so i took my dog for a walk because its getting awesome in minnesota... sunny and in the 40s... LOVE IT... so i was takin him for a walk in our normal spot which is along the river dike.. so he decided to run down the dike and onto the ice on the mississippi river... and he went in.. he fought for about 5 min and i noticed he wasnt getting out so i called 911... thank god the fire dept was only 2 blocks away.. because it took them a bit for being two blocks.. i think they got there just in time because he was barely staying up... i was an absolute mess... i dunno how i would have ever dealt with having to watch my dog drownd... but thanks to the fire dept hes still alive and kickin... slowly recuperating right now...

near frozen/ icy water its best to keep him on a leash. I'm glad everything is okay, but definitely call emergency services if it happens again. They have car insurance for dogs now, so they are almost considered human.

what a lucky escape for the both of you as a dog owner, i empathise with you

i hope you can relax now a few months ago, my dog was attacked so badly
the other dog had to be put down(not my choice, it was the RSPSA) so hugs for the pair of you:)

yes, fire and emergency services do that stuff as part of their job they would be happy to know their rescue had a good outcome

being completely serious here i would send the fire dept. or whoever a thank you letter...maybe even one of those cheese and cracker gift baskets or something in a little while....

i dont know what i'd do in that situation. thats scary as hell :(

that's a terrific idea, if you cannot afford a gift, a card would be enough i gave the vet and his staff morning tea as a thankyou. They worked really hard to save my dog and also gave me a huge $$$ discount

edit to say, if you still have a case of the guilts, let it go. Accidents happen
put it down to experience and give your mate a cuddle

make sure you keep an eye on him!!!!!that cold water can cause him some problems.one night my EXs daughter let my dog out and never told anybody.it was freezing outside that night.my poor dog was outside all night.i didnt think anything was wrong when she wasnt in the bed with us.i figured she was out on the couch.the nieghbor brought her home in the morning when she found her.after she warmed up for a bit she couldnt move at all.had to rush her to the animal hospital.they said she arthritis bad and it was why she couldnt move.shes fine now but i don t leave her out long in the cold anymore

its alrite should be enjoyed to the most, there are negatives but i think there either here for us to work through and learn from or they are results of our ignorance in the first place so basically just have fun, think positive and work through your problems. im optimistic i guess.

lol. that was a close call, a life jacket for a dog. i don't think it woulda helped him in this situation though. he woulda been a frozen/floatin dog. :D the mississippi river? musta been a strong current. also what kinda dog u got, how big. :D

he's an olde english bulldogge/lab mix.. yea i dont really see how the life jacket would have helped... seeing as he wasnt gonna get out anywhere.. there was at least 5ft of ice from off the shore... nesta i'm totally sending a card when i get around to it... the FD is right across the street from me lol... i can throw a rock and hit it... he was quite the fighter.. when they got him out .. he walked back to the house... he didnt wanna get in the fire truck... it was ok though cuz we were only 3 blocks from my house.. he seems to be doin alright as of this mornin... ate his food last night and every thing...
