ok i have fairly thick hair and its about 2 inchs long could some one tell me how to get these bad boys started if so it whould be really appreciated
2 inches? then its easy. 1.stop brushing it 2.keep it clean..use a natural shampoo with no residues. 3. repeat for 6-12 months. result= bad boy dreads.
I had dreadlocks for almost a decade. Though I grew them on buddhist principle, they ended up being my largest attachment, so I cut them. Now my hair is probably close to 2" and the hair has never known a brush. I have always only used Dr. Bronners and I have a head full of locks. So your hair will lock up, just give it alot of time. Peace and Metta
mine started bout 2 inches as well just let it be..keep it clean..and seperate 1 clump from another often
my nasty hippy hair was braided and started gettin all knarly and dready, took so long to tear that out.
woah 2 inches? how long ago did you start your dreads? that's some impressive growth! (sorry for straying from the topic..)
back to the no residue soap where could i aquire sum like at wal-mart or any where that sells shampoo's
Usually any Health Food Store carries some sort of natural soap. If you don't have any luck, hit up the source, Dr. Bronners. Free shipping is also a plus. Good luck friend, all hair will lock up with time. Cheers and Metta
don;t worry about using some special shampoo, it's a waste of effort. I just wash with vinager, sometimes in conjunction with lemon juice. do it whenever it starts to feel gross, your idea of 'gross' will change in about 3 weeks btw =p you won't need to wash very often...once a month might even be pushing it depending on how oily your head is. as for starting them, there are two main ways, section your hair and "backcomb" the sections and wait, or skip the sectioning/backcoming and just wait... patience is the main ingredient.
nerthus been 18 years almost id really rewally advise washing more then once a month..lol once a week is perfect but when ya feel lazy u can go 2 weeks ofcourse i feel grosser after a week in the city then i do a month in the woods even with them caked in mud wash em when u feel the need most ppl find thats about once a week plus they dread faster anbd better right after u weash so why would u not wash for a month? thst will just really slow the process
HEy I was just wondering, which Buddhist principle are you talking about? Because monks usually keep their heads shaved, in the name of simplicity. But I can see how they could become a major attachment, if u maintain them a lot. I have started studying up on Buddhism and practice a lot of their principles, but I also share the Rastafarian belief of keeping my body as whole and pure as possible...
oh and washing, you could wash once a month.....that is, if you don't mind your hair being nasty. If you have been washing with normal shampoo, your hair is used to getting it's daily does of chemicals, and has become dependent on those. So at first you need to ween yourself off that chemical dependance. Wash every couple days at first, then slowly work up to a week, and so on. And plus, you don't want your hair to be dirty at first, cuz dirty hair slows down the locking process. Clean hair helps knot form and feels good...
Well, monks do shave their heads when they take their vows, but I am not a monk. Although I did spend some time with a sangha I of course kept a shaved head. But when I came back from my (much longer than expected) retreat I decided to continue my practice with equal vigor. Monks shave their heads, of course, because that is what Shakymuni Buddha did to renounce his royalty. Well when you get into the scritpure it speaks against "Rites and Rituals". I believe shaving your head constitues, atleast to me, a rite and ritual. So to renounce vanity I decided what best works for me is to not do anything whatsoever to my hair accept keep it clean. Now i'm not arguing any buddhist principles, I follow every precept when I go to stay at a monestary. But i'm doing what Lord Buddha said to do which is use his words to best fit my lifestyle. Sorry it's so longwinded i'm celebrating 4 20 and trying to type. Cheers and metta I'd also like to add that my parents were both buddhist and I was raised buddhist. I took refuge in the buddha, dharma, and sanga when I was 16 and ready to devote myself to reaching total liberation of mind. I'm not a newcomer to the pracise, i've read the Tipitaka in it's entirity and still continue to read it.
Right on, I still don't completely understand it but it's all good. It seems like the head-shaving ritual and the scripture that speaks against rituals are two very contradicting things. But maybe I will understand it better once I get more into it, lol.
