In which way, the woman was very far from perfect, in fact, probably the other end. She took in a lot of blood money from dictators, most of which went to the vatican or her own ministry rather than the poor. The hospices she set up were pretty appalling too, working on the doctrine that pain brought people closer to christ (this would be stupid even if it wasn't for the fact that the majority of patients were hindus)

If you mean this in a christian bashy way I apologise for misunderstanding you. But the woman was by no means a good example. There are much better christians out there, who've actually done good for the world such as the liberation theologians out in south america. (There's one who's name I forget, but he stood up to a certain regime, leading to his extradition and assasination)

Well then i failed to illustrate my point. Doesn't mean it isn't valid, just a bad example. What I was hoping to illustrate to FedUp is that him being able to cite one or two awful Christians doesn't prove anything.

I'll look for a better example.

Hehe no worries, they do exist, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Óscar_Romero

There's Oscar Romero, the priest that spoke out against the violation of human rights and the abuse of the poor in Al Salvador and ended up dead because of it. Sorry that I mixed up a few things earlier about him being excommunicated. He wasn't, though the vatican refused to side with him during his life, saying they had to be apolitical.

The excoummication happened to a hell of a lot of liberation theologians in south america when John Paul II decided to attack any elements of the church he thought to be communist (liberation theology involved the building of communes for the poor)

This is the frustrating thing: I know they exist. They're just not famous. No-one wants to hear about Christians who are just good people, they only want to know about the ones that go bad.

Yeah, that is the problem, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberation_theology#Liberation_theologians there's a few there.

Mother Teresa's the one that springs to mind most often, but she was mostly only promoted so much by the vatican to take heat offa the whole covering up of paedophile priests. (god that was some awful grammar in that sentence, sorry)

There have been plenty of great christians in the past (and present), just as there have been great muslims, buddhists, jews, atheists, hindus, sikhs, pagans etc, etc. I completely disagree with Fedup on his whole all christians are evil idea because people are people, some are going to be hypocritical bastards (a la the past few popes) and some are going to be great people ( a la Oscar Romero) what religion they are doesn't make the blindest bit of difference.

They're clearly not doing what they're doing because they think Gods gonna wank em off in heaven, they're doing it because they know it's the right thing to do.
