    Strange question perhaps.
But are there any places that are less touched by western civilization in japan/china. And are more like pre-1940 or something ? Like smaller villages and such with more of the traditional architechure of china/japan and less of the concrete buildings and neon lights?

    Know what I mean?

    peace

yes, i've heard of this place called the The Big deep. I think it is being preserved and it's really is a paradise. And for architectural places, I saw this Historic Monument of Ancient Nara. It very beautiful and old.

Nara is hardly 'untouched'... it's a major tourist destination. But yeah, there's a lot of history there, and friendly deer on the streets and in the parks as well!

Most Japanese cities are made up of older style buildings mixed in with those put up after the war (it was a rush job so the buildings often leave much to be desired aesthetically). You still see the triangular roofs with the plaster tiles.

There aren't too many places without modern conveniences or 'western influence'. And if there are, it's because no one knows about them... and if they do know, they tend not to tell people. Sorry... if you want to find something untouched, you're going to have to do some traveling and discover it yourself.

Um..Its been a while since the 1940s so dont think that you will find any place in Japan or China that will look like pre-1940s ;)

If you are looking for classical architecture, Kyoto and Beijing are the best accessible places in Japan and China respectively that I have been to, you will find more in Japan than China as a lot of historical architecture were destroyed by the Communists during the Cultural Revolution. Parts of Shanghai has very interesting colonial architecture as well.

Japan is a first-world country and China is rapidly industrialising, so there wont be too many places there that are untouched by "western civilisation", if you go to rural Kyushu or Okinawa, then you might find an old village or two, but dont be surpirsed if you see all the modern gadgets that we have in Europe and North America. Saying that, there are many beautful old towns and villages in Yunnan and Guangxi province in southern China, and there are places in western China which still has a very interesting and distinct Islamic culture.

I use to live in Asia btw. But book that plane ticket and find out for yourself! :)
