well, it's never really posed a problem these last 2 years. but today, we got in a fight over... of all things... bread. i buy whole wheat bread, and the last few batches have gotten moldy... i have been stubborn about not buying white bread (though he wants me to, cuz it don't mold), and i always cook vegetarian meals. so basically, he just exploded on me, saying i dont buy what he likes and i'm trying to turn him into a veg. he has always told me he loves my cooking and whatnot, and most of the money spent on groceries is my own lately... i just don't know what to do. i'm not going to spend my own money on a ton of food i dont feel healthy eating. at the very least, can someone suggest nutritious bread that doesnt get moldy!? it's painful. i feel hurt right now because i've always tried my best to make meals we can both enjoy....
You can batch freeze it. Freeze half the loaf- (depending on how fast you go through bread.) Or just keep the whole loaf in the fridge It will stay fresher. You could also try baking your own. We have been eating flourless sprouted grain bread (from the "food for life baking company) -for that very reason-its usually available in the frozen section. It has way more to it than regular bread-seeds ,whole grains, beans ,and doesn't go bad as quick so we have been able to justify its expense. Funny you should mention it actually. it was-still a source of contention for hubby and I, too. While he wanted our lil girl to eat healthy he felt like we were our wasting money on bread that gets moldy half way through a bag . - Not knowing exactly how th situation you described went down -you do sound very hurt. Like he isn't respecting your diet, despite your efforts to do that for him, which isn't fair. Does he go shopping, and help make meal plans with you? If not, than only he can be held accountable for not having the food he likes on hand.He is a grown man perfectly capable of knowing what foods he wants/needs..if he doesn't tell you what those foods are,or buy them for himself it is his own fault. Hubby was OMNI for YEARS living with me( before he became veg for his own reasons too) .and though it was a topic we avoided discussing in depth- we worked very hard on respecting each others opinion on food.
this isn't an omni issue but a control issue: he thinks you are controlling his diet. Are you making most of the money? The bread was an issue for my mom and step dad (both omni). My mom just bought two loaves. She had two Tupperware bread boxes to lock out air (with the moisture and wild yeasts/ molds). A tough zipper-top freezer bag will work, if the loaf can fit. Here in my mixed household, we want a "basic" bread and then a rye or "interesting bread." I do freeze half loaves, and the rest is kept in the fridge. I TRY to remember to take a few slices out a few minutes before use to allow it to warm up some. or we toast a lot of it.
Maybe he could buy his own food. My hubby and I agreed that I would never buy dead animals, so if he wants something like that, he must go to the grocer's himself, or ask for it to mommy.
There's a reason white bread doesn't mold. It's because it's not real food. White bread that doesn't mold is filled with preservatives, corn syrup, dough conditioners and other unhealthy, nasty chemicals. I agree with others who have said that you should freeze your bread. we don't eat much bread, but the Sprouted grain bread I do purchase lives in the freezer. I don't like it unless it's toasted anyway, so I don't keep any thawed, but you can always keep a few slices in the refrigerator or out, depending on how much bread you eat. My husband is a pescoterian, but I don't allow animal products in the house. I'm a good cook, so it's usually a non-issue. If he wants fish flesh, he goes to a restaurant, and other than that he eats what he wants. In the past, if he wanted white bread, he purchased it. But now that we have a child, he agrees that he needs to start sucking it up and eating more whole grains to set a positive example.
