Hate is a very strong word. I consider hate to be such a strong dislike of someone that you wish them misery and would like for them to die. How can people hate others they don't even know?
People go on about what religion has been responsibe for in the past, the wars it has cause blah blah blah.
All the hatred and arguing is right on of course. After all, "they caused a war in the past, we don't like wars, so now its our turn to wage war on them". Right, makes perfect sense.

I think it is interesting that Jesus is shown in shadows, commonly what us used to depict those associated with evil (at least in my understanding). Or it could be a comment on his status of political aggitator...interesting artwork

Hmm...Never thought of it in that way untill you mentioned it....Interesting indeed. I like the painting though. Its beautiful. I like its name too - Quod est veritas ?

Anyway, I think this painting is perfect for this thread.
Especially beacuse Jesus is in shadows.

that is indeed a very intriguing painting. who is the man talking to him? he looks as if he's reprimanding him or something

to me it looks like he is trying to have some kind of conversation and wants to share his ideas, but whoever is in the shadows is just like, STFU.

I don't hate catholics or even catholicism ... i can usually agree to disagree with individual believers but in light of the form of christanity it became, ... coming from, originally the roman emperors where politics got involved and has been ever since. In other words this brand of christianity has always been a political tool, with a veil of piousness hiding unconcious agendas. It thinks to itself it is 'saving' but it is destroying. This is where the whole of christianity misses the mark,... by thinking it has to save people ... and in the process, look what destruction and fear it made.
It's just a 'christ complex' on a massive scale. The 'real' christ knows when to leave be.
So i don't hate it. It just really bugs me that people can't find their way without feeling they need to adopt a whole set of ready made beliefs ... and then not adhering to them anyway.

well from a christian point of view, we are made in God's image, so either way he should still look human..

and even besides that, the person standing in the shadows looks INTENSLY evil.

Im not sure I understand the message behind this painting.

I wikipedia'd the artist, and he does a lot of Christian/NT temed paintings, and it appears that Jesus is often slightly distorted in many of them (but to be fair, some of them were passion pictures and that is more expected.)

to me what it shows is the outcast Jesus. The Jesus that was rejected by his disciples (Peter, Judas, everyone fled) as well as his own people. Apparently handing over a fellow Jew to a Gentile ruler was one of the worst crimes against Jewish law (that is why Judas probably felt so guilty in Matthew's gospel).

Who knows, maybe he is even in the shadow for practical and aesthetic reasons (this is probably after the scourging by the looks of Jesus' robes), maybe it is so he doesn't have to paint him as bloodied up... I did some research, apparently Gay (properly Ge or Ghe) was fond of protraying Jesus quite mortal-like. I think that Christians now have forgotten that Jesus was also a man, so I think there is something to be taken from that. http://www.19thc-artworldwide.org/autumn_03/articles/lang.shtml
Has some insights into this panting in particular.

We had a discussion in my Islam class today about the Muhammad cartoons from Denmark, and I think we have to be careful not to say "tis is anti christian" or "this is anti muslim" etc.

well when you consider the things that Jesus was supposed to stand for - universal love, peace, harmony, and then evaluate his potrayal in the painting, you could see where one would get that idea.

his enveloped in darkness, shrouded, has his head lowered, and just looks all around distorted and pretty much just scary.

no that actually makes perfect sense that jesus looks like he's silent in the shadows because when pilot kept asking him if he was guilty or not he barely spoke. and pilot just shouted at him to try to get him to testify his innocence but he kept silent.

    very interesting indeed
