Patriotism is a matter of the heart, we should fel pasionate enough for our country to feel patriotic. http://www.ukwebco.com/
Come on just go consult Mr. Websters little book. Patriotism is loyalty to ones country at all time, and to the government only when it deserves it. Mark Twain
A country is the people... You cant love only your people, your country... its kind of selfish... Be patriotic is good if your country is the whole world! Because if you love your people more than the others, you may accept injustice for them if its good for your people. You must wish the best not only for your country but for all the people with their different cultur!
I believe patriotism is bad- it separates people into "us" vs. "them." Why can't we see that we are all the same, no matter what country you happened to be born in. I have heard that one reason no government would admit to the existence of UFOs from another planet b/c people would no longer see themselves as "Americans" or "Chinese" but rather citizens of planet Earth. In other words, governments would start to lose their power and Christian fundamentalists like Pat Robertson would be "up the creek w/o a religious paddle." As someone said, countries would not be allowed to enter the Intergalactic Union, just like cities can't enter the UN. I found this idea to be really interesting to consider.
I consider myself a Nationalist. Nothing like the far right winged Nationalists mind you, but a Nationalist never the less and see nothing wrong with it.
Patriotism in terms of adhering to what once made America great is good, because to me what has made this country valid is that it was so much about individuality. Not always in practice of course but certainly in theory, and possibly morseo in reality than any place on earth. That has been changing in the name of xenophibia and false patriotism. To be a truly patriotic American is, to me, to support and defend and restore that original ideal of individuality.
Flag waving "pseudo-patriots" are just a bunch of assholes, in my book. Would you kill and die for a piece of cloth? How about killing and dying for your pair of Levi's jeans? In this age of globalization where everything, everyone is interconnected, this whole idea of "God, flag and country" is pretty lame and stupid. It's just guaranteed to create more wars and strife. And wars, by the way, do not solve anything, wars and violence only beget more wars and violence. Just look at the mess that these nincompoop right-wing, Neo-Con Republicans have gotten us into.
We the people, for the people,by the people.Thats patriotism. Its that simple, you stand up for the people, not the government. If you dont see this, your as stupid as a box of rocks, and dont deserve to be here enjoying the freedoms. Dont blame the people for the governments bullshit. Assholes, lame and stupid,Stev90 I believe is you,not knowing what true patriotic values are. Stev90,maybe you should take your book and move to Iran if you hate Americans so bad, maybe you'll fit right in,then again maybe not. I even support your right to say what you did.Thats patriotic. You sound like a fascist, and most likely dont even know it. And for the rest of the warm and fuzzy stuff, the world does not live with the same morals as the citizens of the U.S. so there will always be an US,and THEM. And that doesn't mean you cant support those people around the world in thier efforts, while being patriotic to them, and your own people. Just remember you enjoy the good things in this country because of a shit load of patriotic people who fought and died for your right to enjoy them. Show them some respect,PLEASE. IMHO Peace BULL
A lot of you are confusing patriotism with nationalism.. maybe we should just stick to talking about how much Bush sucks... that takes no political understanding... It sounds like a plan to me.
For me patriotism always seemed like trying to take responsibility for other people's achievements. There is plenty in my country I love, and plenty that drives me up the wall. I think "patriotism" is one of those hazily defined words, and you soon find that the country patriots are patriotic about seems to have suspiciously smaller borders than the country they actually live in.
Patriotism i.e. Nationalism creates absurd thinking and feelings to preserve the past. Everything is romanticized and countries are glorified for their achievements. Also, it divides nations and cultures further by creating a feeling of xenophobia of us and them. Why one would be proud of where they come from is beyond my understanding. Why be proud of something you did not do? I vote for bad.
According to Thomas Jefferson " Dessent is the highest form of Patriotism" Everything in moderation works out best....
I dont believe in patriotism in a sense. The world is one whole, i dont see where these men think they can section a part of it off and call it a country. We are all born in the world so im a patriot for the freedom of the world if you wanna call it that. I'll never stand up for england because this country has too much badness in it, its corrupt. I would however stand up for perhaps a different country in need.
i have never understood patriotism so i guess i would vote bad as its effects are so often devastating
patriotism is treason against the human species and every other living thing. 'nuff said. =^^= .../\...
