Alright, this is a question that I just realized. One of my friend's mothers has chronic severe pain, and takes boatloads of pills to deal with it. Here's the problem, she is taking 10mg of methadone a day, combined with 45 - 60mg's of oxy. Now I know that methadone eliminates euphoric effects of other opiates, but does it affect the pain relief? I ask because she's actually in a lot of pain and it would be terrible if she was taking this medication and it wasn't doing anything. And it's entirely possible that she could have gotten the prescriptions from two different doctors.
you know pole cat thats a great question that I would like to know myself.Wow I have no idea at all. Does it affect the pain killing aspect of the opiate also like its does the euphoric effect " THE HIGH" also ? Sence I have been on methadone I have never really been in real bad pain and never had to take any opiates for pain - Knock on wood !!! But I always wondered that myself like what would happen if I ever was in a horrible car acccidnet or I got burned real bad what the hell would they do for me to kill the pain for me sence the methaodne would just eat the pain killer ????
Methadone works great for pain and won't mess with the Oxys till you take over 50 or 60mgs. 10mgs of Meth. will only add to the pain relief of the Oxys.
If she is taking the methadone for opiate dependance she should consider going up on her dose of methadone and stopping the oxycodone. I have a lot of people with opiate dependence and pain issues and make them choose between our clinic and pain management. Everyone of them was pissed at first, but then said the methadone did a lot more for their pain and they were no longer experiencing the highs from hydro or oxycodone. 10 mg of methadone will most likely not do anything to decrease the euphoria of oxycodone and it def will not block it's pain relieving abilities. 10mg is a REALLY low dose.
Well, I'm pretty sure she's using both drugs for pain relief, so it's good to know that they won't affect each other. But here's the thing, everyday she takes: 60mg oxycontin, 10mg methadone, 60mg adderall, and ??mg valium combined with other medications. I'm wondering if a single doctor would ever prescribe that much shit daily. I know that methadone and benzo's are dangerous combo's.
Yea I don't think she would be geting all of that from the same doc. She's probably getting the methadone from another doctor, and the benzos and oxys from another one. I can't see a doctor prescribing methadone and oxycontin together.
if she is having muscle spasms or anxiety fromt he pain I can see where the valium is coming into play. The adderal really takes away from the affects of methadone, opiates and valium (or benzos of any kind). I am unsure why any doctor would perscribe that. Even for ADHD adults usually get concerta or wellbutrin. There are unethical doctors out there who will perscribe a lot of drugs. I have seen that exact combination of drugs perscribed by a single doctor. I reported that doctor the to the board because the combination could have killed this girl. She was on: Paxil Kolonopin Ritalin Methadone Ambien ...and some other things I can't remeber-all from the same doctor. She was only 21.
I find it odd that a doctor would prescribe one person to an upper and multiple downers. Those are not good combinations...
To everyone curious about the adderall: some concerned doctors will prescribe amphetamines off-label to pain patients who complain about over-sedation from their pain meds. while this practice is discouraged by the AMA etc.. many doctors feel that if the patient can't function with the pain but also has trouble getting through their day without passing out due to the narcotics, that off label use of adderal or ritalin in safe doses is better than their patient going off and scoring a couple grams of coke to help perk them up...(this does happen) another explanation (and i think this is the more likely one) is that she is seeing a PM doc and also a psychiatrist from the PM doc she gets the Methadone and Oxy from the psychiatrist she gets the valium and adderal I myself used to get prescriptions of adderal for ADD from a psychiatrist, and i told her that i was having trouble sleeping and was getting really jumpy, paranoid and anxious, so she gave me a couple valium 5mg a day to counteract that. as I understand it, adderall+valium is a pretty standard theraputic combination. hope that helps, -V
