Well, I decided to wash my hair tonight, and there are still knotty parts, but quite a bit came out. Here are some pics of my week so far. (hope these pics work!)

    first is fresh backcombing

Then I hopped in the shower with some Dr. Bronner's Citrus (mostly to get out the bit of lock peppa and the massive amount of lock accelerator that dried out my scalp.)

There are still knots, but not enough to warrant the hours of backcombings put into them.

On the whole it is a lot more knotty than usual, and will get more so as I wash twice a week and spray with the awesome organic lemon and sea salt mix I made after dumping out the lock accelerator.

LMK if you have any good tips. At this point I am sewing up some nice headwraps and letting it do as it feels.

Also, how much do you dilute your Dr. Bronner's? I did 8 oz soap to 24 oz water. Maybe it will be more knotty if I dilute or rinse more?

looks like a good start :)
try not to wash them too frequently at this stage, your dreads are still forming like little babies and great to hear that you ditched the dread products, that stuff is a waist of money......nad horay for dr bronners....i gotta get me some of that

well I think your hair may have been a little too short for backcombing... so just wait what happens ;)

I think most of it was probably too short, too. The longer stuff on top actually held together, but the back and lower sides not so much.

I was worried about washing last night, but I had the mantra "dirty hair doesn't dread" in my head and thought I would go for it and clean it up. Would you recommend once a week, or even less?

looks a lot better now you've washed it. mm... don't put your hair on a schedule, but wash it when it gets greasy. of course if you wash say every day, then your scalp has grown dependent on the washing and you should "ween" it. but once a week is fine, that's what I do, it just depends on your scalp. can I ask how long your hair was before back combing?

anyway it looks like a great start, and the dr bronners will help :) peace!

That was just about the length my hair was at when I noticed knots forming. But I also never used a comb for the hair, since I was shaving my head before while I was visiting the monestary. Now my hair is about 1"-1.5" longer than yours and my head is full of dreads. I wash my hair probably 3 times a week maybe more. I wash with Bronners Almond and Tea tree and throw on a hat. When it was your length i'd noticed knots then I would noticed them gone after a good head scrubbin, but eventually I noticed knots that would actually catch my finger while watching and hurt my head. So don't worry about the pre-knots they'll come and go but the ones that like it there will be with you til you evict them. Cheers
