Thanks for the baking soda recommendation! I've been having the baking soda at the bottom of the bowl problem too. I'm gonna try that Bob's brand next time I buy some. Unfortunately my mom just bought a HUGE bulk size bag of the Arm and Hammer baking soda from costco, so it may be a while. I also found that if you get the water steaming hot before you mix it with the other stuff, the baking soda disolves easier. But I always feel bad wasting so much water while waiting so long for the water to heat up that much, especially in this crazy drought we're in here.
if you feel badly for wasting the water, do like i do and when you have finished doing yer dreadies, take all the used concoction and tip it down the loo, leave overnight and then flush. it gets rid of all the limescale and leaves everything sparkly clean without poisoning our planet ;D
Sweet, I will try this today, especially after reading about SLS in my shampoo and feeling wax inside as I was trying to split a dread. Hopefully Wild Oats has tee tree oil.
Haha it cleans toilets! I also have used it as a shoe cleaner!! Soak some stinky shoes in your bowl of concoction rinse, dry, and they smell brand new
I went out and bought the tree oil yesterday, 1oz was $9 for 100% Pure Australian by Desert Essence. I also found Bob's Red Mill but baking powder, not soda.... same thing? or should I look for same brand soda which I couldn't find. Also, anyone tried table salt??
wow, with all this outpouring of love for mama's concoction, i'm almost as excited to try it as i am about getting dreadlocks!
ok so daily it seems we get candle headed wax tragedies showing up trying to figure out what to do to get rid of the sticky mess generaly most have shown up a few days after theyre wax mistakjes so we'll start with those absolutely the best methid, hot hot water scrub comb out all wax return hair to normal use any shampoo made for removing buildup and residue start over backcombing otr natural ofcourse after hours of backcombing you may decide to not start over entirely in this case your looking at hours of very hot water, and soap scrubbing agressively and with fingernails picking and scraping at wax lumps in the event that you were very sparing and only used an extremely small amount your in luck and just a few hours scrubbing should do the trick but if you used alot you may have to repeat the process many times over weeks (this is why starting over is generaly preffered) if you used it over time and have a buildup and your dreads are more matured so starting over isnt a attractive option try again scrubbing with very hot water altrernating soaop and the deep cleanse (baking soda lemon juice sea salt and tea tree oil (ive suggested adding pure esential orange oil too since that shgould dissolve the wax but noones experimented with this yet that i know of) i know there have been other wax removal suggestions and threads but figured we need a sticky add your own suggestions and stories and if anyone can find the other wax removal threasds perhaps we can merge them?
Dawn (the dish soap) works wonders on grease and oil...I wonder if it'd help with wax? I don't use Dawn and I've never used wax, so I can't speak from experience. I guess someone who wants to remove the wax would try anything, really, so it's worth a mention...
just read that you need to be very careful removing wax the water temp must be 140 f or higher thats hot enough to blister your scalp so get help make sure the hot hot water doesnt burn your skin
Wax removes itself over time. Over the period of about 6 washes of your hair. Assuming you didn't use too much of it.
maybe it seems like it....but no, it really doesnt wash out that quickly. ive known waxy heads and the wax tends to show up later. but, thats just in my experience, right? guys, please try to keep the arguing to a MINIMUM! this forum doesnt need fights.
how does wax remove itself over 6 washes? when ya wax a car you wax it to repell water right? its not water solulable shampoos dont break it down the only way to remove it is to luioquify it enough that it will come out heat liquisfies wax at 140 degrees wax cools rather quickly too light a candle pour the wax over your hand and it cools quick enough to not burn you but dip a finger in the still hot liquid wax for more then a few seconds and u get burned the key to wax removal is hot enough water and intence scrubbing to keep it liquid and get it scrubbed out its not at all easy its why u should never put any in wax is made to not come out mix up shampoo and water and drop a ball of wax in it..leave it sit there for weeks if u want if it doesnt soften and disolve into the mixture..the mixture will never get it oiut then heat it to near bioling..you'll see just how hot it has to be when the ball becomnes a scum floating oin the top..but melted
Hello! I am new here, and new to dread-world! I just got my dreads started 4 weeks ago, following the Dreadheadhq-instructions..with wax! Yikes! Fortunately, since I know that my hair always gets greasy with wax, I didn't put much in. Some of them where okay, some just turned into greasy somethings... So today I really gave them a good scrub, as it has been so annoying having greasy "not-dreads". What worked for me was really hot water, a non-residue shampoo that I added some drops of essential orange oil and juniper oil to, and alternating washing with plenty of that shampoo and rinsing with vinegar+water. So now, for the first time in 4 weeks, my dreads are looking and feeling non-greasy! Thanks to soaring eagle for giving me the idea of using essential orange oil!
ahhh glad ya experimented it made sence i was just afraid it would be too strong and dissilve hair too
I only put like 10 drops in about 15 ml shampoo. Along with a few drops juniper-oil. I didn't use all of the shampoo though. Now my hair feels so clean! The shampoo-scrup has tightened up my dreads even better than before. A lot of shrinking and loops. It is looking wild!! The ends have been dreading, as the wax had been washed out, but closer to the roots it is just normal straight hair. Funny! I was afraid the cocotion would dry out my hair and scalp (as dhhq-shampoo did) but nooo, it is so nice to touch now! Feels like felted wool
