what percentage of posts in this section are about robert nesta marley?

i listen to pretty much nothing but reggae and ska

[lickle bit of afropop and calypso too]

and i hardly ever listen to bob marley [and then mostly wailers ska, and his work with scratch]

i can easily imagine reggae without him

i absolutely cannot imagine reggae without coxsone dodd or lee perry

[or bunny lee, clive chin, derrick harriott, duke reid, gg allin, niney the observer, prince buster]

bob gets credit for bringing reggae to the masses

when i think the vampire chris blackwell should get the credit--but merely for bringing bob marley to the masses, aided and abetted by eric 'duppy copycat' clapton

    one love?

no love--for augustus pablo, big youth, burning spear, cornell campbell, culture, delroy wilson, dennis brown, ethiopians, gregory isaacs, heptones, horace andy, king tubby, laurel aitken, linval thompson, prince far i, prince jammy, scientist, sly and robbie, tapper zukie, toots and the maytals, u roy, upsetters, yabby you

    [please prove me wrong]

Well when my friend got back from Jamaica last summer he said that he talked to all of the people there about weed and Bob.

They said that he was a god of the past and should be remembered. He said that they think it's funny when white people listen to him

with all due respect to the op and all the great performers he mentioned even the greats like burning spear cant begin to come close to expressing the spirit thru music like bob..
im not saying that there arent many others worth paying attention to, but none can take away from all bob had given..
his memory will always rise above the rest..

i dont think the issue is he is overrated as it is many believe the others you mjentioned are underated or being ignored because bob stands out so much on his own..

and i understand that that many amnazing artists are totraly unknown to the average marley fan
and that i woulkdnt call bob being overrated or the others just unable to cross cultural divides and reache audiances outside the reggae community i think marley just had a way about him that spoke to people of all cultures
no he is not overrated , how he lived , who he was.. there will never be another likje him..
yea theres many others who desserve recognition way more then they receive.. but even though bob receives so much revcognition that his legend status will never be threattened he still desserves more as well..

Without bob marley and without jimmy cliffs movie 'the harder they come' there simply would not be reggae available in the western world.

The spirit and truth in his words is second to none aswell.

    what the hell?

jamaica is in the west, last time i checked a map...

oh, you mean the us and uk, maybe?

i grew up in a us middle class suburb in the 60s and 70s

the first reggae song i heard was desmond dekker's 'the israelites' [still maybe number one in my book]

the second was johnny nash's 'i can see clearly now' [a year later]

the third was maybe the anti-immigrant-racist-eric clapton's cover of 'i shot the sheriff' [another year later]

just because record companies in the u$ wanted to ignore desmond dekker [and toots hibbert and ken boothe and pat kelly and ken parker and john holt and bob andy and marcia griffiths and leroy sibbles and] does not mean that bob was any better than they

he just had a marketable product--the kids of babylon will love this

now in the uk it was a whole 'nother story

they had record companies bringing jamaican music to the people since the 1950s

island, dice, rio, black swan, blue beat, the mighty trojan, doctor bird, fab, pama, crab, gas, nu beat, cactus, camel, bamboo, banana, sioux, forward, et cetera, et cetera

no, actually i should have caught that

my brain is not what it used to be [not that it ever was]

he was a producer [gregory isaacs, maytones], gg all stars was his house band

i always get him confabulated with the great ernest ranglin as well

is that who i REALLY meant?

    [everything crash]

well i dont think he is the coming of jah, but he is not overrated fo sho. There are many, many more reggae, ska and dub artists that in my opinion are much better than Bob Marley...but he is a legend

I think people say they don't like Marley because of his popularity. They think it is more cool to listen to stuff that used to be classified as "underground or alternitive" All the reggae act I've seen in the past, seem to to do some kind of tribute to Bob. I belive they are aware of what his influence has done for them. Listen to any of his Island LPs. All jams and no filler. Now his kids are another story. How could that last Ziggy win a grammy. It sucks. Back in the mid 70's when I saw Marley, 3rd World opened for him, I liked 3rd World better. They was like a Reggae Santana. On a cool note , 3rd world is with the Wailers at the Bell Chere fest in Asheville, TOO COOL

i am glad to see so many people sticking up for the rich pop star bob marley

rita's lawyers [fighting his children in court] will be well and fully paid

i am also glad to see almost no one mentioning a single other reggae star they think is worthy of respect

    thank you yumyum

maytals were wonderful, caught a bad break [toots in prison], recovered and were great again

melodians, a good friend of mine has requested that 'rivers of babylon' be played at his funeral

no song could be more perfect, do you agree?

I love the rivers of babylon, it is an absolutely amazing song but i believe 'Boney M' really sucked when they covered it and not many people know that the melodians did it first.

I think i want 'many rivers to cross' by jimmy cliff at my funeral.
