I'm protesting the high gas prices. Our government could do something, like regulating those bastards who sit in the top floor offices of the oil companies and brag about billion dollar profits. They regulate a lot of things, but they choose not to take those asses down a few pegs. So, why is that? Bush is an oil man. Cheney is an oil man. How many of our elected officials are oil people? How many hold stock in an oil company? They won't do something that could hurt them. So, join me... Get a printer, make a protest poster (nothing violent, please. I want people to hear the message, not hate us.) make some copies... Hop on a bike or something at night, and go hang them in conspicuous and not so much so places... I've already got some picked out. I'm gonna stuff some mailboxes too. Join me. This isn't just going to affect gasoline. Oil, natural gas, fuel oil, any petroleum product... It's all going up... Let's show them how disgusted we are with them all. Once again, no violence. Don't go beat up a gas station owner just because you want to protest something. I don't care what happens, stay strong, and no violence. I choose to protest in vocal silence, covertly placing signs and posters at night. If they don't know who exactly is doing it, they can't really catch me, and they can't do jack if they don't like it. However you may choose to protest, do it. Just don't get violent. Also, join me in saying how disgusted we are with our politicians (yeah, that includes McCain, Hilary, and Obama. They're part of the problem too.) who take numerous trips in their private jets and expensive cars on their heavily padded salaries... Al Gore, who preaches global warming (which I think is a load of crap, but let's not debate that here) and yet has a huge house that still sucks up massive amounts of electricity, no matter how many compact fluorescent bulbs he packs in it. They don't practice what they preach... If our presidential candidates are so focused on change, then I ask them... What the hell are you going to do about fuel prices crippling our economy? Fuel goes up. Cost of transporting goods goes up. Meat, dairy, vegetables, and everything else... It all goes up. Inflation, the dollar dropping... We get less for more now. Who is that helping? No one. It's killing our economy. I guarantee, if we dropped gas prices to $1.00 per gallon of gasoline and $1.50-$2.00 per gallon of diesel, only for one month, we'd see the economy jump to attention and function again. Let us protest this gross injustice... This isn't just America... Canada, your gas prices are outrageous too. I have friends up north, and they're flumoxed as to how this is happening. and Britain? Look at your gas prices... We need to stop this... NOW! Speak out, whether silently, like me, or vocally. Once again, don't get arrested, no violence, and furthermore... Say what you want about any government, but don't sit there and say you want to see the gov't fall or something. Don't give them more reason to watch you...
Now there's a good cause. I'm sick of living like a serf so I can afford to get to work in the morning! If I could ask, how does putting up posters help gas prices? By raising awareness?
Do you even know who owns the Major Oil companies? Do you know who puts regulations on the Petroleum industry that drives up prices?
why dont you let us know who makes the money oil dude! tell us the names of your stock holders! and how much they make! tell us how it is that there is record profit and why! when these same componies have yet to pay the fishermen for the destruction of their liveliehood! tell us how YOU profit from OUR natural recorces! you ready to divulge that info?
and then tell us why these comanies kill, murder assassinate, create coups, overthrow democrataticly elected govornments, to gain control of their natural recorces! and think that it is right! so tell us oildude!
There's nothing better to start a revolutionary change in defective policy than taking a whole bunch of people who are pissed off, but not enough to speak up and do something about it, and getting them pissed off enough to speak up and do something about it. So many people don't know the facts... I think it's time people heard some of the facts... Econ101 can tell anybody with a brain that what the oil companies and their puppets in the gov't are doing to us is going to pull us under the dirty water. As of now, we're barely treading enough to stay afloat, and the waves are getting higher. If the economy keeps sinking, America could wind up with another market crash. We could wind up paying the same gas prices that people pay in the U.K. We need to define a good set of proven fact and econ theory to present to the public. First off, we know that Bush is an oil man. That should be enough to raise some red flags. We know he's not going to help us. As I stated earlier, higher fuel prices drive up the cost of everything... Food, garbage collection and recycling, raising animals, building materials, manufactured goods... It all gets a massive price jump. Prove that with econ theory and good examples of it, and you're as good as in the door with some people. Now, we need to do some poking around and find out how many of our politicians (including the presidential candidates, and I'd bet a nutshot that at least one of them has stock in an oil company) who "have our best interest at heart" are actually involved in big oil. Cite references... If people get pissed off enough, something will happen. At the end of each poster, I'm going to be sure to put the address of my state's senators, reps, and governor. If enough letters come in, they'll get off their asses and try to please us because we'll piss them off. When they don't please us, we keep going until they get pissed enough that they'll do anything just to make the flow of letters stop. The squeaky wheel does get the grease... and I hope we can make the wheel that is a movement against high fuel prices squeak so loud that it rips the fluff out of the ears of those in governments all around the world.
