allright guys, i was just wondering becuase i have never taken opiates for pain...do you still get high off of them, and is it worth the pain if you had an endless supply of your opiate/opiates of choice???

I think that's a good question. with bad enough pain, it doesn't matter how much you like opies, you'd still rather be without the pain than to have opiate access. when i'm in pain and take oc's, the pain goes away and I still enjoy the recreational rush just as much, but that might be different for someone who has worse pain than I. if I had to choose between chronic headaches and a rx for oc's and no pain and no pills, i'd still take the pain and the pills; the good with the bad :)

thats very interesting. I think i would choose otherwise. i love experimenting with psychedelics and opiates, but health is much more important. One thing i like about drugs is going back to normal afterwards. If i wouldnt go back to normal, I wouldnt even try the drug.

Ya and I know people that abused there pain man. doc and there meds.

And guess what, your tolerance goes up and then the doc says no more and then your fucked with pain.
I've been on them for 3 yrs. and I take the same meds. So when I get older there still drugs that will work for me.
Sure I could go in every 4 months and wine to my doc that my meds aren't working, and he will give me more..
But what am I going to do when I get older and need them and they don't work..
What your talking about is a very bad idea.
I wish I never had pain like I do. ITS FUCKED

    Have fun:)

Do you realize what a hassle it is to go through pain management especially some dr's that would rather that you suffer then give you anything that might get them into trouble. It's a fulltime job! Then when and if you get something you need to hassle with refills and convincing the assholes that sparingly give it out that you really are in pain and not just a fucking junky. It wears you very, very thing and believe me it pisses me off when people just pull shit because some people actually need the medication while the other 85% are after a fix!

also, I want to point out that regular access to even reasonable amounts of opiates is an almost certain road to addiction/dependance.

I've had a chronic pain issue for about a year now, and although I am not addicted currently, I am certainly dependant on my oxys/percs to get me through the day. without them (and pod tea for when I run out early) I would be totally screwed.

chronic pain nearly always comes with dependance on narcotics. and remember, please, the difference between addiction and dependance.

I am really glad i stumbled on this thread. I just wanna tell you my story first before i answer your thread!
    (I will keep it short)

I am 29 and a few years ago i was put on Percocets when i came home from the hospital after my lung collapsed. Then i had some other crazy crap happen to me where basically every time i finished the script another incident would happen and i was once again prescribed percs.

Finally a year and a half ago i had no more tragic accidents and no more percs.

I literally went insane. I had no clue that i had developed such an addiction to them. I did notice though when i was on them that i no longer suffered from depression and anxiety. I finally felt "normal". Of course throughout this whole time i developed a tolerance and had to take more and more to get rid of the pain.

Finally i was tapered off them this january of 08. ANd of course now that all my pain is back b/c of another health problem, I cant even take it.

I will never be the same! I am now back to figuring out what anti-depressant will work best for me. Obviously the percs were the best med for that.

But the governement will never approve percs/vics/ etc for depression b/c of the tolerance buildup.

So for me they never made me high b/c i think i am just chemically imbalanced. So no matter how many I took they just made me feel normal, happy, sane, energetic, hungry and healthly.

In other people it does the opposite to them .
But answering your question, I would rather have the physical pain and percs so i could feel normal and happy.

Becuase without them, I am still in pain but mentally sad now too.

Hope i answered your question! (plus i think i just needed to vent about missing them too- so thank you for providing me this thread as the outlet)!

prozac was a miricale for my brother and sister,,, i was on welbutrin for a while but i really cant help u out cuz i suffer from bipolar disorder, and have taken wellbutrin.seroquel.lamictal.depakot,remeron,trileptal, and tegretol for this...i am now currently taking ONLY seroquel for insomnia,,,cuz all the moodstabilizers make you flat, unable to be happy or sad, and id rather cycle happy one day and depressed the next than feel no emotion at all,,,and with the anti depressants, i just dont like them because i feel they stop working after a while, your body gets used to them etc...i dont like NEEDING anything to function properly, i dont like being happy bacuse i cant be without my medicine, so i just stoped taking everything alltogether, xcept the seroquel cuz i really cant sleep for shit

When I take them for pain, I still feel a boost in my mood, but being that I'm in pain, it's not as big of a boost. If you take a drug--any drug--when you're feeling your best, in a good mood, physically comfortable, you can expect a better high than if you're in a bad way to begin with. They stress set and setting with psychedelics, but the same is true with all drugs.

yeah that's right on, codone. unfortunately the opposite circumstances are when people are more likely to take something to get high, as a means of escape. once the high wears off, their problems are still there, and often they get high again to avoid feeling bad. but if you take the drug when you're in a good mood, the high wears off and your good mood is there waiting for you (for the most part).

people often look at neg. emotion as an aberration, an unholy exception to the normal state of happiness, and feel justified in relieving that emotion with a substance (i.e. going to get drunk after a breakup). they don't realize the negative emotion is a form of fuel, to move them to action to resolve circumstance and feel true happiness again, in a greater state of happiness than before because of what it required. the sooner a person knows they are meant to feel negative emotions, the sooner they achieve happiness again, because they know you can't have one without the other, and the more they embrace unhappiness the more happiness embraces them.

Wow burnabowl, you seriously just freaked me out! I have been dealing with some negative emotions and worrying if i would ever feel happy again. But then i read what you wrote above and it hit me really hard. I never thought of it like that, but it makes total sense! You just gave me such hope. I can't even explain how much better i feel!
Thank you so much for making a difference in my life!

thanks, perky. i'm overwhelmed by your response. i'm glad you found the principle useful, and I think you were ready for a hopeful attitude anyway. sometimes all we need is a few words as a catalyst to actualize something that's hanging just below the surface of conciousness. we just need to be reminded.

I feel like I repeat myself a lot with what I posted, but it's something I believe in fiercely, and i'll repeat it till I die. certain friends have heard it innumerable times and just say "yeah yeah I know what you mean," but I don't think they really do, perhaps because they haven't conditioned themselves to respond as fervently as you did. or because they don't like the thought of soberly embracing all their emotions, good and bad.

    seriously though burn,

you really did make an excellent point here. the use of negative emotions as a catalyst for change is an incredibly important idea that many people just don't think about.

    Thanks for posting
