Who said that naturals are "superior" to backcombed locks? It is completely possible to get a job with natural locks. I wouldn't want to work for somebody anyways who judged me based on my hair, rather than my personality or work performance. And it is NOT all about looks either. I feel that a lot of people just view dreadlocks as just a hairstyle, but they are much more than that. Dreads grow from within you, and it makes you realize a lot of things about yourself. It is about being honest with yourself, it is a constant reminder of who you really are. A lot of people get all defensive when I say that I don't agree with backcombing. It's as if your forcing your hair into locks...I'm saying just let it go and let nature take care of it, you know? I don't look down on people who backcombed though, I have no right to judge. I am a person just like you and in the end, it's just hair.
''Who said that naturals are "superior" to backcombed locks?'' dont remember but someone on this thread, and several others state it like some kinda fact that naturals look better etc. kinda pisses me off. but whatever
I selected both, because I very loosely backcombed them to the approximate thickness that I wanted them to be, and then I kind of just let them do their own thing from that point forward. I have used the comb a couple times to tidy them up, but that's about it for that.
Ya people have talked mad, to me at my school for backcombing my hair to start them. I think it's pretty funny. How those who claim to be about peace, turn and discriminate about some hair. Like there is nothing else for them to think about but the fact I want dreads lol.
its been 2 months of neglect and my hair isnt doing much, if i backcombed again will it reverse the progress?
i clciked backcomb, but in thery i did both. The person who did mine fucked up and magaed to screw my hair up, so i undid loads and did it myself through backcomb and left alone. dreads are grrrreat
Are you saying that I contradict myself? You gotta look at it on different levels. check it out...when I say that dreads are more than a hairstyle, I mean that they shouldn't be worn just to look good, as a lot of other hairstyle are. It's not about looks. My dreads are part of me, who I am. It's hard to describe the spiritual aspect behind it. but if you look at it on a bigger level, no material things really matter. It doesn't matter what your hair looks like, what clothes you wear, if you're ugly or beautiful, or if you have black/white/yellow/brown skin. These are all things that distort people's views of one another. We get caught up with racial differences, or language barriers, but that stuff doesn't matter. We are all HUMANS, and in that aspect, we are all the same. You feel me?
I understand what you are saying friend, Liquid. But I find it hard to swallow. Unless you have one giant nappy ball of dread, then you don't live by what you preach. Now you very well may be legit, and if so, I commend you. Very few people are truly able to let go of vanity. The ripping of dreads isn't 100% "natural" imo. You are pulling your hair away from what it wants to do naturally. If you truly care nothing of your appearance, you will leave it alone, no? Ripping dreads would shape them into something more socially acceptable (as much of a negative stigma dreads have, there is a certain way they are "expected" to look by the masses), or even just among the dreadlock community. One giant dread seems to be looked down apon even here. I know this may sound like a personal attack, but I don't intend it to be. You are a nice person and I enjoy your company here. I just don't understand how backcombing is usually viewed as being less legit because you are "taking control" or "forcing" your hair to do something- when ripping hair apart is essentially the same thing. "Forcing" your hair to do something. Aren’t we basically styling our hair in a particular fashion when we do this ripping? I agree with you on this. But in the end, who are we to judge? Is it possible for someone to feel their dreads are a part of them along with the spiritual aspects of it- BUT still enjoy their appearance with dreadlocks and maintain that? I bet most people here fall into this category. Aye!! Well said. No hard feelings brother, may we agre to disagree on some matters
Tell me about it. I'm simply pointing out how people who are agaisnt backcombed locks need to get off their high horse and stop acusing others of things. Dread elitists like you said there.
Both here, I backcombed most. but I had an angled bob and the back is really short so backcombing would not have stayed in. So I am just letting the back go to do it's own thang. And as far as "natural is better" who cares what everyone else says, it's your journey and your hair, do what is good for you. Each way has it's pros and cons for everyone.
When I do my dreads (if all works out) I will definitely be BACKCOMBING and even sectioning my hair off before I do. I have no choice, because I have cochlear implants for both ears and I have to wear this really annoying outer equipment that involves stuff hanging on my ear and a magnet on both sides sticking on my head above and behind my ear, with a wire between the two. So, I will have to section and backcomb my dreads to make sure that the base of the dreads doesn't get in the way of where the outer equipment goes. In other words, I have to make sure that the "crossroads" of sectioning falls on where the magnet goes, so there's not so much hair the magnet can't stick to my head properly. I hate to think there are so many people out there that will look down on me because I have chosen to backcomb and have planned dreads. I am sure I am not the only one that will have these kinds of dreads for reasons other than appearance.
i wouldnt look down on ya and like i said in the other thread youd maybe be best keepin that area trimmed even
i did mine backcomb (or actually a friend of me did it ) i think everyone should do it the way it feels right for themselves. and for me that is backcomb!
