I am going to Nijmegen this weekend and if you like I can try to visit a place for you to see what it is like. Just PM me and I will see what I can do. Another suggestion is try these sites. They offer temporary accomodation in buildings that are currently empty, anything from an old school to a disused factory. These organisations rent out rooms to people with the main purpose of stopping people from breaking in an squatting them. It is easier for them to kick people out when they want to then. THey can be alright, I lived in a squat 2 years ago that was an old nuns school in a forest and it was swell, the rest of the building was anti squat. http://www.camelotproperty.com/onestop.php?lang=nld-nl&bo=o http://www.anti-kraak.nl/ Looking for rooms on the internet you have to watch out there are a lot of people in government houses who are on the sick and have spare rooms that they rent out on the fly. They can be alright, but in my experience of that I have usually ended up living with some madman who always complains about stuff and has strange habits. Don't be put off by that though, for a temporary fix it could be just what you are looking for. I will be happy to sus the place out if you find something and/or give you advice on the area. You can also try these guys. http://www.wfa-nijmegen.nl/ Renting rooms through agencies can be VERY expensive in Holland, but these guys are more reasonable. They only charge 50% 1st months rent for commission. Other options as a last resort you can try neighboring towns, Arnhem is nearby and easier to find a place to stay, but it is not as fun as Nijmegen. You can also easily commute from Wijchen, and it is nearer so you can cycle into town at the weekends. This pension is right in the centre of town and about the cheapest B&B you'll find if you are really stuck. http://www.laresidence.nl/html/englishhome.html I will ask around if there are any new squats in the are when I am there also, maybe you can find a room in one of them for a short while, but it is really hard to get into these places sometimes and also they just shut down a load of squats recently (including the one I used to live in). Hope that helps. My grammar is rubbish sorry.
Hehe, don't worry about writing in English, I'm German and have just started learning Dutch so understanding English is actually gemakkelijker for me. I haven't found a place yet that I would ask you to look at but thank you for your offer. As for renting out a room at weird people's places, I don't really mind as long as they're not violent and as the room has a roof and heating. If I'm really stuck, I have an offer from a friend of a friend who wants to rent out a room, but she wants to have more than I can afford for a room of just 8m2. Or I'll try couchsurfing the whole time, but this would be the most stressful alternative. Thank you for the links, I'll check them out! ... Okay, I had a look at the anti-squat sites, I don't think they'll be helpful to me, because they require a Dutch passport and long-term employment, both of which I don't have.
So far as I am aware you don't need a Dutch passport to stay in anti-kraak. I've never heard of that anyway, the guys who stay in the anti-squat next door to us a couple of years ago were all Portugese.
It doesn't say that on the anti-kraak site.
Well I ended up staying here AGAIN, did my usual staying up too late on friday after work and drinking too much beer. Maybe next weekend. I am also looking for a new place to stay in Den Boshc, but it is even more difficult here. The agencies are all looking for 2 months deposit and commission of one months rent. I am honestly sick to my teeth of the accommodation situation in this country, it really is bad. Good luck to you, let me know if I can help in anyway. I doubt there is much I can do to help, but when I read your post I thought I would offer you any help I could because I know from my own experience what a complete nightmare finding a place to stay is in this country.
Thanks again for your help. I have found a room for the time of the language course now. I still need something from 01/09, but I guess it'll be easier to find a place when I'm there.
Pleased to hear that. You shouldn't have any bother finding somewhere for 01/09, the summer time is the time too look, all the students leave and free up all the rooms. If you can imagine that Nijmegen has the largest student population density in Europe, about 20,000 I think, that is a lot of rooms. Just let me know if you need any advice/help and I'll be glad to assist. Have fun and make sure you check out Merleyn, Doornroosje and Triainon. Bijstand is a good bar also. If you are around for Queen's day be sure and go to Oranjepop. http://www.oranjepop-nijmegen.nl/ Ik hoop dat u heeft een heel leeker tijd in Nijmegen, succes!
