    Yo :)

I had dreads for a few months and ended up cutting them off because I realized the perils of using wax. A shame, really, but I learned some great things about dreadlocks afterwards and here I am two years later, with my hair regrown all the way past my shoulders, day 16 on my second set of dreads.

This website is really hard to use and I'm not yet sure how to upload pics, so here are some links from my frequented site.

    Hurrah! http://www.shroomery.org/forums/files/08-007/330677884-P1010500.jpg

I initially backcombed and after trying it again a few days later to knot up the hairs that fell loose, I decided to just let it all go and only rip and tear and briefly palm roll the ripped dreads.

    Yay!

why yessss dem some nice locks dere! oh hey! what happened to the sistren that suggested trying a felting needle? well...i gotta say i tried it and not only is it fun...IT WORKS!! really well...and it isn't putting funk in yer dreads. i highly recommend this method. i've had my dreads for close to nine years now and the felting needle helped me tighten up the tops of my locks. just be careful not to poke yerself ...heh heh heh. i picked up my felting tool on etsy.com so i'm sorry i didn't agree with you the first time sister...i guess seeing is believing.

quick question for anyone who can answer. well my dreads are getting kinda loose and i was wondering if using a wool hat and rubbing it on my head (i guess you can make dreads that way) would help tighten them up?

    how old are they
thats part of the process early on, they will loosen before they tighten
a salt water sprits can help tighten rem quicker, but only time will really doi the job
rubbin with a wool hat cant hurt though

i wash them with what ever is in my shower... haha. umm no maintenance really just palm roll them once in a while.. i previously used wax and soon learned that i shouldnt, that was like 4 months ago... i back combed them myself, that didnt go over to well but neadless to say they seemed to find there way into dreading. some are tight some arnt and some are loose on the ends and others at my scalp. ill post a few pictures when i get a chance ... prolly 2day or 2maro.

So, it's good to hear that so many folks are turnin on, but i wonder if you care what i think.

When i first started dreading, about 15 years ago, they were called "natty dreadlocks". I asked folks what that meant and was told.....

'natty is for natural, and dread is the feeling that the "bald head" (military/bouguois) man feels when he sees the natural locks'

I never backcombed, or put anything in my hair except campsmoke and river water. If i get lice, instead of poisoning myself and the world, i cut my hair into a metal bucket and light them on fire. I have grown 4 sets in 15 years and always 100% natural.
I feel much better about natural dreads than styley dreads. When someone (like my dentist) ask "who does your hair" i tell them "God does my hair" and they always stop teasing me immediately.
Besides the fact that tying knots in your hair is not natty, it also doesn't really look the same as dreadlocks (sorry). DREADLOCKS are the FINISHED mane of the lion spirited man (or woman), not the temporary rebellion of not washing or combing your hair for a few months (though that is a good start). The finished product takes 3-5 years, and takes that long no matter what you do. Wait until those knots grow out, and you will see the difference between the two.
My advice is to just wait it out. If you are having trouble getting them to dread, quit using fancy shampoo with detangeling conditioner. Go camping for a couple of months and let god and nature commune with your head. Folks who wait and go natural are glad they did. Promise.

My seven year old son has never seen a comb on his head. He started dreading at about one year, and now he is about 70% dreaded. It took a while because he had baby hair, but his dreads are way legit, all natural.

If you want to do something to help them dread; perhaps you live in the city or something, or just want them to 'hurry', then. . .

Massage your scalp vigorously a few times each day. It is good for the scalp circulation and over a period of a few months will help your hair dread in a very natural way. ; )

have faith. faith takes time. It's not faith if you think you need it right now.

    jah love.
