Maybe the swans are hungry. I remember the time I lived in Caversham. There were thousands of swans, variant swans and occasional canada geese. They used to mug me of my bread. They also liked the shiny keys which I used to have around my belt. They pecked at them too. They act all gracious and majestic on the river, ruffling their feathers so that to resemble Marilyn Monroe in her heavy feathered cloak. But really, swans are as cunning as the weasel.
