37TH ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH (2008)

It's that time of year again for the old "WORLD-FAMOUS" ANN ARBOR HASH BASH!!! It's an "OLD RELIC", still surviving from the old, ORIGINAL "HIPPY" DAYS!!! The number of people that attend, is very much DEPENDENT on THE WEATHER!!! IF it's a NICE, SUNNY and WARM DAY, there may be many people attending, but if it's like LAST YEAR'S HASH BASH (which was COLD, with LIGHT SNOW and WINDY), then the "TURNOUT" will be much LIGHTER!!! At least DAVID ARQUETTE still made a GUEST appearance at LAST YEAR'S (2007) HASH BASH!!!

The older HASH BASHES were always held on APRIL 1ST ("APRIL FOOLS DAY"), but it was eventually changed to "THE FIRST SATURDAY in APRIL", as TOO MANY TEENAGERS "skipped" SCHOOL to ATTEND!!! The EARLY HASH BASHES had thousands of PEOPLE, with much WILD PARTYING, and it was like a MINI-"WOODSTOCK", but the RECENT HASH BASHES have been more "POLITICALLY ACTIVE". However, much SMOKING and PARTYING still goes on!!! AFTER the "MONROE STREET FAIR" (BLOCK PARTY) ENDS at 6:00 PM, LOCAL ANN ARBOR BARS "PARTY" well past MIDNIGHT, with SPECIAL "HASH BASH" BANDS!!!

Some HASH BASH years, there was a PLANNED REAL-LIFE "SMOKE-IN" (with SPEECHES) in FRONT of the ANN ARBOR FEDERAL BUILDING (located on: 2875 W. LIBERTY RD. - in the SOUTHWEST corner of LIBERTY ST. and FOURTH AVE.), from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM ("HIGH NOON"), but I think that they didn't have it LAST YEAR (2007)???

"At Woodstock in 1969, Hoffman interupted The Who's performance to attempt a protest speech against the jailing of John Sinclair of the White Panther Party. He grabbed a microphone and yelled, "I think that this is pile of shit! While John Sinclair rots in prison... " The Who's guitarist, Pete Townshend, unhappy with the interuption, cut Hoffman off mid-sentence, shouting , "Fuck off! Fuck off my fucking stage!" JOHN SINCLAIR used to ATTEND ALL of the ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASHES (since his "1969 marijuana arrest" was THE MAIN INSPIRATION for its CREATION), but a few years ago, he STOPPED ATTENDING, due to MINOR HEALTH issues (with his KNEES?), but MOSTLY due to MOVING to AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND, NETHERLANDS to attend "THE CANNABIS CUPS"!!! He does fly back to MICHIGAN, for a visit, on occasions, but it is mostly for his JAZZ and POETRY interests in FLINT, MI (his BIRTHPLACE)!!!

JOHN SINCLAIR is supposedly "THE GUEST SPEAKER" for this year's (2008) 37TH ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH!!!

I'll try to ATTEND the 37TH ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH, this YEAR (2008)!!! I know, there will be "the REGULARS" there!!! Are any other "hippy.com-ers" plan on attending??? IF SO, I may SEE you THERE!!!

Haha of course I'll at least walk through... The hash bash is great fun. I here that back in the day like you said there used to be thousands. I really wish it was bigger (more people.) oh well, I always do my part.

TODAY (SATURDAY, APRIL 5TH, 2008) is THE 37TH ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH, starting at "HIGH" NOON (12:00 PM) - 1:00 PM, located at the UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN (U of M) MAIN CAMPUS "DIAG" (east of STATE STREET) and north of SOUTH UNIVERSITY)!!!

