I can only say what I know...I'm not sure about rice though I'm sure it has gone up. I live in the dairy state and I can't believe how much milk, cheese, eggs etc., have gone up. IT's crazy ridiculous. I doubt it will get better and I'm sure it will get a lot worse. I make less than $7 an hour and getting fewer hours...I don't know what will happen. Positive thinking....

In '94, the dumpsters in Jackson were really kind. The grocery store mannagers wanted nothing but the freshest prouduce on sale for the rich tourists and summer people. The folks that can afford a summer place in the mountains above Jackson aren't the ones affected by the current problems. It'll be interesting to see if that vein is srill producinfg the mother lode. Also, in '94, I noticed a good number of unemployed oilfield workers around Big Piney. I haven't looked at detailed ecconomic data for Wyoming lately, or, well, ever, but I bet those oilfield workers have all the hours they can handle now.

I am disturbed by the thought of a bunch of kids heading toward Laramie, and Boulder, and whatever other towns rumour says are hippie friendly,
to live off soup lines and food banks while they wait on word of a "holding camp" where they will sit and feed themselves off food banks and panhandling till the Gathering gets going. These knuckleheads will not only be taking from the local community, they will be taking from the poorest members of the local comunity. Great pre-Gathering PR.

I have the same concern...people really should start realize that 'we' don't help a community when folks come in, hit the food banks & apply for food stamps; it takes away from already limited community resources. Kitchens who head Home early should bring enough food last at leat thru solstice, IMO; and folks who come early to scout should come prepared to cover their expenses. I kinda think its a crock when folks head to the Gathering early with the intention of having others cover their food & other expenses.

In Boulder we have had the rainbows for years after and before gatherings. My biggest rant and everyone I know is The. Garbage..

A lot of folks comes up to the mountains make a camp and calls it “Rainbow” and leave garbage all over and leave, year after year I go talk to them and they all say
“This is a rainbow gathering people come by and clean up the garbage afterwards”

Then I watch them all leave and the garbage is still there and the locals have to clean it up and a lot of them aren’t Rainbows.
And bagging up garbage and putting next to a 2-lane hwy for dogs to rip apart is not cleaning up garbage.

There is a belief that there are mystical rainbow creatures that come by after every gathering and make the garbage disappear. It is a myth.
People in the mountains here call the rainbows “The people who leave garbage in the woods’

I have been to my fair share of gatherings and know what it is about and know that most good rainbows try to leave no trace except spend money in the local communities but man some of these kids fly the Rainbow flag and make a big mess and all the bad press gets blamed on the family, and some of these kids are like 30 or 40 years old.

I used to do a lot of clean up I guess I was one of those mystical imaginary creatures that make garbage disappear after every “Rainbow” event, I don’t have time to clean up after hippies these days I have kids that I would rather go on a picnic with instead of cleaning up after a bunch of 30-40 year old hippies.

    End of rainbow garbage rant:)

Road runner...it is easier for me to identify the comment you're refering to if you hit the 'quote' button below the post...that will copy my post & give you a place to write your comment or question. A HipForums supporter is what I was talking about.

You're a worker bro & we love you for it!

    http://thesietch.org/mysietch/greenspree/2007/07/17/self-sufficiency/

at your age you should know not to speak of what your not familiar with,,living in the country does not make you a expert on sustainable living.. ;)

theres a big damn difference in what kinda farming im sure your used to in all your years "livin in the country" and the kind of farming a well educated(on the subject),conservation minded, self sustaining,"hippie" type family does..
perhaps youll learn somethin from the links i provided..

it not only CAN be done,,it is BEING DONE. 80% OF A FAMILY OF FOURS FOOD ON A TENTH OF A ACRE!!!

a quarter acre is more than ample to feed a family of four..

if you would like,i can provide plenty of links to get you on your way to doing the same for yourself...

    have a great day..

Even with all the concern over rising food and fuel prices, I am quite confident that there will be enough food to go around at rainbow this year.

    Peace :)
