I planning on growing some shrooms(B+ strain) for the first time. I have 4 ounce jars. Is this too small for decent shrooms to grow? I was thinking that the smaller the jar, the less time it would take for full colonization. Any recommendations for a first timer?
you cant have a too small jar, it needs to be big enough for two differnt mycillem colonies to grow and meet. with a jar that small inocuate in two differnt places as far away as possible and dont put in two many spores. as to the amount of fruiting, two half sized jars will fruit the same amount as one full sized jar. make sure to kepp sterile and good luck!
It's not "to small" per say, but I recommend you buy a 24 pack of tapered mason jars from a superstore.
250ml- most will say "Half Pint" on them, I also recommend you don't get textured ones, because it's hard to see through.
and they should not be tapered as RylyC said, they should be wide mouth so you can slide the cake out once it is fully colonized
How much light should the shrooms get. I read somewhere that a few hours a day is all they need. I bought a battery powered touch light(rechargeable), would this work well?
The jars don't need any light while they are colonizing. When they are ready to fruit, that is when you expose them to light. And yes the touch light will work. Check out fungifun.org thats where I pretty much found all my info for growing. A guy on there named anno can pretty much answer any question you will ever have about growing mushrooms. Oh yeah tapered means that the jars get smaller at the top, you don't want that, you want wide mouth.
Almost any jars will work, depending on the grain you plan on using. If it's gonna be BFR/ vermiculite, just make sure that they're wide-mouth, otherwise the cakes won't slide out like they should.
no, any jar will Not "work". you need a "wide mouth" jar so you can get the Cake out.. a regular jam jar, you would have to break it to get the cake out, and with that, you have a good chance of ruining your cake. you can also buy plastic cups that have a lid and wide mouth.
Uh huh, but some people don't use cakes. Notice I said "depending on your grain." If you're using rye berries, millet, WBS, corn, basically anything but BRF/verm, tapered jars are just fine.
well, no hard feelings i just said that, because the guy who started the thread is a newb at this, so chances are he will be starting off with the main newb method.. PF tek with BRF and Verm - to FC with perlite on bottom, dont get me wrong, its actually great proven method. but i consider casings better
I really wouldn't suggest anything except for Mason or jelly jars. Picnic cups can't be pressure cooked or pasteurized.
You can steam them, which is what I do. I can't find wide mouth glass jars here in town so that's why I asked.
Those may work for now, but I would suggest going out in the fall & getting Mason jars. They're usually stocked in grocery stores around September or so.
yep, mason jars are def. a seasonal thing. you can usually find them before sept. im sure! i found tons the first week it was like 80 over here, saw them in wal-mart, and all the major food stores in my area. but some1 just today i was talking with couldnt find them in wal-mart in her area. nothing else works as good unless you order PF jars from specialty sites, ones that can withstand boiling temp's.
