Umm yeah it's rude. Just because you think something sucks makes it so? WTF man, get over yourself. Everyone has different tastes, you should know this by now.

Yes, I know. Some people have good taste in music and some people like formulaic, commercialized crap.

I can't stand it when someone thinks that the answer to everything is 'everyone has different tastes'. Yes, and some people like porno and some people like literature-- but which one is more worthwhile?

    Ditto....

    but to each their own.....

you ever notice that people who listen to really shitty music are the ones blasting it out of their cars?? Now that's crossing the line....listen to your shit all you want, but please, for the love of all things holy, do not force me to listen to it!!!!!

I would. There's a lot of music I don't like, but it's a bit pointless to tell someone their music sucks, since music is subjective.

This is the same attitude currently ruining the hearts and minds of too many people to count.

I think people need to understand that everyone's music preference is different.
Its not the best way to say "your music taste sucks!" but you could say like "its not my type of music." or something.

why would you compare porn and literature?? This has nothing to do with people's different preferences.

I tell people that their music sucks all the time.

There is a huge aspect of quality in music, which goes beyond preference into a realm where "good" and "bad" can actually exist.

Do I make a point out of telling people their music taste sucks? Nah... but I sure will make a whole lot of fun out of a friend who went to a Nickleback show...

Hell, I'd probably stop talking to them.

It depends on the case on how it's said. Musicians should expect criticism since not everyone will like it. But blantant slander is uncalled for under any case. People who simply say it to be cool is also uncalled for. That's when it's personal and not simply the 'it's not my thing' case.

rudeness is plain fuckin' uncalled for

as long as they are passionate about it and genuine about their love for that type of music, let 'em love shit.

Everybody is different and connect with different things in different ways, it's just how they perceive the world. You can't be mean to people just because they're different than you.

If you ask just about anyone, they'll probably tell you they have great musical taste. Obviously, there is some disagreement about what "great musical taste" means.

Rather than making a competition out of cultural literacy (theirs AND yours), why not turn them on to the good stuff?

Depends on how you told them. A lot of people judge other's based on what their music tastes are. For example, they seem to assume that a Brittany Spears fan must be a stupid slutty teenager try-hard.

That sort of stuff isnt cool. You cant define a person's personality by what they listen to.

But if you told them that you dont like Brittany Spears because she's a manufactured pop icon, created by record companys to sell music and her music has no real feeling behind it, then that's probably ok. You're critiquing the music: Not the person.

But, in my view, I dont see any point in slagging off someone else's musical taste anyway. Id rather say something like: "Hey, if you think Pink is cool, then you should have a listen to Gossip. You might really like them."

Music is meant to be enjoyed, so it makes sense to help people enjoy new music, rather than hate their old music.

    Well, the OP did say..
... so I say he said that their music sucks and started critiquing it. I used to do that and then realized that people didn't like when I did it so I stopped. Don't do it, it's rude.
