Death metal tends to be sludgier, dirtier and arguably more primative. Black metal tends to be more baroque and complex, colder and more precise. But there's a fair bit of crossover between genres and not a huge amount of difference.

Actually I think of it completley differently, I think death metal is more complex and technical and black metal can just be Minor Chords and scales.

    Anyway Genres mean nothing.

Genre may be irrelevant, but it's better to get it right. Like with emo. They're both pretty technical.

of course there is! have you been living under a rock? Black metal is bands such as Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, very vampire like bands. and death metal is bands such as arch enemy, a very distorted phlegm muffled sound. : :H anyway, hope this answers your question

Can we stop with the obsessive classification, please?

    It's damn confusing.

Cradle of Filth = black metal!? Sorry, but pretty much everyone I know would find this piss funny. Maybe once, way back, they were, but CoF are to black metal what Busted are to punk.

If you think this is genre-obsessive, I think it's about time we got emo on yr asses.

    Yeah cradle has mellowed alot.

I wouldent say theres alot of vampire-ness in black metal, they just like corpse paint and rather large spikes, but then there are other black metallers who think the whole corpse paint thing is selling out.

death metal, black metal. Lets all try to be faster than everyone else, but have no talent whatsoever, and have to hide behind gimpy makeup. Be original, or dont bother. Listen to neurosis if u want hear original metal.

You're a dick! It takes alot of damn talent to play fast and tight, lets see you try to get up past 200 bpm!
