I do like my tattoos, but others seem hesitant to show off their ink. I can't figure it out. I don't ask people anymore to see their tattoos now because I feel like they think I am intruding. I always like to see other peoples tattoos. I like people to look at mine too. It's a very cool artform really. Some people don't mind though; my talking a look. I love the sharing part of it. It's something to be proud of; having a tattoo.
I feel the exact same way..I love to look at tattoos, mine or someone elses. It is an art form, it should be shown no matter how society feels about it.
I don't have tatoos's but I do have alot of hair. some may not understand why we grew our hair long back in the 60's and I believed then it was expression of freedom...and tatoo's must be that and more...as you say, art. I like to look at them too. Maybe someday I will go under the needle for a body enhancement artistic expression. If I did it I like the look when an entire arm or leg is very colorful, flowing, and vivid.
i love to show off my tats! part of why i hate winter... i have to cover up all my beautiful ink! i'm working on a new design too... so, i'm excited about that! and since i love to show them off... here they are!!
it's got a lot of meaning to me. first, it represents the 4 elements. the circle on top is the sun, or fire. the middle band that has waves is water, and the flat line is the earth symbol. air is simply the space between and around. secondly, it represents some very special people to me... the mentally retarded clients i used to work with... and their astrological signs, which all fit into those 4 elements perfectly. plus stylistically and colorwise, it is like the blue woad that the ancient celts used for spiritual symbolism, and since i've got some of the blood running in me, it means a lot. plus it just looks totally badass!
It really does Nakedtreehugger, Love the blue. I don't have any tats,,but they are gorgeous, and I'd imagine if I loved an image enough to get it permanently on my bod I would want to show it off as well.
I don't mind showing/discussing my ink to respectful people. I am just as curious about other peoples' work as some are about mine. For the most part, though, I try to keep my tattoos covered simply because the sun is bad for them. Although I am proud of my artwork, I don't feel a need to prominently display it. Doing so isn't wrong, just not something I do. My only problem is that some people have this impression that tattoos make your body "public space." For example, if I'm wearing a collarless shirt, it is apparent that I have a big back piece. I have had 2 women, without my permission, lift my shirt to see the whole piece. This happened once in line at the bank and once at an open air market. This is disrespectful and intruding, IMHO.
Wow... really? That is SO rude and disrespectful, I would freak if someone did that to me. I don't mind whatsoever showing off my ink, in fact I get really excited when someone asks to see. Even though I do get my tattoos for me, I still like to share. But I have experienced the same reluctance when asking to see other's tattoos as well. I think maybe because some people get them in spots that they don't want others seeing? Or parts of their body they're uncomfortable with for some reason. Who knows.
jesus! how rude... i can't believe people would actually lift up your shirt to look, without asking first! a lot of people who ask me, i'll have them pull my strap back a bit cause i can't reach it (for the one on the back of my shoulder), but if someone just pulled off my shoulder strap to see my tat i'd prolly turn around and deck 'em! that just shocks me that people would do that. but yeah, i dunno why some people don't wanna show them off. if it's at least partially visible, i almost always ask about it. if it's not, and we're talking about tats, i'll ask if they have any, or what kinds they have, not "ooh, can i see?" cause then they have the option to show me or not, based on their comfort level. but i LOVE to show off my tats, and all but the two on my lower hips are visible on a daily basis if i'm wearing something sleeveless. which i like a lot! i figure ink is something to show off... but i guess different strokes for different folks.
Beautiful tats nakedtreehugger! I really like the blue with no other colors - it's a nice change. I've got 2 tats, both with just black ink. One is a large dragon on my shoulderblade/back and the other, which I got 2 weeks ago, is my daughter's names in a sun on the back of my neck: I love showing my tats. They represent a part of me, something that is dear to me. My next tattoo will be my husband's name or a symbol that means something to us, and then I want the initials SRV on my inner wrist (Stevie Ray Vaughan, who's music speaks to my soul). *hugs* ~*BA*~
It is maddening and annoying. Both times I turned around with the mind to chew them out, but I realized that it was naivete and immaturity rather than just plain rudeness. They were just SOOOO fascinated they couldn'thelp themselves. Anyway, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Especially when it comes to my non-mainstream interests, I try to give people a positive experience. By this, I mean that I try to be polite, patient, and helpful. I figure that if someone has positive experience with a tattooed person, they are going to be more acceptiing, which benefits thhe wholemod communtiy. Cheers
I have both my hips, the back of my neck and my inner thighs. Every outfit I wear to a club has to show off my thigh tatts, and the back of my neck.I'm always happy to show them off to someone who is genuinely interested.
that's cool that you're as understanding as you are. it is a challenge as a part of the body mod community to deal with a lot of other people's perceptions of us because we're pierced and/or tattooed (just check out the naked earth mama's thread in the erotica forum... this one dude has been so rude to me because i'm modded up). i still think if it were me, i would try to POLITELY say... i'm glad you're interested in my tattoos, and i'd be glad to show them off to you, if you would ask me first before you lift up my shirt. that sets your boundaries and shows that you are just like them, you don't want your shirt ripped off of you, but you're also a nice person and you're not a scary person who'se gonna knife you for looking at them. ah, finding that fine line in dealing with other people... does make life interesting!
I think for most people, they will show you their tattoos if you ask. I hate it when others make such a huge deal about it and try to create a scene. I have my legs tatted and I'll show people if they really want to see it. Then again, I have Japanese art covering my calves and I guess a lot of people don't see that much of it.
i have the sun and moon that spider jerusalem from transmetropolitan has on his shoulders and people always ask me "why is your sun mad?" i like when people ask me about my tattoos but that question...its getting kinda old haha
When mine shows people ask and I answer.. If anyone physically touched me to see or moved my clothing, I'd probably be a little peeved but people are dolts at times...
