my focus wasn't on the security company itself but on the individual who had his finger cut off after he was kidnapped while protecting another companies employees that provides communication services to the area.

Your question is "what constitutes a hero?" which concerns the individual himself. i was wondering why you focus so much on the kidnapped and mutilated american and not on the people who kidnapped and mutilated him.

Is there anything specific you can point to about this individual that leads you to question his character?

The kidnappers have never been touted as heroes. Thus I didn't focus on them. I question his character for one simple reason, his employment and employer. Only one of the hostages worked for a communications firm. The person I was speaking of did not. He worked as an independent security contractor, ie mercenary.

When an ex-gi does not re-up and instead goes to work for a private firm, hired by another nation (Italy) bearing arms and selling forbidden arms on the black market in a war theatre, I think I am within my rights viewing that individual as a mercenary.

How the kidnappers are viewed is not relevant to the discussion. I had to watch fund raisers held in my area and rallies for a young man who chose to sell out, to a firm that short changed him and the others in their employ. We had no oversight of their activities as taxpayers of the US.

His parents plan on burying him with full military honors. So far there has been no report of how the Veterans Association sees that. I doubt they will provide an honor guard since they did not attend the fund raisers or rallies.

Just as the students in Tianamen square, funny isn't it? It doesn't diminish my respect for them, only my respect for my government.

Hey guys/gals.. Notice stev90 does NOT post his AGE??? Which means one of two things. Either he is 12 or a 55 year old, 300 lb. stalker looking for 19 year old hippy chicks. Be very careful folks.

You know StevO, you really are the perfect dupe. You obviously HATE the military and anyone in it. But like a ignorant fool, you have a Country Joe McDonald song listed on your profile. Country Joe is a HUGE supporter of military veterans! He himself was a volunteer. He was very much against the war but has always STRONGLY supported the men and women who serve!!! Here is a quote from the veteran's link at his website:
"I know that some of the links on this page will offend some veterans. My only requirement for being on this page is that the site relate positively to and for veterans. I hope you find the links useful and enlightening."

You may learn something from someone you obviously admire, TOOL!!!

A hero comes in many forms, and not just someone who fights or is in a war.

A hero is a parent who cares for their diabetic child, the person who sticks up for someone being bullied, who stands up for what is right even if it means they are then subjected to ignorance and stupidity.

I often think that previous generations must look at ours with regret; heroism, integrity and honour are a dying breed. Self-absorption and ignorance and immaturity are rife.

My Dad is a so-called mercenary, he now uses his experience as a soldier fighting for politicians to earn a good living to provide for his family. He is my hero even though he is flawed. There are so many shades of grey in this discussion it is too much to go into.

What you say is true. But one has to question motives when one sells one's talents, training and gifts to the highest bidder. I hope your dad makes it home safe, and I hope he doesn't lose his moral compass while employed.

exactly.... I guess to me "Hero" is defined by the US Troops. They sacrifice everything so that we don't have to sacrifice a damn thing. They serve no matter what the cause or conflict some politician or president has gotten them into... It doesn't matter. They lay their lives down for us.