After hearing "MARIJUANA ACTIVIST SPEECHES", with JOHN SINCLAIR being the MAIN GUEST SPEAKER (i.e. finally coming back, after a few years of being ABSENT form the ANN ARBOR HASH BASHES, of which was STARTED after his 1969 ARREST for POSSESSION of TWO MARIJUANA JOINTS), then it's "PARTY-DOWN" TIME at the "7TH ANNUAL MONROE STREET FAIR" (from 1:05 - 6:00 PM), with "live" LOCAL BANDS and "HIPPY-type" VENDORS (glass pipes, bongs, hemp products. t-shirts, CD's, and so forth)!!! After 6:00 PM, many LOCAL ANN ARBOR BARS, will continue the "HASH BASH PARTYING" with their specially-chosen LOCAL BANDS!!!

THIS YEAR (2008), the MICHIGAN WEATHER is "forecasted" to be far more acceptable than last year's ANN ARBOR HASH BASH, with a "MOSTLY SUNNY SKY and a high of 60 DEGRESS F."!!! Last year's (2007) ANN ARBOR HASH BASH was the COLDEST one that I can remember, with temperatures in the 20's and a "light dusting of snow" fell (but quickly melted), however very light SNOW FLURRIES occured during the MONROE STREET FAIR (at "ON and OFF" intervals)!!!

The MICHIGAN WEATHER greatly effects the OUTCOME of the ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASHES, so with the COLD DAY (last year in 2007), it created one of the LOWEST NUMBER OF ATTENDEES that I've ever witnessed in the many years of the ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASHES, with only about 1/3 of the U of M "DIAG" being filled up!!!! However, many "HASH BASHERS" may "skip" the "POLITICAL RALLY" part, and just attend the "MONROE STREET FAIR" part (with LIVE LOCAL BANDS, PARTYING WITH "THE HERB" and VENDORS) and/or the later ANN ARBOR BAR CELEBRATIONS, so it's hard to TRULEY ACCCESS "ATTENDENCE FIGURES"!!! "DAVID ARQUETTE" and his "THE TRIPPER MOVIE" TOUR BUS helped to, at leaast, create a WARMER, BRIGHT SPOT to the 2007 COLD ANN ARBOR HASH BASH!!!

The 2004 - 33RD ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH was warm enough for a decent HASH BASH "TURNOUT", with many "DRUMMING CIRCLES" and DANCING HIPPIES!!! This year's "forecasted" ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN WEATHER of: "MOSTLY SUNNY, with a high of 60 DEGREES F." may help to create a decent ATTENDENCE TURNOUT!!! Plus, "JOHN SINCLAIR" may actually show up this year!!! "DRUMMING CIRCLES" will be encouraged this year, so it may, hopefully, turn out to be a DECENT ANN ARBOR HASH BASH this year!!! Only time will tell!!!

"Jobbie Nooner is a wild island party, that is held on Lake St. Clair (near Detroit, Michigan) twice every summer. It was originated by a small group of automotive designers ("Jobbies") including Lee O'Dell who wanted to take co-worker, Lee Wagner, out for his birthday. They decided to blow out of work at lunchtime one Friday (i.e. "Pull a Nooner") get together on their boats and have a good time. It started 2 decades ago with four boats and seventeen friends. It has grown into the biggest party in the summer with an estimated 1000+ boats and nearly 5,000 people attending in recent years. It has been nicknamed the "Mardi Gras of the Midwest"."

IMAGINE "MARDI GRAS" combined with "WOODSTOCK 1969", and you'll have some idea what "JOBBIE NOONER" is all about!!! Much PARTYING, with ALCOHOL, HERB, LIVE BANDS, MARDI GRAS "beads" (for "HOOTERS FLASHING" by WOMAN), and other forms of NUDITY!!!

NO MINOR CHILDREN (under 18 years of age) are allowed at "Jobbie Nooner" (held on GULL ISLAND)!!!

"JOBBIE NOONER is FRIDAY, JUNE 27TH, THIS YEAR (2008)!!!"

