirms this theory for now. The writter, Robert Getchell, is certainly male, but the following are his credits:

    1. Client, The (1994) (screenplay)
    2. This Boy's Life (1993) (screenplay)
    3. Point of No Return (1993) (screenplay)
... aka Assassin, The (1993/I) (Australia) (UK) (USA: video title)
    4. Stella (1990) (screenplay)
    5. Sweet Dreams (1985)
    6. Mommie Dearest (1981)
    7. "Flo" (1980) TV Series (character)
      Bound for Glory (1976)
    8. "Alice" (1976) TV Series (characters) (creator)
    9. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) (written by)
Only two of these credits are not centered around women so he's certainly in touch with his female side.

Oh, funny!: Thelma and Louise was written by female writter-director Callie Khouri (Divine secrets of the ya-ya sisterhood).

You might want to look up other examples, though, but for now I'm kind of convinced the director has little to do with it.
