Hey guys, im getting my hair dreaded next month and to pass the time ive been looking at pictures and stuff of dread veterans. And im really tempted to colour mine sometime after i get them. I have naturally jet black hair already and was thinking of putting a few colours in there. Was just wondering how some of you guys have done it, how easy it was, how well it turned out, and what you used. Also should i wait for a while after the dreading process before it do it? Cant wait.
I don't have dreads yet, but a little bit of logic goes a long way. I would HIGHLY recommend you lighten(bleach, or natural lightening methods) the hair to your desired tone BEFORE you get the dreads. A) the little bit of damage done to the hair will only help tighten them B) if you go putting bleach in dreads you have to be CERTAIN that it is completely rinsed out(and rinsed out, and rinsed out). it will do terrible things to the inside of a dread if you let those chemicals sit in there . Beyond that, the veteran colored folk will be able to add more, I'm sure. Much luck to your new babies!
heard ppl who colored theyre dreads complain that ther dies and crap never fully rinced out and left behind a mess if ya gotta dye then dye b4 u dread and polease explain what exactly ya mean by your getting your hair dreaded next month? what were ya plannin on doin to "get" them dreaded?
you can dye them after you have your hair locked...but i would really bleach them before they are locked up. It's hard to get bleach out of dreads completely...you can do it, but i would suggest bleaching it first. AND if you bleach your hair, it will most likely be a little more nappy...which will help the dreading process good luck with your new locks
A friend with dreads is doing it by backcombing, and using KnottyBoy products i think. - Hmm. but how would i go about dying like single dreads? Like for example, keeping my hair black, and then having a few dreads hightlighted red. Im gonna read up more into it in the future. But was just wondering if anyone had any tips or techniques to go about it
i dyed the tips of mine red about a year and a half after i first had my dreads done. i hear a lot of people say not to use the conditioner that usually comes with the dye(obviously)....but i found some dye at a Hot Topic that is just natural color, with no conditioner necessary, and isn't made with ammonia and other crazy chemicals(still has chemicals..but a LOT less) it looked awesome and stayed bright red for quite a while. the tips are still off colored compared to the rest of the dreads, so it was good dye. can't remember the name of it tho. it wasn't in a box or anything, just a plastic red bottle.
READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE BEFORE DOING ANYTHING! YOU CANNOT DO THIS PROCEDURE IF YOU HAVE WAX ON YOUR HAIR. PERIOD. You shouldnt be using wax at all for any reason anyway. To color the dreads, I recommend letting them alone for at least 3 months after the backcombing before you do anything color wise. Your hair needs to lock up tight, and using chemicals will not help this. it may even undo the hard work you put into it. 2 steps- for "crazy color" dreads, not "natural" color changes. this is for a big bold look. go to the beauty supply. do not ask anyone for help. you have a list. buy whats on the list. people at beauty supplies usually dont get it, esp locks. 2 packages Powdered White Bleach. It will be near hairdye. Then you need an entire tall bottle of peroxide, that will be creamy white, NOT CLEAR. The number on the side should say 20 Volume. Do NOT buy the higher number. The higher the number, the higher the damage. You dont want to damage the lock. A PLASTIC bowl and a tint brush and 3 pair of gloves.(yes, 3) Now buy the Special Effects. Do not buy anything but Special Effects. I can get this at the beauty supply- you may have to get it at hot topic. This is the crazy color your dreads are going to end up. Buy this and then go to the supermarket. At the supermarket, buy sandwich bags and paperclips. Dont get the thick ziplock ones. get the cheezy cheap bags, small ones. go home. step one. separate locks you want colored. decide how much you want colored- whole lock? just the end? put the locks you are not going to color in a band away from your face. put all your stuff in front of you. open the sandwich bags and paperclips. put the entire contents of one envelope of the powdered bleach in the PLASTIC BOWL. then pour some creamy white number 20 in the bowl. DO IT SLOWLY. Mix with the TINT BRUSH. you need the mixture to be like thick cake batter. when it is goopy but not drippy put on the gloves. Use the tint brush to apply the mixture to the lock. Dont get this on the root. Go up to the root, or just the end, or whatever. Just dont put it directly on the root. After you cover the lock with the white stuff, put it in a sandwich bag so it wont get on your face or other hair/locks on your head. Use a paper clip to secure the bag around the lock. so keep doing this until you are done painting the locks you want colored. Leave the bags on your head for a half hour. if its sunny, go outside, it will go faster. when you can see the hair color changed in the bag, take one bag off and look at the lock. is it yellow? if it isnt yellow, it isnt light enough. IF THE LOCK SEEMS RUBBERY, OR GOOEY, ABORT MISSION ASAP. Rinse it out. Still in good shape but not yellow yet? keep the bags on longer. dont get stoned and forget about the bags, you gotta stay sharp. I say this from experience. if your hair goes lighter than yellow, you are good as gold too. when the the locks turn yellow, wash the stuff out. AND WASH IT GOOD. you dont want anything left on your head thats white. wash wash wash. you should be using the proper shampoo, not soapy crap. when you are done washing, look at the overall head. is this where you wanted the colored parts? everything you see thats light will be crazy color. put the crazy color in the newly washed PLASTIC BOWL. put on new gloves. use tint brush to put crazy color on LIGHT PART OF LOCK. put a sandwich bag on it. put a paper clip on it. this stuff is not chemically reactive, its just going to soak into the light part of your dread and color it. dont get this shit everywhere- it stains everything. no matter what color, it stains. landlords and moms hate this shit. leave the bags for no less than 30 minutes, you can leave them one for a long time if you want. it doesnt matter. when ready to wash, put on third pair of gloves. pull bags off and wash. wash wash wash. when done, blot locks with a towel you can throw away. blot blot. if you followed the directions, your hair should be perfect. if you have any questions, my email is kikioreekee@sbcglobal.net and i will answer them. and yes, i do hair. DO NOT PUT BLEACH MIXTURE ON WET HAIR. DO NOT USE METAL UTENSILS WHEN USING BLEACH. good luck!
Well ive colored my dreads twice. First time i dyed them in black, the second in red and all was cool. the shit is that after i washed my hair the second time most of the paint fell off
I dyed my dreads twice now, and I've had no real issue with it... immediately after dying, they are fairly dry and brittle, because you cannot condition them. It is also somewhat of a bitch to rinse all the dye out, and it is fairly time consuming, as well as it takes about 2-3 times more dye than it would for normal hair. It is a little more difficult to get a thorough, even dye job on dreads... you really have to concentrate on each lock... I did, anyway. But overall, I would say that dying them somewhat helped to lock them up... I just wouldn't go to overboard with it.
