After getting back from a trip to Florida, i was going thru the seashells we ' my wife and daughter,me" picked up on Pensacola Beach, well one of them has a crab in it, after googling about hermits most say i should take him back to the ocean, ugh, thats 1200 miles each way "houston is closer than pensacola" otherwise i'm sentencing him to a sure death
"according to the hermit crab doctor"http://members.aol.com/jill307/hermitcrabdoc8_mar.html

so should i take him back? yea or nay
so far its 2 yea's an 1 nay:)

i would take him back, but that is mighty far to drive to save a hermit crab.
If you can afford the gas to do so, i would say take him/her back
if you cannot, see what kind of habitat they live in, and see if you can reproduce it

Ive had pet hermit crabs (i know how bad it is now but I was young)
sand in a terrarium with a sponge that wet (for humidity)
and a shell with water should hold it
You can get kits at the mall where they sell crabs, maybe it will save it.

I'd say take it back also but I agree that is too far to drive for a crab. I also agree he may be too sick or half dead by now anyway, it might actually be better off if you kept it at this point, and did your best to create an environment for it.

You might also ask around for anyone that already has hermit crabs as pets and takes good care of them. If they are smart they won't put it in with their other ones, and they will set it up with it's own tank and know just how to care for it especially if it IS sick.

Another option is to ask around for anyone that might be driving up that way and wouldn't mind taking the crab with them and releasing it back on the beach - even if ti doesn't survive, at least he'd get a "burial" with more dignity than in the city, even if it is merely succumbing to the food chain.

Turns out he's "or she" a marine hermit crab aka "thin stripe"
meaning he lives in the ocean not land.
He's been doing fine in a 2 gallon tupperware bowl with sea salt additive.
We ended up buying a 29 gallon saltwater starter kit,"kinda over-kill but its was the smallest salt water tank i could find in a short time" he's lovin life alot more now, i assume he is healthy as he likes to re-arrange his tank every night. He has no problem moving & stacking rocks that weigh atleast a pound.

Awww I am so glad to hear he's doing okay so far. That's adorable that he rearranges in that manner, lol.
