I did it first time today yay! Followed a tramps lead outside Boots, got some baby carrots , fully packaged, the skip was practically overflowing with stuff, all sell-by today. Ridiculous, didn't wanna take too much, tramp deserved the food more than me.
You guys are so heady! I dont at all get nervous about authorities around my neck of the woods. especially when were talking about garbage picking. going diving tomorrow, I'll let ya know what I get.
oh, good, you had a similar mental picture to mine! Could you imagine the convo? "Sweetie, before we get married, i have to tell you about an indiscretion....."
Be careful dumpster diving at a grocery store. The one i worked at would frequently pour bleach on the items they put in. Often the produce sits in the back room until trash out. A MUCH better bet- would be to ASK the produce person if you can have damaged/bruised less ripe produce. They will usually give it to you free. I used to bring home SOO much free produce when I worked in a grocery store.
care to tell us the name, if it was a chain. I'd heard of (and encountered) restaurants that did that (Long John Silvers: spread that word- and I liked the hush puppies), but not groceries. I run into locked enclosures (which locally are a zoning requirement, so blame the local gov't, not the individual store) here because of wildlife foraging (as in bears). Some are open at the top, but I prefer easier picking.
I worked for Winn-Dixie..but I worked at two separate locations and it wasn't a standard requirement(AFIK),more of at the managers discretion when/if they would douse the trash. Usually, it was to prevent people from stealing product packaging that was damaged and trying to return it to customer service for the money(which happened quite frequently at one store)- or for bugs. ..not specifically for produce seeking dumpster divers.
Wow that's so extreme! Have you ever seen the affect that chlorine bleach induces on organic matter, like the tender skin of a tomatoe. It's definetly apparent. I will definetly keep my eye out. A friend of mine, told me that if you go to a supermarket and claim you're a pig farmer and you would 'take off your hands' damaged produce.you can normally score some good stuff. I may try it soon. I have also noticed alot of large-scale grocery stores have waste in a garbage compactor, that i would never want to even go near.
even if you don't score food, dumpster diving pulls a lot of stuff out of the landfill and back into use. one of the local scavenger guys is cleaning up on metal scrap. He's got a route and a few connections, a bike and trailer, works three (long) days a week and comes close to my full time salary.
My roommates are notorious for throwing out foods. I've salvaged quite a few items from our garbage. My old roommate would throw out things even if there was a slight bruise or if a veggie was more than 4 days old.
GOOD FOR YOU!!!! I think its absolutley amazing what we are wasting. im 17 yrs old and I cant waste it drives me insane! I was thinking baout doing that. But I wouldnt know where to go I live in a small town with prerrt much nothing around me... but pesky suburban houses.