Yeh we freeze bread too. Having said that my fella's ok to eat my brown / granary bread if it's all that's in. I too am buying most of the groveries at the moment as my blokes having a tight month bless him. He hasn't complained though but he's not too fussy an eater, he'll eat anything cos he just loves food! He'll even eat my nutloafs which I'm quite impresed about, have to do them with beans and mash though! Maybe suggest that whilst you're buying and cooking he'll have to go veggie for ease, but if he wants to bring in his own alternatives he can do so on his own money? I personally don't like meat grease on my pans etc though so tend to keep his stuff separate. His kids from his ex partner are omni so often do them fish fingers etc but have recently found that they love veggie bolognaise which is cool, I don't think they realise the mince and cheese is soya though! Hope all goes well Clairex
thanks a lot guys! i'd forgotten that my dad always refrigerates his spelt bread, so now i am doing it with my wheat. got it a week ago and it isn't moldy yet... drummin, of course the debate over bread wasn't an omni-veg battle; however, it instigated one when he lashed out at me for my diet. of course i want him to be healthy, but i do not object when he eats food that i would not eat because i don't want to be manipulating him at all! it's just that, up until this fight, i was under the impression that he enjoyed the vegetarian diet. which i'm actually sure he still does. i mean, i'm a damn good cook! he actually just made boca burgers tonight. he's not a picky eater... i guess he just wanted to bitch and moan a little because he thought i was ignoring his request and controlling him instead of taking care of his health. i don't think he understands how truly terrible that shit is for you, though he admits he feels great when he eats my food and terrible when he eats meat and junk. anyway, i think we have both learned to be a little more respectful of eachother's wishes and diets because of this.
y'know, if my sweetie would give up just the fast food/ low quality flesh (and all eggs) I'd eat white bread! (OK, I'd so sneak the real stuff) you said: "most of the money spent on groceries is my own" I was curious if you are the high earner, because that can be a huge tension spot right there.
Mmmm but you still gotta love it. Nothing better than wonder bread miracle whip and bologna sandwiches.
Not enormously. I'm an on again off again vegetarian and I'm very sympathetic to 'the issues' but white bread really does taste much better than MOST whole wheat, just as meat or processed terrible-for-you foods in general taste better than the alternative. I can't say that? Anyway, as for the OP, I agree that I don't think it's an issue of food at all but of control. Finally, put the bread in your fridge! I thought this was common knowledge cuz my family always did it but I guess a lot of people don't?
I never had white bread growing up (it makes me cringe when my friends eat it)...my mom always bought potato bread (and now that they make it she buys whole wheat potato bread)...its not as heavy / thick as whole wheat is...and its like a happy medium... also it keeps for quite a while. See if he will try that...I don't remember the brand she buys ...its a Pennsylvania Dutch kind or something... even my dad eats it/ likes it...
I had to keep our bread in the fridge too. But for a special "treat" we would get all-natural tortilla shells or Flat-Out bread (when it was on sale) and make wrap-sandwiches. The flats didn't go bad nearly as quickly, and were SO good! Now we bake all our own bread, and with four of us it never lasts long enough to go bad love, mom
You CAN say that--but I dissagree.I rather like wheat bread.I like real breads in genreal, white is fine but that sweetened processed bagged grocer stuff tastes ICK. gimmie A good hearty rye for the right sammich. A hard italian bread with soup. I have NEVER thought meat tastes good. and I don't like alot of processed foods( like some, lil debbie is an evile whore) -because the TASTE bad, but TASTE is subjective,i at least realize that
You can always make your own bread. It can be white bread without all that nasty stuff in it. Or it could be half white and half whole. Bread making is surprisingly easy. I got into it for my health as well, and because there are NO good bakeries where I live. Beyond kneading, you don't do much. Knead, let rise, punch down, rise, and bake. The rising is done all by itself - no need to watch it. I usually make some on Sundays for the whole week, and also freeze in batches. Conversely, I make dough that is kept in the fridge, and when I need a roll, I bake it right up before dinner.
^Yeah, making your own bread is the best IMO, I make my own bread and put it in the fridge it will last about 2 weeks. I think it cost me around 25-50 cents to make 2 big loaves, good bread in the store is more then 10 times that. How do you do it? Do you put yeast in? I tried that once with the yeast in it and it just slowly rose over a day or so and grew bigger then the container. Any pointers?
Yes, I put yeast in it. This is the recipe I use: Bread dough It's fairly versatile. You can experiment with a variety of flours. And, sometimes, you do have to punch it down so it doesn't crawl out of the fridge. But, otherwise, it works well when you want fresh rolls daily.
make sure you use high altitude directions, especially with refrigerator dough. I didn't and it was scary.
