The String Cheese Incident or Phish Who do you like more and why? Who do you think is more talented and why?
Phish. there is no contest. SCi is one of my favorite bands....but they don't even come close to Phish. Phish gets so much more dangerous with their jams, leading into territory unheard....heading onto limbs that could snap at any moment. Phish has better songs. Trey is an amazing composer and has put together compositions that make Jerry Garcia look like an amateur. Phish will actually get dirty and scary....cheese (for the most part) stays very bright and in a major key....and everything is positive the whole time....which i love, when i go see Cheese.....but every time i leave an SCI show i always think to myself......damn i wish i got to see Phish tonight. Phish is just better.
PHISH x 1000 Solla is right, Trey is just a better composer/musician. Plus I tend to get kinda bored listening to SCI shows. Phish always has me guessing...
I kind of see where you guys are coming from... except for the fact that I really can't stand trey. He is just so obnoxious up there all coked up and crazy crazy. But the points made about how phish's jams are more "dangerous" and "risk taking" I will have to agree with. I never had the chance to see SCI or phish in concert unfortunately... but I did see trey playing at langerado music festival 2007 and was forced to walk away to watch another band play. I walked away when trey butchered his easiest to play song (first tube). (trey was fresh out of rehab and obviously back on the pills) I am going to listen to more live phish shows to get a better opinion on the subject but for right now... I enjoy SCI's music much more. I enjoy the rhythm section and the various string instruments going on.
ummm, you can't really judge trey's career on a 2007 festival set. that would be some extreme misinformation. as trey was a junkie and no long really Trey. having seen Phish, Trey Band and SCI......PHISH destroys them both....Trey band is fun, but same kind of idea as SCI, it doesn't get nearly as explorative and doesn't dare dance on the limbs Phish does. Trey Band and SCI both have great songs and have some amazing jams (and i love both bands), but they don't have the same "4 Headed Hydra" approach to music and improvisation as Phish. As a musician I can hear the more formulaic approach in SCI and TAB's music/jams...
I was not judging his whole career. I am also a musician and am down with the "formulaic approach." jams that logically lead into one another. If that is what you ment. I am just trying see what everyone else sees in phish. I am not going to lie, I didn't understand the Grateful Dead the first time I heard them. Now they are my favorite band and have completely expanded what my mind is capable of comprehending musically. Now I am trying to understand phish. Their lyrics seem meaningless, they don't have the best voices, but they have great jams... my favorites being Reba, David Bowie, Slave to the traffic light, well actually all of "Live 13". I never realized that asking this question was as preposterous as it was. If saw Phish live I wouldn't have needed to start this thread.
I am also down with the formulaic stuff, as it is a change and change is good. but, the formulaic approach is also predictable, which can be boring at times. Phish's lyrics are not meaningless. Certain songs do have what seem to be silly and non-sensical lyrics, but these tend to be older songs, written in the college years, which often focused on the rhythm of the words, rather than meaning. but, as time went by, lyrics really matured. there voices are off and on. they can sound quite good some times, but generally no they can't sing that well, but then again neither can the dead. they are both acquired tastes, Jerry's voice (which i think is one of the most gorgeous voices ever) is pretty awful to many people. Trey can sound very soulful some nights and really carry the song. and Page can sing pretty damn well to. i don't want to sound like i am bashing Cheese....as i have traveled to see them many a time....and love them so.... but i would skip a Cheese show any night of the week for a Phish show and i would never look back....the Phish experience will be far more exciting and worthwhile...
Those are good ones allright... good ole machine gun barn burners...no silly ambient/delay loop/noodle jams.(Although they have there place) imo, the question isn't preposterous, just the phrasing. I don't think there is such a thing as 'best' band, only those that one personally prefers. If I like Coke and you like Pepsi, that doesn't make Coke 'better' (although it is) Time will tell this better than me at the moment, but Trey Anastasio is one of the best guitarists/composers to come along in a long long time. Certainly one of the most talented living. It's unfortunate he has to carry the burden of the 'jamband/hippie' stereotype, because it turns off some people to his playing before they even listen. Any true guitar player that can listen unbiased and recognize talent even if they don't personally care for the music will tell you that Trey is a master player and arranger. oh...to answer the question... String Cheese, without a doubt.... Ha, no actually I personally prefer Phish but still dig the early Cheese.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lWi1dGT9UY listen to this. this will answer your question of why Phish pretty much own all the bands in the jam scene.....they just can't do what they do...
to call the ambient/loop jams silly hurts me.....those are my favorite i must admit. reference "Waves" at IT august 03.....i can't get enough of it...
Hopefully not too much... I loved them till the end, but the Phish flavor started drifting away from me around 97-98 when Trey started emcompassing more and more of the 'ambience'. I am not a fan of the 'single song lasted a whole set' stage, although the ambience/loops have a place, just not a solid 45 minutes straight of it. It may have just been where the band was creatively at the time or as some claim, it may have been the opiates, but just personally I am a fan of the 91-96/97 sound. Like I said tho, all just opinions.
totally...most people don't like the 'loopy/ambient' stuff..... but i got to say, i love those 45 minute monsters that go from 'face melter>wall of sound>ambient/loop>face melting' reference (wow another IT performance) 46 Days....that was amazing. Wolfmans 10/31/98....is one of my favorite and it purely turns into looping. but the non loopy jams that i love mikes>simple>contact>weekapaug @ cliffords ball oh my god! this is some of the highest energy ever captured on tape. its palpable.
seriously though, check out this ghost...the energy get so high...and its so tight....this is why Phish owns all.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lWi1dGT9UY
aww gawd.. Ghost.. the most loopy of the loopies.... LOL just joking, that is a nice jam..... How bout this one http://www.sendspace.com/file/qwhtvn
