I do smoke and i don't find it as something "from the devil" as my teacher sayed :D
And i dont care if my girlfriend smokes or not, altghough it bothers a lot of girls.
I find another thing more interesting, that the ones (not all) that have quit smoking (or somethin else) are very intolerant for the one that smoke (or do somethin else) as if i have made them stop smoking. And also feel better and stronger (mentaly) than me.
Actualy i can't wait when they will finaly stop fooling around and kill us all (smokers).

    Speaking as a former smoker:

When a person quits smoking his sense of smell returns. Eventually his nose regains full sensitivity.

When I used to smoke, I obviously didn't mind being around other smokers . Now, after 7 months of not smoking, my nose has become so sensitive I can hardly stand the smell of cigarette smoke. I'm not intolerant of smokers, I'm intolerant of smoke.

Also, the worst thing any recovering addict (of any substance) can do is to constantly be exposed to his former addiction. It is extremely difficult to quit smoking when everyone else around you is smoking. I actually quit smoking several times only to smoke again. So it only makes sense for me to not hang around smokers too much - and then, only when they're not smoking.

i'm dating a smoker right now, and to be honest it doesn't really bother me. he never smokes at my house, never smokes inside his, only outside. he rarely smokes around me unless i happen to be outside, and he never really has "smoke-y" breath because after he smokes he usually brushes his teeth, eats somehting or has a gum. i think he's really good about it, he's tried to quit but hasn't yet. it's okay with me, as long as he quits eventually.

If I were single I would not date a smoker because as an ex smoker I find the habit absolutley unhealthy and nasty. The smell, everything. I can't believe my fiance still loved me when I smoked.

Well smoking's dirty disgusting smelly and smokers mouths taste errrrrrrrrrrr:)

The thing is tho ' lots of girls who smoke are better looking than their non smoking cou terparts.Maybe it means they eat less , maybe its because theyve got lots of pent up nervoous energy ( get my meaning:))

Unfortunaly tho too much and it ruins your lungs and affects your appearance long term.Ive never smoked but been out with lots of smokers ( who made my clothes smell LOL)

I only smoke on occasions, so I would also prefer someone who, if they smoke at all, only smokes occasionally. I don't care what other people do with their bodies, but I am aware of the health risks. I'm not saying this as a huge "DON'T SMOKE" thing because that would make me a hypocrite, but I'm always afraid chain smokers are going to just drop dead at any second.

I really hope that doesn't sound *itchy.

I'm in a situation where I like someone, and she's a smoker. It's a turn-off, yes. If it's going to be real love her smoking won't matter... if you were to find the love of your life, fall deeply in love, and then find out something about them, such as they are actually addicted to Heroin or something - how much would that change things? It would make me see her in a different light, but I wouldn't fall out of love. And I realise we're all flawed humans, smoking is disgusting though. So yes I'd date a smoker, but she'd have to be very special!

Why is there no "I'd prefer it" option? I love the smell of smoke, combining relationships and nicotine addiction is heavenly.

Pretty much every guy I've ever dated has smoked...just because it's the scene I put myself in for so long...I'm not a smoker, but I'm not a militant non-smoker.

I just ask that you not smoke indoors while I'm there, because I don't like my clothes smelling like it. AND if I were to ever get pregnant and my partner smoked (my current partner does not smoke), I would insist that you ONLY smoke outside. Period.

Though my current partner chews tobacco. I hate that shit. I love him, but will NOT kiss him after he chews. I fucking hate it...it's disgusting...yet, I love him just the same. *shrugs* weird.

You should date someone for who they are, not what they do. If someone enjoys smoking, let them smoke. I think mental health and happiness are more important that physical health, but apperantly America feels otherwise.

Damn, I'm new here picking up all these very looong threads from years ago. I glanced at some of the responses and they were standard. So, here are my observations that will cover the likely discussion of NO SMOKING!

Like every other punk of my generation I started smoking secretly in high school because it was cool. I continued smoking while in the military, but realized it wasn't healthy (got more colds in the winter) so I stopped almost every winter but started again in the spring.

After the service I continued smoking (yes drinking and smoking go together) for a few years until I realized that even as a smoker I couldn't enjoy being in a smoke filled bar. Oh, tobacco smoke is the most noxious. I smoked grass and while that is rougher on the toke, the smoke in the room is not as irritating. I quit smoking cigarettes before quitting grass, but eventually quit that as well. (Brownies are the preferred route for grass).

So, the question, would I have a partner that smoked. NO! I had two that I endured their unhealthy vice and even with limiting the smoke to outside the house, the nasty smell comes in on clothing and hair. I really can't tolerate ambient smoke in any amount. It makes my reflex breathing shut down.

My first partner jim managed to kick smack cold turkey, yet could never stop smoking. Tells something of the adictiveness of the weed.

Smoking health problems have been proven, not only for the smoker but for the hapless people who have to breath the secondhand smoke. Which is why I discount all the selfish people who complain about the new "Clean Indoor Air Act" of 1991 restrictions on smoking. I was around before that time, gagging in the Airplanes and Greyhound busses (so you smoke in the rear of the vehicle - where does that recirculated air go?). I worked in a place where people smoked and had to endure that foul atmosphere for 8 hours a day (hence it became an OSHA issue where you are guaranteed a smoke free work environment)

Sorry if my health concerns are an inconvenience to your addiction, but there are priorities. Now, only 25 percent of the U.S. population engages in this proven unhealthy activity. (Which, unlike grass or hash, you never get off on the stuff - just feed your neuroses).

So, guess this puts me in the Anti-Tobacco-Smoke group. I can only hope that the remaining quarter of the people manage to kick this nasty, costly and unhealthy habit.

(First of all I would just like to mention to Shale that this short essay on the history of Anti-Smoking campaign was completely unnecessary and not to mention off topic because the real question is: "would you date a smoker", not what is your opinion on smoking.)

second: i just wanted to say that momentarily I'm dating a smoker, all of my friends are smokers, and it is great to be able to smoke when i feel the need to light one without anyone whining and complaining about it all the time.
Compromises can be made, but only for a very short period.
