But HHB do you really need bandaids, wont duct tape work just as good. I thought i remember reading that backpackers will use that instead of bandaids.

nope bandaids arent a real necessity. But at the same time bandaids are sterile and with MRSA and other infectious diseases more common nowadays, hygiene when it comes to first aid is vital...

well couldnt you make your own sterile bandages by putting the cloth in boiling water or would that not kill everything?

Would wind power be viable in the interior during the winter? I've heard that in some places solar and wind power have a symbiotic relationship.

We really don't get enough wind to make much of a difference. When it's dark and cold, when we could use the wind power the most, it's typically dead calm. Some friends of mine homesteading in the Brooks Range have better success, but they still say it's a wash. I spent a couple of years on Unalaska Island in the Aleutians. There was so much wind there that the only problem was finding a wind generator heavy duty enough to handle it.

Dilligaf, yeah that's a good site. Lots of useful information to be had. The folks there do tend to be more conservative so I do fine staying out of their political threads.

i think the ability to be mobile is important.however if one is in a rural setting already, i disagree on mobility being the best option..

anyone with any knowledge knows that a secure position to hold up will be much safer than being mobile..

when your mobile your in the open and asking for trouble..

just think of the military in iraq.. safest place is on a base, least safest place in a convoy..

thats not to say that one shouldnt have a "bug out" plan no matter where they live, however even with a "bug out" plan one should have food supplies in at least 2 other locations besides where they bugged out from..

Carbon dioxide released from evaporating dry ice will kill all animal life in the container.

    ^Yaeh. the Kalalau Outlaws!!
    Kauai is awsome!!:)

People have thought that Armageddon the end of the world social break down has been coming forever and then another decade goes by.
I have a lot of friends and family that are Mormon they always keep 4 years supply. They keep a lot of flour and a lot of preserves. The preserves seen really important to them I think a lot of it is because in the old days scurvy was so prevalent in people living off of supplies like that.
I think one thing people should consider is if the whole social order really broke down the military and police all have back up plans so you would have a lot of wandering gangs of military and police.
And if those back up plains fail then you will have gangs run by renegade ex military generals and numerous gangs run by ex police forces.

The reason I believe this is because I have been to countries where the social order has broken down and talked to the people about it. And if you read history of unstable countries it happens every time.
But hiding places might be a important consideration, all the people I talked to that went thought government destruction said that roving bands of military thugs would make a living off of going door to door and taking what they want.
In the united states we have a very extensive police military structure and if it gets broken and salvage back together it is still going to be huge.. So a dozen guys in a shelter with AK 47s is not going to hold up to the random military gangs that come out of something like that.
I don’t think social destruction is near it could be but I doubt it. But I think the only way to survive something like that is to go to a very remote place and live like a guerrilla or pay protection to whatever military gangs develop out of it.

Have you thought of the big four. wheat(flour), Evaporated milk, Honey(sugar), Salt. They say its a bland diet but can keep you alive for months.

I know that since you have goats you probably don't need the milk. Honey will last forever and like oldwolf said they found seeds and grains after thousands of years that will still sprout and you can eat them, they have also found pots with honey in them still good. Salt is essential. I know I would rather have a large stockpile of salt than try to hoof it to the ocean or nearest salt mine to get it, esp when SHTF...

This is also assuming that you have a water supply.

In the city I personally always have a full pantry that I rotate the old stock to the front and replace from the back so that all the canned stuff gets renewed. I keep a large bag of flour unopened and one for cooking, a bag of powdered milk, I always have a big pail of honey or two and a box of salt or two. the nice thing about the powdered milk is that it won't go bad and even if the power goes out for weeks(winter or summer) I can still have milk. I have some smoked/jerkeyed meats not much though. I also keep a few gallons of water in the basement in case the water runs out and the HWT is empty for some reason. Like you said a whole bunch of seeds can go a long way two, I try to keep a two years worth supply at hand and try and add to the stock when I can.

If I had to I would also stock a large amount of common ammo and a few guns as well as crossbows and bows and traps and wire. Ammo will be worth more than gold if SHTF and used for trading as well as getting food/protection. crossbows and bows can be almost as good as a gun but it's easier to make your own ammo for those. and traps and wire(snares as well as many other uses) for catching food when you're sleeping.

Oh and most important of all book (resource books, how to books and reference material).
