I am the only person in my family with extremely curly hair. Mom and dad both have wavy hair, my sister has hair that's flatter than dead. None of my friends have anything more than waves. I have absolutely no one to talk to who understands where I'm coming from. Is there anyone here who has corkscrew curls, and actually likes them? Do you have any tips for learning to like curls better?

i use to hate my hair and straighten it all the time (granted it is not as curly as yours though) it wasn't until one day I was lazy and didn't straighten it that my friends saw it curly and LOVED it and bugged me to leave it like that more often. Now I do and have grown to love it myself. It's sooooo much easier then straightening it all the time.

My mother never let me straighten my hair. My best friend did it for me once, but it was still wavy when she got done. She ended up losing the Battle of the Tresses, as I call it. To sunshin_daydream07- have you ever had them taken out? My sister had a friend who got dreadlocks, and she said that, even after she cut them off, her hair was never the same again.

i have curly hair also. it is not super super curly and coarse but it is still curly. i used to always straighten if and do anything i could to make it not curly and I always had short hair. but i started growing it out and using all natural shampoos and not put a lot of product in it and my curls have become my favorite part of me.
you should only use a milky looking shampoo...condition well...and only wash twice a week or so. the more you wash curly hair the drier it will get and be unmanageable.
i have an endless supply of curly hair advice lol
so if that doesn't help i have lots more :D

    good luck!

    well my advice-
stop using conditioner and brushing your hair. LOL.
no, seriously, i know what you are talking about, i have hair like that. it is very frustrating. i liked it when my hair was really long, but if it wasn't it would poof up.

Its up to you. i would either dread it (they are so great), or just work on growing it out. i know it is more to brush but it is harder for it to frizz and look really bad.

    best of luck to you!

My mom has curly hair so I hear the woes about it haha.. But I love when her hair is natural, she hates it. I think curly and wavy hair is so pretty though!

When i was born i had shirley temple hair you could pull my hair down and it would pop right back up. When i had my brain surgery my hair grew back straight, but when i grow my hair shoulder length it turns wavy /curly. But not the shirley temple curly mom wanted back after surgery!!!

I ended up stopping using shampoo entirely, and it IS a lot better. I've been thinking about spending the money to have it braided, but we're rather stretched for money. It's this in-between stage when it's not long enough to style, and too long to stay out of my eyes. And when I go a day without wetting it, it frizzes up.

PeaceItOut-I've heard, obviously, about not using shampoo, but not conditioner. I'm curiouse, where did you get that trick, and how does it work for you? What do you do when you get really frusterated with it? I'm working on growing it out, but so far, it's only down to my jaw when dry. When wet, it goes down to my shoulders. Have you ever had dreadlocks? Like I said, my sister's friend's hair was damaged when she took them out.

i figure she was reccomending stopping using conditioner because it will help hair dread. if youre interested in dreadlocks, head over to the dreadlock forum, they can answer all your qs :).
i used to have very coarse, thick wavy hair but not the corkscrew curls (i wish!!). now i have dreadlocks and im never going back. the best hairstyle ever. if youre going to get them though, you should view them as a permanent hairstyle. after several months, the locks will be matted and you will not be able to comb them out without a lot of pain, sufferring, damage and hair loss. the matting is good of course because the locks look more and more mature every month. most people who want to get rid of their dreads cut their hair to about 5 inches or less.

Sorry to butt-in, but I have to say that curly hair is the GREATEST! I think it's beautiful, and long curly hair is a sure way to get the guys to absolutely melt for you. I know the decision is yours, and you may or may not care for a guy's opinion on this one, but I think that cork-screw curls are way too cool to change ;)

I don't have curly hair at all, but I'd like my hair to be at least a little wavy. I hate it when it just sticks to my head.

Thank you for your dreadlock information. That explains what happened to my friend's hair. I tried braiding it the other day. It worked out well, and the braids lasted for several days. I'd like to learn how to cornrow, because that would keep it out of my face while I'm waiting for it to grow.

Thank you! Like I said, I've never actually straightened it, and am working to grow it out. It's in that in-between stage of short and long that makes it nearly impossible to keep out of my face. Eventually, though, I'd like to have it down to my hips (when dry).

My hair is coarse, very curly and wild. I used to straighten too, but not anymore. I just wash it once or twice a week. I only comb it when I wash it and then I just let it be. I cant really do anything with it, but just let it be. Everyone goes crazy for my hair, I had a guy stop me and my boyfriend to ask me what I do to my hair, that he wants his wife to let her hair like mine. Girls always tell me how much they love it and how jealous they are of it and that they wish they could make their hair go like that. This one guy told me the other day that it was so sexy. I get comments all the time, even when my hair needs to be wash and I KNOW it looks bad. I also had a guy say to me "having a bad hair day?" and I just laughed and said no, it's just doing it's thing.
My boyfriend loves it and doesnt want me to cut it, do anything to it. I've grown to love it. It tends to get really dry, so I use products for extra dry hair and a leave in conditioner and every now and then, things to strenghten it and repair it, because it breaks a lot.

Get a book called "Curly Girl". It has a LOT of tips for caring for curly hair. It's helped me a lot, but I still have trouble liking it. Every time the weather changes, my hair starts defying gravity. My hair does best when I condition it every day, but I can't because our water heater doesn't work that well, so only one person a day can take a warm shower or bath.

One thing that will help is STOP USING SHAMPOO. All it does is dry out your hair. (It has the same detergent as dishwashing soap, as a matter of fact.) Just gently scrub your scalp with conditioner once a week, and your scalp and hair will remain clean. Be sure to wet your hair down and condition it at least every other day. It will help relieve the dryness.

I am a really curley hair girl. Although not anymore. Sevral years ago I couldn't stand it anymore...and started dying and straightning...which changed the texture of my hair. Curley hair is hard to manage..I hated it...but when I go back and look at old pictures I wish I would have kept it and not ruined it with bleach and flat irions (ah, what to teenagers know about the after effects of these things). I wish I had atleast the option to wear it curley sometimes...but it isin't the same...the curl has turned into a frizz that is a wave. I miss my locks :(