The government COULD take the billions of tax dollars that it GIVES big oil and use it to sponsor the development of alternatives. That would do a hell of a lot more to break our "addiction to oil" than talking about it- which is all they've done to this point. All the campaign rhetoric, all the speeches, every mention in a state of the union address is calculated into FOOLING the average voter/taxpayer into believing that the government gives the slightest fuck about them... and the FACT that what might be our discretionary money is getting siphoned into the bloated profits of those who bought the influence to begin with.
Well an imact you are not hearing about but soon will be seeing more of in your supermarket is the impact it is having on the trucking industry. I know of 10 owner operaters that are having to file chapt 11, I know of 36 trucks that are owned privately that are just parked since it cost more to run the truck then what is made by driving it. Companies are turning the speeds of thier trucks back meaning longer transit times for frieght, more chance of earlier spoilage, and higher prices. Your going to feel it alot more too for planting seasons ect all depend of diesel fuel so farmers are either going to have to cut back productions or stop all together unless they can mget it back through price increases. simple solution is if the farmer is paying .20 more per gallon, the shipper is paying .20 more per gallon, the local trucks are paying .20 more per gallon then .60 is needed right off to create an offset to stay level. Its far more complicated than that and at the same time there is the corporate mind that says lets make a little more profit from this and blame the other issues for the price increases. Example, oil prices went up $1.30 per barrel (30 gallon barrel is a .043 price increase per gallon) Oil companies that sell gas jumped prices on average .20 per gallon to cover that increase. If oil companies jumped an increase of 450% to cover that .043 increase to equal .20 then what is going to happen to other corporations. Could and would the farmer increase his cost in that area to a .90 of the .20 increase) then the trucking company add to this (.90 times 450% to be 4.05) then the store add it one more time (4.05 times 450% to be 16.40)
No... NO. This is what gives protesters a bad name. If we protest this bullshit, no one will take us seriously. Learn to use spell check, by the way. There needs to be a huge march on Washington D.C., with regular people, who have felt the crunch of rising gas prices. People who have to decide whether to buy the full tank of gas, or the full cart of groceries. The trucker who has to buy gas, and pay his truck payments. The optimistic college student who commutes to campus everyday. Real people, with real problems. Putting a face of suffering and hopelessness on the protest will win the government over. Remember, we NEED gas and oil, because of the way our country is built. We have an addiction, and we can't go cold turkey because that's bad economics. $11.7 billion... That is the fourth quarter earnings of Exxon Mobil. How is that possible, when Average Americans (Canadians, Europeans, etc.) are suffering? Tell me how is that possible? Both Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama have proposed conducting an investigation, but this should be done NOW, rather than while they are president. Protesting about what flmkpr said will just make the protests seem like they consist of a bunch of bored liberal college students, and America is turned off by that.
if i'm the oil country, i'll make the price goo and gooo up. i'll tell my oil country's companion to do same. i'll drive the price to go up and never go down. that's what economic will do for sure. for what reason oil country so sociable or so kindly to make price go down? are they sociable enough to give away some of their surplus to poor country? haha, never, only in your dream. disgusting? coldhearted? make sure yourself you willn't do like that if you are on the TOP. there isn't any fair or justice if you deal with economic situation, business or human greed.
