plants to tall, what do I do?

4x5x8 area, two 400w MH, ten 100w cfls, problem is plants get to big,
how do I keep them from overgrowing, or growing into the lights. The tops shot up past the lighting. undergrowth yellowing, since light isnt reaching them and the cfl help there,
plants that are on 12/12 are still growing vertically, should I train then to grow horozontally? plants at 8 plus weeks old are thick, yet their buds look like they are growing more vegetivly than, Should I go with a 10/14 time and ripen faster. or is it due to heat in the room. the temps 80+ at plant top. air is circulated with a 12'' fan. night time temps at 72, but as low as 60 sometimes.

If I try to control growth before Flowering time, the plants are smaller and the bud yeilds are like way way low. this has me thinking too train horozontally to have a full top flower and not a nipped ones.

the sativia strain I got has a real fruity light green lizard smell, reminds me of a Hawaii Maui Waui, probable my problem huh? not a indoor stain. but I like this plant cause its easy to clone.. but clones still grow like 6' indoors. wtf should I do?

Should I force a ripen "sometimes" with a 10/14 cycle??

I would say that IS your problem. sativas are taller and they take longer to finish. I recomend you switch to a hybrid if possible. they are also easy to clone.

ok, I sort of knew that, but on the Ripening part, will the 10/14 speed that up, this stain, having grown it easiely before, never been able to harvest it earlier than 12 weeks.

I dont like experiment to much, suffered the consicences in the past doing that with other batches.

Slice the tips with a razor blade. It'll stay bushy if you are consistant.

Tried that once with haze but didnt seem t speed the bloom time up still took 16 weeks. Yep ya need t top or pinch out the main growing head u will also get a better yield due t the plant growing more branches n head. Dont be tempted t do it t seedly under 4-6 weeks old though n always leave a 2 week gap if ya want pinch more head.

Im thinking this shooting up vertically, is due to MH lights...and If I could keep the plants at under 3'. with a foot top bud ratio, Id be happy,

with a hawian x skunks, ive got problems with bud density and airy see through buds... this has to be a heat related and lighting spectrum problem.... when the color of the leaf on this stain starts getting dark green and not producing flowers more aggressively then I know it time to change to hps.

multiple plants in a single soil mediums even make things more complex,

    Hey there,

The temps are in the acceptable range.

You have to put them in at 18"-24". If they get too tall start training the tops by hooking them with twist ties/wire. Another thing is that unless you strip off the lower branches the plant will waste energy on their growth instead of up top. For a 4-5' plant the bottom 2' should be bare.

Multiple plants in one container as you said is bad. It forces the fight for light and root battles. A hook from each plant pulling them down away from the center will help greatly.

A 10/14 night/day will prolong flowering but gives bigger yields the 10/14 day.night will hasten ripening but diminish yield.

Just run a 12/12 and train & trim the bottoms.

For a 4-5' plant the bottom 2' should be bare... < I thought so,, thanks for that input. it makes sence. id get paroniod though when the bottoms start leaves start wilting and falling off, but I know its the cycle of the plant, and this old school girl I know said the same thing. pluck off those dead leafs below the are wasting energy..

Its a common problem. Too many clones or seeds started while the girls in 12/12 still have 2 months to go :)

It also takes away from having massive amounts of little popcorn buds.

Say your at a full ripening stage and instead of harvesting the bud you leave it alone. and flip the 18/6 what happens to the buds? Ive done it with tiny left over but never with a 4oz bud..

What would the plant do, Would the buds get super huge and loose Thc, or gain thc while growing vegitively, never accually had the patients to keep a 4oz bud on and revert, patients wait I ment heart. like "Oh no we're smoking that its done"... the legality of it just means less experiments cause of cost and time, Some day some day...some day I tell you...

Hmmmmm What would happen it that the buds would revert to the vegetative state and you would see growth erupt from the buds (after some weeks had passed). Just like regenerating a harvested plant you would see first single bladed leaves and it would progress from there. Ever notice the bud structure and the small leaves (trim) new branching appears from those nodes in addition to the main stem and branch nodes.

Eventually the THC remaining on the buds would be oxidized to CDN/CDB (ie good by high hello sleepy time). For example the THC on the buds of a regenerated plant will turn amber over time (over ripe).

There used to be a technique that would do just that (switch to 18/6 or so) and then put then back into flowering and supposdly had an increase in yield. Marginal results at best.

I do not recall exactly how badly it effected the hermie tendency but it did increase it.

    Someday...... :)

:)thanks that was very educational.. Ive tried this back and forth thing but the buds were not nearly in any true form, and were only flowering for 6 weeks. then 4 back 18
time consuming and not what I though would happen didnt happen, malfunction and plant spun out and went gay.

so my experiment didnt succeed, and the hermi factor was 100% well with that preticular plant. I wouldnt be sure of other strains. but I can imagine if you could stabilize the stain the buds would be hummungus. well maybe they would in theroy..

    Never hurts to try! :)

It is real hard to improve on ole mother nature. The best techniques usually involve maximizing space, either through the SOG or Scrog, for indoors at least.

    Green Thumbs up to ya!
