So, i fervently believe that andrew jackson was possibly the bigest douchebag to ever run this country, his policies on native american relocation are bordering on genocide. Any one agree with me?

I got some specifics for ya. Andrew Jackson was responsible for the indian removal act of 1830, better known as the trail of tears where the cherokee indians were removed from THIER land and forced to march several hundered miles to what is now known as Oklahoma. Over 4,000 indians died on this march from hunger, disease and exhaustion.

This is just one example of what that scum bag piece of shit Andrew Jackson was responible for. Like many whites of his time he was a murderer taking land from the true owners of this country the INDIANS.

Andrew Jackson's policies toward the American Indians were bad. Neverthelss, he made the United States more democratic. I believe it was during his administratin that sufferage was extended to all white men regardless of income. Blacks and women (to say nothing of American Indians) could not vote, but it was a step in the right direction.

andrew jackson was a capitalist pig, but im not really sure if i would rate him as worse than our current president. i probably would have to have lived in that era to make the call.

Why is it that all capitalists have to be pigs? I just don't understand it, it's a hell of a lot better than being communist :D

Well he was responsible for the Trail of Tears but that wasn't all his fault. He was always noted as being "The People's President," and being that he normally did what the common man wanted, and back then the majority of people were racist. He did numerous good things for America and helped the average person a great deal.

As for him being a "capitalist pig," isn't this country supposed to be a capitalism? Especially before the 1900's when capitalism was part of the American dream. Only in modern society is the idea of socialism becoming known to Americans.

Do you know any other bad things that Andrew Jackson has done other than his relations with the Native Americans? I can't really think of any, except maybe expand presidential powers, but even that he didn't do a great deal.

Any president that has open parties in the white house is fine with me :cheers2:

My bad. It was actually U. S. Grant. Wow, do I feel like a jackass. Please proceed with the Jackson debate and please remember. There is a reason some people are on our money while other's are not. Do you hear me, Martin Van Bueren?

Do you have any evidence to back that up? The main allegation of anti-semitism against President Grant was the infamous "Order 11"
[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Order_No._11_(1862)] which was intended to expell jews from Grant's military district. Order 11 was issued in 1862 in a time of war and long before Grant's presidency.

There is quite a bit of debate as to whether General Grant had anything to do with it, many believe the order was erroniously sent out in his name.

Here is an interesting article on the subject:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_Grant#Anti-semitism

Here are some exerpts from the article:

"Grant maintained that he was unaware that a staff officer issued it (order 11) in his name."

"The issue of anti-Semitism was raised during the 1868 presidential campaign, and Grant consulted with several Jewish community leaders, all of whom said they were convinced that Order 11 was an anomaly, and he was not an anti-Semite. He maintained good relations with the community throughout his administration, on both political and social levels."

If you have anything else to support your claims please post them here. I would be very interested to hear more about this aspect of Grant's presidency.

Let's not forget Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, both of whom authorized genocide (conventional and nuclear firebombs) against Japanese civilians. But maybe that should be put on the 'worst President' thread.

Looking at the Jackson era, let's not forget that not long before that, the Iroquois nations as well as other native peoples were systematically murdering white settlers. Example: The siege of Forty Fort, Pennsylvania in 1788, in which the surviving white males were burned alive. No one had clean hands in that struggle.

But generally speaking, the Indians were cleaner than Jackson. The Indians were defending their homelands, Jackson was just a bigot who wanted to steal some Indian land and get rid of as many Indians as he could in the process.
