You are very insightful at a young age,buddha. If you were around in the 60s,you would've been right out there,making a difference. I'm still a flower,just a silent flower now. i think about changes that need to be made,dream about fighting for all of our rights,but in reality,too many people have reformed,conformed,and are too concerned with the current American ideal, get all you can,waste,compete,spend,think of no-one but yourself. I wish I could make a difference,I wish that you could,but I think things are too far gone.The government has us all exactly where they want us. Scared,confused and helpless. We just have to sit back and watch the mess this world has become.It's sad. I think the number of people that want a change are just too few to be able to make a difference. This isn't the world I lived in ,in the sixties,and that's a shame. This place sucks ,but I try to tolerate it. I agree with you completely,but I just don't know how to make a difference?

No one wants to care anymore. Sure there is still the select few of us who are willing to make a difference. Hell, just last Friday I attended a Peace march through the streets where I live about a law the government is trying to pass. What a wonderful turnout it was. It made me feel so elated. I think the real difference is the economy. In the 1960's until the recession of 1974 one could drop out of society knowing that one could always drop back in and get a fairly good job. Now the economy has become much more competitive.

 

agreed. Back then you could drop out, and come back later. these days the economy is so competitive, everyone is fighting to survive and "make it big".

 

Yeah that really does limit us a little. I graduated from high school, but as of now I have no plans of college, unless it's some kind of trade school. I am definitely an advocate to gaining more knowledge and higher education but I just cant make myself go through something when half of the things I'd be learning are not necessary for my own personal goals. Thats why I plan on having my own shop

Besides all of that though, there are still hippies all over the place, take this forum, for example. I was once at the stage where I was like "Why can't everything be like it was in the 60s" but then a very wise old hippie told me that it's our time now. Now some people took that in the literal sense, meaning something like "If we build it, it will come" or whatever that quote is, and thought we could recreate what happened back in the day but I knew exactly what he meant. You cannot bring back what happened in the 60s. That was an amazing time, and it definitely helped shape history, but thats what it is, history. You can sit and wish for it as much as you want, and think about Woodstock, and Haight Ashbury, and the activism. But by sitting around and wishing, you are missing the most important messages that all of this stuff was for. It's about being who you are, expressing yourself, fighting for your rights, protecting people, helping people, loving people. If you dont think this is something we could achieve now, than I am sorry you feel that way, but thats also part of the reason there is no change. New times call for new changes, and new steps to get these changes. We cant try to live out of a time we weren't a part of, things dont work like that. One person saying "we should start a rally" isn't going to do anything, unless people see that everyone is serious, the person/people that are involved are well informed on the topic, and there is a solid plan behind everything that sounds like it will work. Our older hippies were peaceful, laid back lovers, but they were also very well informed of the current situations they were in and had so much heart that you couldn't tell them no, even if the answer was no. They would come back over and over again. It takes more than one person, and really, I think one of our biggest problems is organizational skills (lol).

I've heard too many people doubt the hippies of the new generation, and sometimes, it's hard for me not to agree but I also know that if we push, we really can succeed. And although I am young myself, I really don't think trying to involve our elders will do much when we dont look serious or organized. They hear us talk, and wish, and talk some more, but would you take things seriously if you've been hearing the same plan for years? I sure wouldn't, as sad as it sounds. The older hippies I know like to get hands on, and they are ready for action, not ready to talk about how great the action could be but...oh well...maybe next year.. As they say, coulda, woulda, shoulda. However, I'm sure they would help out and maybe even guide us to a good start and join in at the drop of a hat if they saw we were really ready to do everything we hope to accomplish. We can't depend on them to hold our hands through the process, because like my old friend said, it's our time, so it is a time for our generation to take the initiative, get involved, and take the reigns. This is the way I look at it. Yes, if I had a time machine I would go back, but really, I am a product of the 60s no matter when I was born, because I am a product of the message they were trying to send.

On that note, I would like to thank my wiser hippies out there, for making me the person I am, and you did really make a change. To be able to create little flower kids 10, 20, and 30 years later shows that you had an effect.:grouphug:
