in a few days i'll be moving out onto my 20 acres. theres nothing on it, so i'll basically be camping out for months until i can get a cabin built up. i do have a tiny camper and a tipi, also got a carport set up for like... a workshop or a kitchen, i already built a wood floor inside, spent like 100 bucks for it, its insane how much wood costs. theres no electricity there so i'll be going solar but i dont know when i'll be able to get that set up. i will have a phone, the old kinda that dont need an electric line. haha... i may get a DSL line out there and hook it up once i get my laptop fixed. for washing i have a well nearby with awesome water, i'll be using solar shower bags... which wont be to much of a hassle, right now i don't have running water so its nothing new, i've washed my clothes by hand aswell... i'll have a compost toilet setup in the mini A-Frame thats built which again is nothing new i've been using a compost toilet for a couple years now. no electricity! wont be able to watch my movies/dvds! lol or get on the net for quite some time, gonna be using candlelight which is way bad on the eyes if ur trying to read at night. so i'll probably be going to sleep early now and gettin up before the sun, which has been the opposite these days, lol... eh its gonna be a really weird change. i'll try and get a few pics in before i leave... ahhhhhhhhhhh!
I'd like to see some picture of the land. You are 21 and you own 20 acres?!? I wanna know what your job is man...
well im still paying for the land at a monthy rate of $400. im not alone in this my pop is helping, so we switch months on payments, we are both self employed in making/selling vintage native american arts/crafts... the guy selling the land is a friend of mine so if im late a week or two he doesnt mind. he recently raised the acre amount since land around here is going up in prices... but he hasnt raised it for us, im still paying the same amount of $2,160 per acre. hes raised it up to $3,500 an acre, at 20 acres thats $70,000, but since im still paying the norm at what we agreed to, im buying the 20 acres for $43,200. im still packing up stuff here, but maybe i'll get out there tomorrow and snap a few shots of what the campsite looks like so far. my car recently broke down its been in the shop for like a week now! so my friend is helping with the move since hes got a good ol pickup and a trailer. the weather is suppose to be pretty cloudy/rainy for a couple days, damn weather. i havent got the tipi or the tiny camper in yet, probably do that tomorrow with the truck. oh and i recently just bought like a bunch of lights. bought some 4 little solar garden lights ($35), 2 lantern type lights that are also solar ($20, ebay) and rechargable. and 2 oil lamps and another rechargable lantern (not solar). but i'll be sure to try and get some pics in before i go!
sounds cool man, what are your plans to do on the field? I'm sure you could run a small business... or you plan on living on your self that's it that's all.

did you pack some natural bug repellent that you can put on your skin safely? those little buggers can ruin everything if you're not prepared for them.
beautiful! lucky you what make is that composting toilet? im trying to find the most affordable one i can.
a word of advice take some anti biotics with you when you get sick it will happen quickly, probably from drinking the well water unless you filter it in some way- yes even spring water can make you sick, you could end up with a throbbing ear infection quite easily. you will also need some way of communicating with the world in an emergency
hey, im back... sorta, the weather has been bad! like the first week it was nice and sunny now its all rainy... been living in the tipi, the fire keeps things dry but the humidity in the air sucks! i do have dogs, got 4 huskies, so far they're loving the move, new territory to smell. i recently got an pretty decent camper. year of make '77. had a few leaks like above the windows where the caulk/glue was kinda dried out, but now its fixed. got a working stove to. @guy, i've been drinking this well water for years, i haven't been sick since 2005. whew. i'll have to come back later, im running my computer on the generator oh and i also hooked up the tv in this carport. haha.
I've done this like 3 times and am interested in the cabin construction. I haven't done it but felling your own trees and squaring them with an adze might be an economical alternative to milled lumber. The only problem with that is an adequate overhang to keep things dry. The materials for a wood floor ran about as much as pouring a slab, and the moisture consideration would have me pouring the slab over a suitable moisture barrier. LOL! I lived in a tiny camper while constructing a prefab log cabin and even when the water froze in the dog dish inside and we cut wood in the snow it wasn't enough to force us back into the camper. Space is nice.
we built our lil cabin from the trees here,, its actually possible to square logs up with a chain saw,, hell with some practice you can cut fairly thin boards free hand..thats what we did for the 4x4 beams supporting the loft. economical it is,,if you dont count your labor. we had about 500 man hours into the cabin before we got it dried in.. if your interested heres a slide show.. http://www.kodakgallery.com/feelfreefarmproject/main/the_log_cabin
