Is there a difference from someone having dyslexia to someone who is just not very good at spelling, sentence constrution and grammer?

I ask this as I believe I have a blindness to words and written language, my own. I can debate and back up my point and challenge others with counter arguments. I can even read! Again, having clear in my mind what it is I want to say and articulate it too. But, when I read back threads that I've posted and spent time reading and re reading often there are mistakes I cannot see, and sneekerly edit and correct them later which can be days/weeks, just cannot bear the shame!

I do feel at times its a case of talking through what it is I want to put down rather than reading directly from the page but even then I often miss many simple mistakes, I just feel it is some sort of blindness. Is there any professional help out there?

Sure theres help, loads of people have these kinds of probs...its not quite so clear cut as "dyslexic" and "not dyslexic"...there are varying degrees...

I have this problem with numbers, which i was told was "dyscalculia"...I can tell the difference between symbols though, and can add very small amounts in my head and subtract too. I even know my tables! So i personally would just say im a bit crap at maths rather than having a particular difference in my brain. Im due to start a basic numeracy course in college in September which should help set things straight. I know they do these for literacy too...not for dyslexics or people who cant read...just for those who struggle a bit sometimes. Maybe something like that could help?

Definitely look into the governments new literacy inititiative, lots of free courses to give you a hand with anything you struggle with.

Personally I've been told there's a strong possibility I'm dyspraxic, which effects coordination and spacial awareness, and also makes it look like I can't spell because I have to correct every other word I type.

It's like people who always say that Dyscalculia is just an excuse for people who just can't do maths.

They are both very different to not being able to spell or add up!

If what you describe is dyslexia then I think a majority of the population is dyslexic to some degree. I'm sure there are specific brain pathologies and learning disabilities which seriously impair our capacity to comprehend or recognise written words, but yes this is very different from being a bit clumsy with words and tending to make mistakes without noticing, which we all suffer from to varying degrees. I have a feeling much of what is diagnosed, and particularly self-diagnosed, as dyslexia simply represents natural variance in linguistic and cognitive abilities. The trouble is the precise mechanisms of dyslexia have not been properly identified and delineated and the symptoms which are lumped in with dyslexia are probably accounted for by a range of different factors. Like others have suggested, if you are worried about it try literacy courses before even considering that this might be a pathological condition.

    Thnaks for the advice. Ok.

Although there are truths in my own personal point it wasn't intended to be a mellowthyme out pouring for attention, though the advice is gladly welcome. Some of what I said was in the style of my fabulous and very clever art of being dry and cutting edge witty. Which hasn't or doesn't translate; tumble weed? You bet!

i know 5 people who have dyslexia, one of whom also has dyspraxia. What i know is there are two types of dyslexia, logic and creative. One affects your art and creativity and one affects your logic (bet ya never guessed that, eh? ;))