ya'll are pretty thorough, I can't contribute anything except Al Gore's house runs on clean power. He has a high power bill because clean energy costs more and many energy companies offer a carbon-neutral power alternative. It isn't trendy because it's expensive. that's not to say al gore is perfect; it's a bit inconsistent with his philosophies to live in a huge house. I know this thread isn't for debating global warming, and I don't want to; I just hope that your reasons for rejecting it don't include gore's hypocrisy or any flaws with him. If it's a fact, then gore would just be the messenger. this link is for the company that provides gore's power http://www.nespower.com/green_power_switch.aspx
You see, this is the problem. Going "Green" as some people say, is very expensive. Though, it may pay off in the long run, such as solar panels actually contributing to your surrounding power grid, it is still a very expensive investment that most people can't afford. Ethanol has also created problems, mainly in the grain industry. Corn prices have soared world wide, and, especially in Mexico, where corn is a STAPLE in the average Mexican's diet, this is a huge problem. Let's not forget that Ethanol is still burned, creating the same greenhouse gases which Gasoline creates. My HOPE, is that Hydrogen Fuel Cells gain more recognition. It uses ION EXCHANGE, rather than combustion, and the byproduct is WATER. It seems most promising, and I hope it gains a place in today's energy market. This energy problem is going to take many decades. Not just converting to the Oil and Natural Gas replacement, but researching the technology so it can be safe and usable is going to take all of the World's great minds. Yes, they are working on it now, but the R&D of Alternative energy is still in it's infancy.
Ethanol, if I may mention, is also less efficient than gasoline. You're also paying a ridiculous amount for it. Plus, what makes that ethanol? For those of you who might not know how ethanol is made, it's just like making whiskey. You take a mash of malted grain, ferment, and distill the alcohol. Why am I bitching about this, you ask? Have you any idea how much electricity it takes to make pure ethanol? Where does electricity come from? Hydro, wind generators, and coal. Yes, coal. So, you're putting out just as big a carbon footprint. That's not what worries me though... You might be wondering "Why isn't he bitching about people making booze if it's such a problem?" Well, whiskey distilleries, even the biggest ones, are much smaller than fuel ethanol plants. They use much less energy, and instead of burning what they make and making more carbon, you drink it. Plus, fuel ethanol takes a HUGE amount of water to make. The end product won't exactly kill you if you drink it, but I wouldn't go around drinking a gallon of tails just for kicks. Basically, the government picked a poor fuel alternative in ethanol. As corn prices go up, the cost of raising livestock goes up. More cost to the consumer on top of rising fuel prices. Not only that, more and more farmers are forgetting all about the wonderful idea of rotating crops to keep soil fertile and nutrient-rich, just so that they can make a quick buck. Then, the market floods with corn, and due to supply/demand, the prices plummet for a while, and the farmer loses. I'm not worried about global warming. I don't believe it, and I have my reasons. One of those being this: How is the planet getting hotter when some of the damn blazing hottest places in the U.S. have seen record lows? My sister lives in Florida. She called me one day during the winter and said "It's snowing." Her boyfriend has lived there for years, and only saw snow during several years of living in Florida when he came up here. Huge snowstorms, incredible cold... Here's a thought. Scientists tell us that the earth used to be much warmer, then there was an ice age. If global warming is a reality, it might just be the earth going through another warm phase. It has indeed happened before in history. That does make you wonder though, if we're in a warm phase and it's beginning to peak, what happens when it turns cold again? It's possible though. Tomorrow I begin hanging signs (or as soon as I can walk again. Had a small oops, and I'm walking with a crutch to assist my left leg) Al Gore could do a much better job of championing his cause if he didn't come off as wacky as he does. Plus, the man is old, he's pruny, he ain't pretty. The epitome of wacky is somebody his age, who looks like he does, stating that they're "bringing sexy back", even jokingly in a speech. If that's sexy, then there must be a bunch of words to describe hotness that we don't know yet, because it has to be better than that. As stated in a previous post, don't make yourselves look like a bunch of liberal college students if you take up this cause. Whoever said that (can't look now, in a time crunch) has a good point. America doesn't care about liberal college students anymore. I hate to say this, but... If you want to get attention, be respectable, look smart, have your facts straight, and be ready to look better than, and outwit, the man. I might see if I can anonymously organize a protest somewhere. I love spreading this message and rallying people to the cause of lower fuel prices, but I'd rather not be spreading the message from behind bars. Also, I'm a car guy. I like cars. I admit it, I like gas-guzzling 400+ Horsepower speed machines, and I only drive cars with a manual transmission. If they can develop an alternative fuel source that can keep that power, that sound, that unique feel, and still give me my standardshift, I'll be happy with it. If not, driving will be a boring, unsafe activity. I get so bored driving an automatic that I've actually nodded off behind the wheel of one. Never in my five speed. Always focused. The car guy side of me wants the performance manual transmission (no automatic, no DSG, no tiptronic, nuh-uh) and the power, and good fuel economy as well, all packed into an alternative fuel car. If gas prices keep going up and emissions laws get tighter, the age of the muscle car will truly be forever finished. I don't want that to happen. Plus, if they can get hydrogen working and make a similar engine to use with it, we can still get all the power, etc. and emissions won't mean a damn thing. It's water!
Pennyroyal Tea, When are you plnning to do this gas protest. You should have a strike for 1-2 days. Everyone should do it the same day. Let me know. Thanks, Cat
I was planning covert poster hangings and stuffing leaflets in mailboxes at night as the first phase. I hadn't gotten around to it, but I intend to start tomorrow evening if I'm granted the wisdom to design a proper posted by then. Now I'm even more eager. I was channel surfing the other day, and when I hit Fox News, I stopped to listen to a report about truckers and common folk converging on D.C. to protest the rape of our economy that the oil barons are getting away with. I simply said out loud "Right on, my brothers. Right on." As far as posters, I'm beginning that tomorrow night I hope. Now, a physical protest, I don't know. Let's discuss. I may bloody hate myspace and facebook (facebook less than myspace, since I actually need it to keep in contact with a couple people) but I'll start a group on both of them if we can set a concrete date for a protest.
Yes and let's just pretend that it's not affecting the rest of the economy. Thank you so very much for being supportive. Let's just tolerate being robbed by big business and our corporate puppet government. Let's obediently react only to what the corporate puppet media tells us to. Let's stand obediently attentive while Congressional time and resource is wasted attending to the "steroids in Sports" distraction and express our indignation at this and enable the cover that helps the establishment gouge the working poor so their CEO and stockholder cronies can rake in obscene profits. Let's just sit idly by while criminal Bush lies to us year after year after year about wanting to break our "addiction to oil" at a time when energy policy is being railroaded through that perpetuates it. Our government is functioning as a criminal organization domestically and globally but let's just ride our horse and believe that it's the answer. Policy writers, those who gave the approval, and the corporate influences that bought not only policy but policy direction for the foreseeable future should face charges for not only the war crimes they planned, approved, and executed but also for economic policies that are larcenous on an unprecedented scale. As big an issue as Oil is, it's status as a tool of embezzling a standard of living from the middle class to the elite is just a small part of the big picture.
read the title. it says "I hate it too but i just feel like being a bitch" actually it says to, cause i spelled it wrong.
Pennyroyal_Tea, Let me know when you state up your myspace account for the gas protest. I was talking to my husband and we will get things going on down here in Mo. But we all need to work together so we can get things done. We need to set a date and let everyone know so they can participate and something can get done. Cat
I'll try to get things going soon, but my internet access is sparse... I got busted for possession and substance abuse... My parents... The LEOs cited me for disorderly conduct. They came in with weapons drawn because I was armed, but I tossed my pocket knife away, got cuffed (still have bruises) but they let me off easy. They were contemplating taking me off to the tank for the night. See, not all cops are bad. The city cops in my hometown are corrupt as hell, but the sherrif's deputies aren't all bad. They were nice, 'cept they didn't get the damned cuffs off me in time to prevent some nasty bruising. I'm gonna pay the fine and be done with it. As soon as I can get something up on myspace and facebook, I'll post them up back here, and we can organize something. I'd like to see how many people we can get to follow this cause. I'd also like to avoid arrests if at all possible.