"JOBBIE NOONER" is usually located on "GULL ISLAND" (in LAKE ST. CLAIR), so it is ACCESSED BY WATERCRAFT ONLY!!! I don't recommend SWIMMING to GULL ISLAND, as there will be 1000+ boats NAVIGATING all around, with some "CAPTAINS" possibly DRUNK (remember the "VALDEZ" OIL TANKER incident), or "HIGH ON THE HERB". There are also "SHIPPING CHANNELS", with HUGE "ORE FREIGHTERS"!!! GOOD LUCK on trying to "out swim" an ORE FREIGHTER!!! Guess who wouild win out??? RENT a WATERCRAFT (if you don't have one)!!!

"GILLIGAN" and "THE SKIPPER" may show up!!! GINGER, MARY ANN and even MRS. HOWELL will be competing for "HOOTER FLASHING", MIDWEST MARDI-GRAS beads!!! Just kdding, but "Jobbie Nooner" is a REAL EVENT!!!

The LOCAL DETROIT NEWS STATIONS and NEWSPAPERS usually make some mention of "JOBBIE NOONER" each year, plus LOCAL MICHIGANDERS like to discuss its WILD TALES!!! ALL TRUE, of course!!! The ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH is "MILD" compared to "JOBBIE NOONER"!!! Those "HARD-WORKING" AUTO WORKERS sure know how to PARTY!!!

Thank you for your hard work in posting these threads realted to HASH BASH and the Monroe Street Fair. I am one of the main organizers for the Monroe Street Fair and also the emcee. (This year I was the guy with the brown John Deere hoody on). I also do all the production for the Monroe Street Fair under Oak Hill Productions.
I wanted to drop a post here to let everyone know that I am in the process of creating a video and photo archive for the Monroe Street Fair website (oh yeah, I am also the web master for that). I think that it's "cool" that one of the "Main Organizers", the Producer, the Emcee and the WEBMASTER of "THE MONROE STREET FAIR" posted in "THE HIP FORUMS"!!! Any information that you can give us, or us to you, would be greatly appreciated!!! You could also post something about "THE MONROE STREET FAIR" and/of the "ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH" in the HIP FORM category of "hippies" (or any other APPLICABLE FORUM category).

At this year's (2008) "ANN ARBOR HASH BASH" and "MONROE STREET FAIR", I turned some hippies onto "hippy.com", as a "cool" place to learn of other "hippy" EVENTS and FESTIVALS, and just "hang out" here!!! MICHIGAN NORML could also post EVENTS, FESTIVALS, and other information on "hippy.com", if they chose to do so. Of course, I post information on "THE ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH" (known the world over - even in HOLLAND and RUSSIA - as one of the WORLD'S OLDEST REEFER "smoke-ins" and POLITICAL RALLIES) and "THE MONROE STREET FAIR", whenever possible.

Steve, I did notice you, in your BROWN, "JOHN DEERE" "hoody", at this year's (2008) "MONROE STREET FAIR", but then, I probably have seen you at all of the past 6 "MONROE STREET FAIR's" as well (since I have attended all 7 years worth of "THE MONROE STREET FAIR", but NOT all years of the "ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH"), of which I mostly attended ALL YEARS from 1998, and on)!!! Maybe at next year's (2009) "MONROE STREET FAIR" , I'll be able to DIRECTLY communicate with you, more.

In 2009, there is also the "40TH ANNIVERSARY" of "WOODSTOCK" (1969)!!! Plan something NICE for next year, as a "SPECIAL TRIBUTE" to "WOODSTOCK", at next year's "MONROE STREET FAIR"!!! Maybe add some cool "TIE-DYED" cloth "BACKDROPS" to the BAND STAGE (that could be quickly added and removed)!!! Some RETRO "psychdelic lighting" would also be way cool!!! Fog machines??? Just a thought!!! Also, add a VENDOR, who sells HEMP NECKLACES (as I need a NEW one)!!!

