Well at the risk of being labeled a Nazi, I'm going to say that I think the initial post is absolute guff. Even if you ignore the health risks, and even if you're dumb enough to think passive smoking is a fairy story, so what?

I get the parallel that you're trying to draw with alcohol, but the fact is, if someone has a glass of wine in a restaurant, no big deal. If someone smokes a cigarette, it is a big deal, just like them taking a dump in there would be a big deal. More to the point, plenty of people use alcohol without ill effects. Yes there are alcoholics who create anti-social side-effects, but the same is true of smokers; again, ignoring the apparently crazy notion of passing smoking, when someone's on 60 a day, they stink, they hack, they cough, they wheeze... it's gross, you know? And being around someone who hasn't had a fag in... ooh, what... three hours? THE MOST FUN IN THE WORLD! Serial smokers, deprived of fags for whatever reason, go from being the "relaxed" people they are when they're exerting their freedom to enjoy themselves to something akin to a couple of five year olds in the back of a family saloon repeating "are we nearly there yet?" "are we nearly there yet?" "dad, are we nearly there yet?!" over and over. Guh, whatever.

I don't see it as at all unreasonable for someone to be asked to extinguish a cigarette in public if the smell is not appreciated. Most smokers don't even realise how much cigarettes stink, but they really do. Since the ban in bars, I've been amazed to find that, would you believe, I can go to a pub in a pair of jeans, come home and - seriously, I was agog - wear them the next day! IN PUBLIC! WITHOUT SPRAYING THEM WITH THREE CANS OF GLADE!

So yeah, in summary: if you're dumb enough not to give a shit about your health, big deal. I don't care if you die really, and you're more than paying for your palliative care in tobacco duty anyway. But don't act like a victim just because people are finally thinking "wait a minute... these things are fucking retarded". There's no reason why anyone should have to put up with the smell of cigarette smoke in a public place just because you happen to be hooked on the nicotine.

Actually I'm all for smokers (of tobacco's) right and all that stuff... I live in PA and they're once AGAIN trying to get that smoking ban that most other states now have to go through.... and the reason I support smoker's (of tobaccos) rights is because I know I should be able to smoke what I wanna smoke or roll or trip if I wanna.... so anyways... yeah... I totally agree with you....

I was just saying out of tobacco, the ganja and alcohol the only one that is ILLEGAL is the least harmful for you and that if I had to chose between mj being legal and the other two being illegal or keeping things the way it is, I'd switch. I'm tired and have a cold and don't even know if I'm making sense anymore...

But yeah, I also agree with Self Control... even though I don't think tobacco should be ILLEGAL... I do think non-smokers have a right to not have other people's cigarette smoke in their faces in public. I think it's fine if a restaurant owner wants to have a smoking room as well as the place is well ventilated and all that but I seriously don't want other people's cigarette smoke in my face. What they do in their own car, in their own house or walking down the street, etc... AWAY from me is fine.

I can understand your point of view, and I respect your opinion and input.

But you are making an unfair assumption of smokers everywhere. I smoke 3-4 ciggarettes a day. Thats pretty much it. Your argument based on the 60 year old man is based on chemical addictions. The same could be used for alchohol That is like giving that same example, but with a 60 year old alchoholic who needs his beers, and reasoning that this is enough of a reason for everyone to stop drinking.

He said 60 cigarettes or three packs a day. ;)

Which may be a bit (or a lot) extreme for most smokers... but it's probably closer than 3-4 cigarettes a day (not what most people smoke)... I'd say most smoke between one and two packs a day.

Anyways if you only smoke 3-4 cigarettes a day you should have no problem not smoking them in public places.

I understand most of what you have to say, and it is great input to the forum :)

But it's not that I dont have a problem not smoking in public, it's that its my right to.

    Well thanks ;)

Sure, smoke where you want... all I'm saying is that if you are in public and the smoke is bugging a non-smoker somewhere... like going in their face.. .they should have a right to not have your smoke go in their face.

They have the right to move. Especially if I was standing there first.

The way I see it is this: I go out of my way to NOT stand by non smokers. If you see me smoking and stand where you see the smoke blowing.... well then take your second hand cancer and shut the fuck up. Now if I light up next to you and it bothers you, feel free to ask me to move.

I totally agree with the OP.

I get really annoyed with how whiney everyone in our society is becoming. "Waaah!! Smoke!!" "Waahhh, there's pesticides in my mattress!!" "Waaaaah, waaahh, I slipped in your store and now I'm gonna sue!" "Waahh!! My kid's not bad he's just got ADD!!"

Now, I admit I'm one of those rare non-smokers that actually LOVES the smell of cigarette smoke. I don't know why, I just always have. I don't expect everyone else to like it, but I hate it when people compare second-hand smoke from walking past a person, or being exposed for 5 whole minutes, to the type of second hand smoke which was actually used in the studies saying it was bad for you. It causes health problems when you LIVE WITH a smoker, not from eating next to one. Let's not pretend they're the same conditions. Your body's not that much of a pansy that it's going to lose a lung from a few particles of tar. But hey, if your that worried about pollutants, why don't you lobby congress to ban cars?---Skyline's don't turn brown because of tobacco smoke, you know.

It's part of this whole "mommying" culture, where not only is our government totally overstepping its boundary by trying to be everybody's mom, but now, every citizen has to be everyone else's mom too! It's "be your brother's keeper" not "be your child's keeper."

In fact, this has inspired me to make a thread of my own....

i think people are dumb. really dumb. so i like to think of it as a sort of natural selection (even though i know that doesn't exist with humans anymore).

if you're dumb enough to voluntarily breathe in toxic chemicals (take shitloads of drugs/alcohol blah blah etc) then cool. you can die faster. im not one to tell people what they should do or not do. i wouldn't wanna interfere with their personal tumor growing business. when im a doctor they'll be paying me to remove that shit and ill be flying around in first class.

    peace out.

I think public smoking bans are bullshit because it should be up to the owner of a business whether or not they allow smoking. What happens when public smoking's banned? You gonna ban private smoking, too? Or public consumption of caffeine?
