the whole point of a good topic is that it inspires ideas and thoughts that expand on a topic. and in order for a topic to be expanded upon, you must bring in outside subjects into the matter. some peple like to call that "off topic" perfect example a long time ago i created a thread called "is it okay to feed kittens to a snake". many people responded to it and no two points of view were alike. someone said the bones in the kitten would harm the snake and mouse bones wouldnt. so the subject changed to the differences in teh physiology of the skeletal structure in cats and rodents. then you can imagine the examples and resources people came up with to prove rheir viewpoints. stuff completely unrelated to the original topic, but still part of the conversation conversation is made to evolve. if i had to click on a new thread everytime something reminded me of something else, that would piss me off.
you have a point man. When I have a conversation, I dont just stop at one subject and stick to it. Its a lil silly.
well if people stuck to the topic these threads would be less than half the size they are. i wont name names but some people here do nothing but ruin topics. its funny because they usually have thousands upon thousands of posts.
Of course conversations evolve but sometimes it gets on my tits when I see a good tppic that I want to reply to but the last 5 pages are just people telling each other how great/sexy they are. I confess that I too am sometimes responsible for this type of posting. I know, it just happens, but sometimes it grinds on me a little.
Actually that kind of pisses me off too. It has been hapening a lot lately. Most of my stalking is done by PM
Death is absolutely right. If you start a conversation about something like the human consciousness, then it's only inevitable that it would lead onto other things. All ideas are connected in a way, and to prevent this natural flow can really hinder possible realizations and discoveries from being made. If I owned my own forum website, I would allow a lot of freedom for people to go off-topic. As long as it connects to the main idea in SOME WAY. For instance, if we start talking about kittens, we may start a conversation about what's cute, and so on. But if we start talking about kittens, then bring in a debate about the Iraq war, then that wouldn't make much sense.
What if I was wondering how many of the US soldiers there carried pictures of kittens in their personal belongings or how many kittens have been left homeless by stray bombs? Therein lies the problem. At the end of the day, there has to be some sort of moderator, whose opinion on what connects to the topic is always subjective.
Well, that's a pretty wild connection. Anyway, I think it's healthy if certain things just come out a certain way. It's like a little community, helping each other with there issues. If someone wants to make a connection with iraq and kittens, then maybe that's displaying an issue that a particular member is having, and it could bring it out in the open... which is a good thing, it could initiate growth. I mean. This is a forum full of HIPPIES, and it seems fitting to look at the members as part of our family, because many ways it is. If a member of a tribe goes on a tirade, talking about a wild tangent that has nothing to with with anything, then it would be the tribes job to figure out wtf is going on with that dude. That's how I like to see it, anyway. It doesn't seem so healthy for a conversation to always remain so rigid. Maybe I'm just crazy though, but it's pretty important to me that it remains open like that. But you're right, it eventually should go back on track, but it's hard because even the mod would initiate his own subjection.
So wait, could you feed a kitten to a badger? Actually I think I'm one of the worst offenders at derailing threads, and I am trying to get better about it.
I don't know...threads always being off-topic is probably half of the reason I don't really post much in this forum anymore.
I welcome everyone to veer off topic on my threads. It's the difference between a conversation and serial monologue. Booo. Boring.
