this may sound stupid. but i need my dreads to be no frizz, i dont want to use gel (if best solution i will) but I am going to a VERY VERY formal event, and need to know if there is any way I can get the frizz toned ( i just need a less frizz solution if at all possile)

    Knottyboy Tropical Tightening Gel.
A smaller-than-your-pinky-nail size will do for each dread, assuming they're medium length. I use it for job interviews, dates, formals, ect. Works wonders.
The best thing is you use it right after you get out of the shower, and it doesn't flake or give you dandruff or dry scalp.
    Instant-Anti Frizz, basically.
You can use it on dry hair too, but I wouldn't reccommend it. Kinda leaves it stiff until you wash your hair again.

To comment on the post above, I wore a stocking to bed for the first month of my dreads, and I found it made me frizz like crazy. Worse with hats. They just keep down the poof.

I know how you feel. At my court date today my frizz looked pretty bad so right before, I just wet it down and hoped for the best. It somehow looked almost decent, but finding an effective & safe way to control frizz would be a life saver for my future court date(s).

I don't mind frizz at all myself (I kinda like the way it looks) but its just not practical for any formal setting.

Maybe Ill get yelled at here but Ive used natural beeswax a couple times when I had be somewhere important.(ie, parent teacher conferences) It melts at really low temperature so easy to get out, its light, it has a nice smell. I just used a itsy bitsy amount on my palm and rolled my dreads. As far as I can tell it came right out in the next wash, even if it didn't I used such as small amount I'm sure it has very little impact on the process.

how old are the locs? I could get away with a light layer of an all natural conditioner or coconut oil after mine hit a year. (then again, I was able to unloc them at 2 years)
younger ones, aloe is probably the better bet.

what's the situation, and can you braid the locks down your back?

No to any and all waxes. Wax, used super-sparingly is not as evil as everyone around here thinks, but it's still pretty damn bad, and is simply not appropriate for this situation.

I would have to third Soaring Eagle's suggestion, get 100% Aloe Vera Gel, dilute it somewhat simply with water, and use that. It will 'stick' the frizzies onto your existing locks, condition and nourish the hair in your locks, and it washes out with water.

Soaring I don't know why you're so against Knottyboy products. It's Dreadhead you should be preaching against.
If you actually look and read what Knottyboy puts in their Tightening/Anti-Friz Gel "Locksteady" this is what it has to say (condensed):
PURE ALOE VERA Gel and Citrus Juices combined with vitamins and hempseed oil. It is a light, WASH OUT formula, bringing loose hair under control instantly. All natural.

And it's already maximum diluted so you don't have to worry about diluting it enough so it doesn't get stuck and gunky in your locks!!!

It includes extra stuff thats better for the locks that the Aloe gel alone does. I think you need to do a little more indepth research instead of instantly saying avoid anything with a K-Boy lable on it.

And if you need further proof here are the ingredients as listed on the jar:
Aloe Barbensis Juice (Aloe Vera), Algin (Seaweed Gel Base), Sucrose, Cannabis Satriva (Hempseed) Oil, Grapefruit (Citrus Grandis) Extract (and) Glycerin (Grapefruit Seed Extract) Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Aqua and Hydrolysed Oat Protein, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime), Essential Oil

    ALL GOOD STUFF.

Their ant-itching spray isnt bad either nor their dreadshampoo, though a bit expensive(mom of two growing boys here) So I agree with you so far its been nothing but helpful but I will turn to dr.brunners when I run out of the shampoo bar.

SUCROSE... that's a sugar! agh! why would you put that in your hair? first of all, you'll have bees swarming all over you thinking you're their newest hive.

secondly, why pay so much money for something you don't need? i mean... yeah... you've got all those "good for you" oils in the gel. but guess what? oils are detrimental to the locking process! and don't always wash out! it may seem like it washes all the way out, but my shampoo doesn't always wash all the way out... i have to really work to get it out.

to the original poster... aloe vera gel would be your quickest, cheapest, and way best for your dreaddies bet. especially if they are babies. wash, palmroll, and put a little in, to help it smooth down, then put in a nice style (pulled back tight, braided, whatever works) if they're long enough, and you should be good to go.

I've had absolutly no problems with bees.
You're suppose to use it when your dreads are wet, thus eliminating frizzies as you roll a dab into your lock and pretty well disolving by the time they're dry. Still having your hair frizzless.

My favorite style for emergency events are a french braid and a scarf. Using the aloe (which I also fully recommend) will make them look even neater - looks fab braided!

And, don't forget to smile. Alot. : )

i would say dont even try to fix them. if your at a formal event with dreads, no one will notice if their frizzy or not. you'll get stared at as it is...

my dreads are about 2 months or so, and i'm very strong on not tying them up for any reason at all, and i really dont mind the frizz, but i dont want to be the pushy "i'm a rebel" girl with all the rich in-laws around. i think i'll do the aloe vera gell diluted. THANKS SO MUCH!