The "ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH" for next year (2009) should be planned better, than it was this year (2008), i.e. WITHOUT CONTROVERSY!!! Plan it with the "40TH ANNIVERSARY" of "WOODSTOCK" in mind!!! However, the ART group "FOKUS" was cool in helping to "SAVE" this year's (2008) "ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH"!!! Many thanks to "FOKUS"!!! They can "party" with us, anytime!!! JOHN SINCLAIR'S "guest" appearance this year, was a BRIGHT SPOT!!!

The University of Michigan (U of M) shouldn't complain too much about "HASH BASH" and the "MONROE STREET FAIR", when you compare them to last weekend's "CEDAR FEST" in EAST LANSING, MI (i.e. MIchigan State University (MSU)) students. This year (2008), at "HASH BASH" and the "MONROE STREET FAIR", there were ZERO MARIJUANA ARRESTS and ONLY ONE ARREST for "DISORDERLY CONDUCT" (i.e. pretty PEACEFULL and NON-VIOLENT events). At "CEDAR FEST" (MSU CAMPUS in EAST LANSING, MI) there were RIOTS, fires, "object throwing" and so far, a TOTAL OF 55 ARRESTS (with more ARRESTS possibly coming)!!!

MICHIGAN VOTERS: Remember to vote in NOVEMBER 2008 (this year) on the "LEGALIZE MEDICAL MARIJUANA" PROPOSAL (for the STATE of MICHIGAN), of which there was a BALLOT circulating around at this year's (2008) "ANN ARBOR HASH BASH" and "MONROE STREET FAIR". I'm sure MICHIGAN NORML - "MINORML" (National Organization for the Reformation of Marijuana Laws) helped out, from their two VENDOR tents!!!

cosmic.. that's awesome that we saw each other there without even realizing it. yeah in my hookah I was smoking apple-grape hookah tobacco with, well, another potent substance mixed in... not actual hash though, just mixed in some green with the hookah. my hookah definitely got a lot of use that day, I'd have to guess that 150+ people got to use it.

and before hash bash I read up on john sinclair, but I didnt realize at first who he was when he was giving the speech. the guy definitely has a very distinctive voice, and his poetry and music that day were amazing.

And Monroe... I definitely remember seeing you on the stage at the beginning wearing your john deer hoodie. i think i may have gotten a photo of you, but i'm not sure.

It was nice smoking with all of you this year, and hope to see you there next year. In the mean time, here's a message I sent to a smoking buddy of mine who was unable to attend, describing what hash bash meant. enjoy.

"My boy, my apologies if my reply is not up to philosophical par, as I am, well, tripping on mushrooms at the moment, in addition to recovering from the Ann Arbor Hash Bash, there I probably smoked a half ounce, in addition to toking with 150+ stoners, old-school-hippies, neo-hippies, punks, preps, jocks, goths, mods, scene kids, giants, midgets, singers, dancers, jokers, philosophers, all tokers, smoking together in unison such that if one stepped a few hundred feet back, one would see a giant cloud of cannabis smoke, gently percolating with a gentle breeze, and several times per second, puffs of smoke adding to the serene cloud. Scores of bodies gathering together on Monroe Street, in defiance, lighting up the sacred herb which our politicians try to make a forbidden fruit. Many instruments of combustion were present there, from the most ghetto of improvised pieces to the most ornate bowls, bongs, steamrollers and one-hitters alike, along with skinny and fat blunts, joints, and suspicious "cigarettes", many of which upon inquisition were found to be spliffs. Strangely enough, I was the only one there with a hookah, though I had plenty enough to go around, gently burning an apple-grape hookah blend, and, well, the other potent substance I mixed in. Music by jam and jazz bands alike, speeches by the pro-legalization types, and a moving rally given by John Sinclair. It was definitely a day to remember, if only we could remember it amongst the smoke of many pounds of grass that were consumed that day. Too bad, that I cannot recall more of that afternoon, because no mixture of words, sounds, or photographs can even begin to scratch the surface of what is was to actually be there in that vertex of space and time."
